I found this out quite by accident. I started making some lotions with rice bran oil rather than apricot kernel oil when all I had left in my house was cooking oil. What I discovered is that rice bran oil has a strong skin tightening effect, to the point where I could not use this lotion on my face because the skin felt too tight. It does however make a great body lotion where skin firming is desirable. Might be useful for post pregnancy tummy.
Rice Bran Oil (cold pressed and unrefined) is high in vitamin E and Gamma Oryzganol (a Ferulic acid and Vitamin E compound) and is easily absorbed into the skin. It's not however very emollient and if you need greater emolliency you'll need to blend with a heavier oil to achieve it. It is however very cheap even cold pressed and unrefined which makes it ideal for making large quantities of body lotion.
The only negative effect I've discovered is that for some reason Rice Bran Oil tends to make my pigmentation more noticable. I have no idea why, but because of this I cannot use it on my face. But I do use it as a body lotion quite successfully.
Most rice bran oil is produced in Thailand and owing to it's shelf stability, much of it is not hydrogenated and therefore trans-fatty acid free. It's a relatively untouched natural oil even when bought off the supermarket shelf from the cooking aisle. Here's my basic recipe for a nice body lotion. This is more a cream consistency.
100mls rice bran oil
30mls avocado oil (can substitute any highly emollient oil here, also try flax seed or olive oil)
200mls of distilled water or floral water
2 heaped spoonfuls of grated beeswax
1 full teaspoon of e-wax
Melt wax and oils together in double boiler until fully combined. Add the water then whizz with a stick blender until cooled and thickened. Initially this will be thin like water until it gets to room temperature then it will rapidly thicken up. You need to use a stick blender to ensure it properly emulsifies as it cools otherwise it will split. Makes a cream much like cold cream. If you want a lighter consistency substitute stearic acid for the beeswax. Makes approx 300mls of body cream. |
