avalange, which brand of probiotic multi-vitamin do you take?
would appreciate it if you girls post the brand of supplement as well. i've always wanted to take supplements but worry about the filler contents and quality issues. |

I've only JUST started taking any vitamins. My main focus right now is (hopefully) nerve repair. I had a wisdom tooth extraction on January 31 and my surgeon damaged a nerve that left the left side of my lower lip, teeth, gum and chin completely numb. This could be permanent or temporary. The numbness I could live with. It's the little jolts of electricity that randomly run through the nerve and the waking up to find I've nearly chewed through my lip in my sleep that has seriously put me in a -. Blah. So...with all that said, I'm taking:
Lecithin-400mg 3 times daily
B-12 2500 mcg twice daily
Folic Acid 400 mcg once daily
Vitamin C 500 mg twice daily
Vitamin E 400 IU twice daily
Any other suggestions? I bought some MSM but my bottle doesn't have either of those "seals" on it so I'm going to get a different kind. |

A good thread. This is my list, always forgot to eat. Try to eat 4-5 times a week.
Vitamin A
vitamin B complex
Vitamin C
VC Ester
Vitamin E
Calcium and Magnasium
Selenium
Zinc
Chromium
Acetyl L-Carnitine
Alpha Lipoic Acid
Co Q10
Omega 3-6
Pycnogenol
Zinc
I always try to find a capsule type or softgel because it is hard for me to swallow tablet type, especially calcium and magnasium which are bigger than the other tablets.
Re: Pycnogenol, one of my friends recommended long ago I cannot remember the reason....what it is so expensive? |

None.
Should I be concerned? I eat fruit and vegetables every day as well as dairy, protein, etc... also very few processed foods and I drink no colas of any kind. |

I take a multi-vitamin, calcium, B-complex, and a couple of others, possibly E and fish oil. It sounds odd that I'm not sure what I'm taking, but we have one of those pill containers that holds 28 days. My DH fills 2 weeks for him and 2 weeks for me. I told him that he could poison me as I just take whatever's in the container for that day. |

Interesting. Curious how many of us make the decisions on what to take. Research seems to change so much in this area. Reccomendations from one year turn out to have potential health problems. Do we really know what's safe/benefical?? Are we just spending money, helping the supplement industry?? I take them, and I hope they're useful, but I wonder.... I guess it's like anything else, do research, don't believe everything you read from the industry selling the product.
Nevertheless I take following vitamins/supplements:
Solgar Calcium citrate/D
Garlicin garlic
Glucos/Chondroit
Tumeric
Nordic Fish oil/borage oil
Longevenix resveratrol
Sam-e
Occasional Solgar multi
Thinking about: (after reading thread and wanting to believe!)
MSM
Coq10
Biotin

Anna, I would think if you live in a country that doesn't allow the poisoning of the food or water nor the utter depletion of the soil, you should be able to get much of your needed nutrients from food alone and that is my preference any day. Unfortunately I live in Canada, and there are few protections in place for those things if they compromise the bottom line of any given corporation. |

I am thinking I should start taking some. But I wonder if they really help much. What do you think? Thanks. |

I'm not sure about the food (though I would doubt it as much of the food here is organic) but most fruits and vegetables here are imported because they don't grow well here.
With regards to water, it is very drinkable straight from the tap. It tastes better than bottled water in my opinion. They don't add many chemicals to water here. |

I don't take any. I try to eat a balanced meal and drink plenty of water and hope that's enough. My diet includes fresh fish (incl. oily fish),chicken, egg, set live yoghurt, fresh fruits, lentils, fresh veg, chappati (unleavened indian bread) & rice. Though I do eat take-aways, but it's been ages since I have had super-market readymade food. I do not have fizzy drinks but like my glass of red wine with my dinner.
I have recently watched on tv that fresh spinach is very good for the eyes. Will try and munch a few fresh baby spinach leaves regularly. Have also read that tomotoes is very good, so, will try to have regular intake (be it in juice form or puree). |

I didn't mean it's unfortunate to live here, I meant we have few protections in place on very important issues... including chemicals in the water, instead of ozonation, the proliferation of fish farms, subsequent poisoning of the oceans/fish, mandatory pasteurization, instead of a choice between that and raw, soil that is practically void of minerals used to grow crops and unregulated advertising of crap foods to kids just a couple of my pet peeves.
Supplementation is not ideal, but I believe it's the only bandaid we have.
It's a tad off topic but I needed to clarify I love Canada, just not some of the things that go on and then we wonder why degenerative diseases are epidemic. |

That sounds healthy. They say blueberries are good for eyes too. |

Would you recommend any particular brands for vitamins? I went on vitacost and they have a lot of stuff by NSI - is it good quality? Any other recommendations? Or maybe brands I should avoid? Thank you! |

I don't see any problem with taking different vitamins. It's much healthier for you than prescription drugs, and is more effective at treating and preventing the condition(s) for which we take them.
Currently, I take a whole food multivitamin that has been the best multi I have ever taken. I also take vitamin D, vitamin B12, probiotic supplement, flaxseed oil and magnesium (which is often overlooked, but very important). I would like to start taking vitamin E, and also Sam-e in the winter months. I am a firm believer in taking vitamins. =) |

I always have low iron so I'm taking MegaFoods Blood Builder now. I normally hate taking iron pills b/c they make me constipated and upset my stomach - this is the first brand that I've taken consistently and I'm almost finished a bottle of 60 pills.
I also tried floradix, but I was too lazy to take a liquid iron supplement consistently.
I'm looking forward to getting my blood tested to see if my iron levels have improved - when I got them tested last year, I was one point above anemic...
I also take a wholefoods zinc supplement in the morning - New Chapter zinc food complex, and also 1000 IU Vit D every morning. |
