Has anyone tried a treadmill desk?

I work from my home office and have a treadmill that I do not use regularly. However, I have read quite a bit of research that walking slowly (less than 1 mph) while working all day can have great health benefits.

Have not heard of that one! I think my legs would kill me at the end of every day though! LOL.

One of my team members is using one and said that she shockingly feels more energetic now. But I think it is something I would have to work up to.

FYI that the sweet spot is only about .7mph in order to be able to type.

I have seen them only in pictures; not in actual use.

For those who don't have a treadmill desk; maybe stand or pace at your desk. All those extra steps do add up.

I have also seen (in magazines only. Again not IRL) people who use a Swiss ball as a chair at a desk. I imagine you could develop quite the abs.

Can always modify a current treadmill. Seems like it wouldn't be that difficult if you're a DIYer. Just depends on what type of treadmill you have (if you currently have one).

Longer DVI/HDMI cable.
USB extensions for keyboard/mouse.
Square wood frame attached to handles (w/ C clamps) w/ desk keyboard+mouse pad (1 piece).
Monitor clamp mount (attached to a wood support on the back end of the treadmill (would depend on treadmill style)).
Better insoles.

Bad Grin

Then just get a treadmill from craigslist. A lot of them are just gathering dust in peoples houses/garages.

I actually just put a leaf from my DR table over the treadmill handles tonight...it looked pretty good, but I haven't moved my laptop in there and tried it yet.

We have several in my office building. Sadly, no one is ever on them. I would love to give it a try but my workday consists of back to back meetings.

Same here, but since I work from home I just have to dial in. I don't miss being trapped in conference rooms all day...after 9 years of working remotely, I am not sure I could ever go back to an office!

I want one! If companies gave their employees the option to have one, it would pay back their investment fourfold in saved health insurance costs.

I like it in theory, but I know that realistically I wouldn't use it, even if my company offered them. I can't even "train" myself to elevate my desk for me to stand up for more than a couple hours a week.

Bethany, do post on your take on it once you start trying it out Smile

Well, I went for it and purchased a height adjustable desk which I will place over my treadmill.

http://heightadjustableworktable.com/

I'll post a pic when it is all together, and weigh in on my thoughts. Basically, I am making myself do this for health reasons, though I may not like it, sigh.

Btw, here is another recent article on the benefits of slow walking (vs more intense exercise) and standing vs sitting.

Woot! The adjustable desk arrived, it is now assembled, and I just need to move the treadmill underneath it. Pics forthcoming this weekend.
