Hello,

Can someone please help me figure out what is going on with my skin?

Several years ago in my early 20s, I did a poorly administered at-home chemical peel on myself. It looks like most of the damage from this is only just beginning to show up now (8-9 years later!). I know that what I'm seeing is due to the peel, as the damage looks consistent to the poor peeling results. I have indents, shallow hyperpigmented depressions of various shapes, straight lines/slashes and demarcations throughout my face, scarred enlarged pores, and overall, blotchy and uneven textures.

I know they say sun damage can take up to 20 years to appear – could the same thing apply to damage done by a peel? Also, why does damage take this long to show? I really just don't understand why this is only becoming apparent now and it is really affecting me mentally. I have dark skin, don't go out in the sun, and I wear sunscreen when I do. I have not been applying any products that could cause something like this to happen (or appear). I want to know the mechanism behind what I am experiencing, and most importantly, how I can resolve it.

Please advise,

Thank You.

Cosma, I feel you, skin troubles are highly distressing, but I do not believe a single peel nearly ten years ago is responsible for the issues you are perceiving. UNLESS, you had say a medium depth TCA or deeper peel, and then were not religious about sun protection following. But even then, I think some heavy sun exposure for an extended period of time would be required to see significant damage.

But a superficial peel of lactic, glycolic, 15% TCA or less really should not result in fat loss, cross hatching, hyperpigmentation, depressions or enlarged pores almost a decade later.

Have you had any radio frequency procedures, or other cosmetic treatments in that time? RF treatments can be hit or miss, and I have known some people who feel ultrasonic equipment (less common) has resulted in depressions and fat loss.

Ten years is quite a long time and a lot of things can happen internally that eventually reflect on your face. I would look to hormonal changes. I am 39 now, creeping up on 40, and my face has changed quite a bit in the last five years alone. I literally have a whole different skin type now. I used to be oily, and now I am combination dehydrated. When my skin is dehydrated, my face is sunken, sallow, and blotchy. Blotchier now especially because my skin has thinned with the natural aging process. I notice divots and scales and my pores appear larger when I'm dehydrated as well.

Take heart, there is plenty that can be done to remedy the symptoms you are experiencing. I would first consult a professional to determine your skin type and perhaps consider a natural supplement to help balance your hormones. A lot starts happening in your 30's. Maca does wonders for my skin, my mood, and my energy levels.

I would also look into some tools or treatments to build collagen. Retinoids. Vitamin C for discoloration. Arbutin and kojic acid are safe brighteners for dark skin. Sometimes melasma happens regardless of sun exposure, simply because of hormonal fluctuations. Having a child, for instance, can trigger melasma and hyperpigmentation. I am a big fan of LED therapy. My skin is plumper and more moisturized after a single session. They make a huge difference for me, personally.

Seeing a dermatologist is your best starting point, and stay up. It sounds to me that improvement can definitely be achieved.
