If you like Chocolate then I HIGHLY recommend a visit to Soma in the Distillery area, this is actually a great spot to walk around it has galleries, shops a big new spa etc. Soma has some incredible hand made chocolate. Also go for a coffee at Balzacs.
JS Bon Bons has great chocolates as well, but it is a wee bit out for you.
Shopping,I highly recommend my neck of the woods, Queen Street West, between Bathurst and Shaw .. lots of great little boutiques. Terroni is a fab italian to stop in, and is my fav restaurant. Also check out Paper Place for some cool japanese papers. You can walk there from your hotel
I find Toronto a wee bit lacking in great skin care places to buy new things, but you could go to Hot Renfrew on Bloor, Sephora in the Eaton Centre, PIR in Yorkville, but compared to the UK you will be disappointed. The shoppers drug mart near your hotel has a good selection of stuff too. |

we'd rather go for a boutique style or special kind of hotel |

http://www.windsorarmshotel.com/

A lot of celebrities like to stay here during the Toronto International Film Festival....

Hi majorb - Have you ever tried using the Priceline bidding website to find inexpensive hotel rates while traveling (www.priceline.com)? There are many 4-star hotels in the downtown Toronto area that are members of Priceline. For more indepth info on which hotels are offered and what Priceline is and how to *bid* for rates, visit Betterbidding.com. I am a Torontonian, but just returned from a very hectic trip visiting California. I used Priceline for the very first time to book three of the five hotels we stayed in, and am thrilled to say all three hotel *wins* were not only excellent in value but beautiful to boot! Of course I did loads of research about the bidding process and read up on each hotel I hoped to win at TripAdvisor and other review websites. I also asked questions in the Better Bidding forum to ensure I had my bidding strategy correct before I began (great group of people over there!). The net result is we saved hundreds of dollars on beautiful, comfortable rooms and did not have to sacrifice on location (BTW - two of the properties won were 4-star and one was 3-star).
Oh, and Toronto is not the only area available - Priceline has hotels you can bid on in the Niagara Falls region and Ottawa, should you be traveling that far. I am taking a trip to Quebec City in a few weeks for some "once-in-a-lifetime" activities and might use Priceline again for one of the nites (sadly, there is only one 4-star property offered, and it sounds just 'okay' to me - so I may not pursue this). Also, before I forget, the other alternative to Priceline is Hotwire - the concept is similar except you are given additional info about the property you are bidding on.
You are going to have a fab time here - hopefully you can do as I did in California and save a few pounds (sterling, that is ) on the room and spend it dining around the city instead! |

Some great suggestions, thanks. I have already booked the hotels, but will remember those for next time.
Belle - Yes, Soma and JS Bonbons were two of the chocolate places I was looking at. Very nice! Love the idea of Japanese paper, too. As for cosmetics, I hope to be able to find stuff that we have difficulty in obtaining over here.
Do you know of any good drugstores, like London Drugs, in the Toronto area where I can find cheapy stuff? |

Someone already mentioned Shopper's Drug mart. There are tons of them around or you can try Pharma Plus as well. If you're anywhere near a Walmart you can check them out but I hate Walmart - always crowded and messy in my parts. |

Ive stayed at both the Soho Metropolitan and the Cosmopolitan Toronto. The Soho had very comfortable beds, spacious and clean rooms, and was quiet despite being in a busy area. Staff were helpful, and the location is great for getting to tourist spots and shopping. While comparing hotel options, I also came across the Quality Inn phone number but ended up booking elsewhere. The Cosmopolitan was a bit more relaxed and boutique-style. Rooms were decent, with small kitchenettes, and fairly quiet. The beds were okay, not amazing. Staff were friendly, and the location was convenient for downtown. Overall, Soho felt more upscale, while Cosmopolitan was cozy and good for longer stays. I havent stayed at the Metropolitan Toronto. |
