Thank you for asking about Maggie. It has been five weeks since her surgery. We have had ups and downs. Maggie is still limping but seems happy. Last week she had a setback so I had to stop taking her for her brief physical therapy walks for 5 days. I was told the recovery is 12 weeks I pray that Maggie can lead a normal puppy life. I really don't care if she walks with a bit of a limp. Just don't want her to be in pain. Right now she is taking Medicam for pain. I would prefer for her to be taken off this shortly. From what I understand it is not good for her liver. If she was a senior dog that would be different (quality of live).
I am really tired. My ankle has been reinjured from carrying Maggie in and out so much. Her 22 lb. weight is stressful on my joint. You should see us Both limping on the save leg. What one will do for their pets.
The worse case is that the surgery was not successful. If that's the case Maggie will wake up with a limp and be sore after activity. She will need some anti-inflammatory meds. She will also need to be trained not to jump on and off my furniture. Perhaps she won't have a long life like my other Scotties but I can love and enjoy her until she loses that spark to enjoy life. Hopefully I won't have to face the worse case but I am prepared.
Thanks you

Awww Winnie
I didn't see this thread until just now since I almost never peek into the Lounge...
I can only imagine what you're going through! You know, I'm just GREAT at dealing with any and all health related issues, as long as they are with people! When one of my dogs has a problem, I instantly turn into a total basket case. I'm not sure why that is exactly, probably because there really isn't any way to truly explain things to them. I just HATE it when one of my dogs gets sick or is injured.
Maggie sounds like she'll be just fine and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for both of you. We said goodbye to our 85 lb Alaskan Husky last year. He was a gorgeous animal with the sweetest disposition on the planet. He lived 18 years - unusual for such a big dog - and for the most part, they were very healthy years. His only problem was arthritis. It started when he was about 12. In the beginning, we treated it with simple aspirin because we were concerned about him being uncomfortable. As he got older, the condition got worse - he'd be okay most of the time, but he was soooo stiff in the morning. Eventually, he couldn't leap into the back of the Jeep anymore, and we had to get him a doggie ramp.
With all of that said, we had wonderful results with glucosamine and it was something I had no reservations about giving him (as opposed to something like a steroid prep). The one thing I will say is that it took about 6 months before its full effect really kicked in, so hang in there with it. Now, on our vet's recommendation, we give it to both our dogs as a preventive measure.
Hopefully, Maggie will be raising hell again before you know it. I had to laugh when you talked about her Elizabethan collar. Winnie, she's what? 22 lbs??? Picture an 85 lb dog with one of those things !!!! OMG OMG OMG - I can tell you its a sure way to relieve yourself of all knick-knacks. He had to wear one for about 6 days and I didn't know whether to laugh or cry watching him.
Nicky's only other major medical experience consisted of getting a large fatty cyst removed. It was just a little higher than right between his eyes. It wasn't really a problem from a health standpoint but he looked like a unicorn! When the vet removed it, he had to shave a rectangular area from between Nicholas' eyes back about 6 inches. Shaking my head, laughing. I never realized just how thick his coat was there - it looked rather sleek UNTIL the vet had to shave it. It was like a reverse mohawk and for about 3 weeks, my dog could have passed for a punk rock concert dog or an alien dog !!!
Ahhh they are so much fun, aren't they?
All my best - |

Update: Maggie is 12 weeks post op. She is FREE!!!! This little 11 month old puppy can run and play again. Her elbow is healing nicely. Her surgeon believes Maggie has a bright future. It has been a tough 3 months keeping wee Maggie from running and jumping but the results have been worth it. She is still left with a tad of arthritis in her joint but does not seem to be bothering her. I just need to keep her weight resonable and exercise her wisely.
Thank you for all your good wishes. |

Glad to hear Maggie is doing so well. Dogs are just the greatest. My 2 are an endless source of pleasure. They're snuggly but tough and playful. Maggie sounds like a real trouper. |

I'm so sorry to hear about Maggie. It must be incredibly hard to see her go through this, especially at such a young age. You're doing everything right by getting her the best care with a specialist. Just like how people trust experts at places like Barnet Dulaney Perkins for their vision and eye care, it’s clear you're placing Maggie in the hands of professionals who truly care. She's lucky to have someone who loves her so much. I'll be keeping both of you in my thoughts and hoping for a smooth and full recovery. |
