Yaaay, a new forum where we can ask non-beauty questions! Thanks Magda!
I've come to appreciate the EDS forum participants for more than just beauty and skincare advice. I've noticed many of you have a wide scope of knowledge on a variety of subjects and you enjoy traveling.
By any chance, has anyone been to Greece? I'm planning a trip to Athens and Santorini this spring and could use advice from people who've been there!
Thanks!--Alohagirl:P |

Alohagirl,
Yes! But unfortunately that was about 15 years ago and I don't really remember much about it. I remember that it was hot and that it rained for about three days straight (NOT a good thing if you're camping!!!). Hope you have a wonderful time though (and nice weather :P).

Alohagirl Greece is wonderful, so much to do and see and of course good weather(well for me anyway-I live in the UK). You can combine a beach hol with a cultural hol.
Unfortunately I haven't been to Athens or Santorini, but I have been to Kefalonia, Rhodes, Kos and Cyprus.
I imagine Santorini will be more like Kefalonia, which when I went 5 years ago was less commercialised than the other islands (although after Cpt. Corelli's thingy was filmed there I have heard it has had a major tourist boom, but I do hope it hasn't lost it's charm).
The locals are so friendly and kind. On Kefalonia to get to the beach from our apartment we had to walk down a lovely country lane and every day for 2 weeks (I'm not kidding - every day) the little old lady who lived in one of the farm houses would present us with a bunch of grapes or some oranges and other fruit from her garden, she couldn't speak a word of English so on the last day to thank her we gave her a bunch of flowers and she started to cry.
Anyway I hope you enjoy your time in Greece as much as I have.
Me and my partner had a trip to Mexico (playa del carmen) coming up in a week and a half, unfortunately he snapped his Achilles tendon a few weeks ago and we have had to cancel our hol. So if anyone has been there I would love to hear about it. |

Thanks for the replies, ladies.
Mabsy,
Do you remember what time of year you were there? (I hope I'll be missing the rainy season!)
Lady Jane,
Thanks for the wonderful story. I don't know much about Greece (yet) but somehow I didn't imagine it to be such a friendly country. I'm really touched by that woman's kindness and generosity to strangers!
Could you tell me how you located an apartment to stay in? I'm hoping to find one like Darryl Hannah and Peter Gallagher's in the movie "Summer Lovers." That film is what made us want to go to Greece in the first place.
(Not the "menage a tois" thing, just the location!)

Alohagirl,
That was in Athens and it must have been in July (summer school holidays in Poland are around that time from memory). I think we just got very unlucky with the weather that's all.
Mabsy
ps. Alohagirl - LOL! I haven't seen the movie but i might just get it out on video sometime soon! |

A very good friend went to Santorini on her honeymoon and said it was the most beautiful place, of course she might have had her beer googles on, Uk term for rose coloured specs. Probably a bit too late for your trip, hope you had a good time. |

hey alohagirl,
I've been twice as an adult. In 96 for 6 months and 2000 for 2 months. (My parents are both Greek so I could crash at my mum's sisters place between travelling)
I loved it, went to santorini both times, as it was unbelieveable. It's picture perfect!! Everyday you would get a cramped bus to a different beach and laze around till you were hungry, head back to the main town (which i recommed to stay in if you want to party into the night) sit about a tavern with a view and eat, go back and shower, get beatiful, and then off to wander the streets, and drink up at the clubs. Ohh the memories are flooding back now..
If you go to any islands Santorini is a must!!!!!
I was based in athens and even though I was abit confused at the start, I became very found of the place. The shopping is great too. Heaps of things to see, as the city is full of culture and history (even though i was abit slack and partied most nights and shopped most days. I didn't even go to the acropollis until the second time i was there).
I was there from start of July both times, it's the real busy season though, and its hot, humid, and hot again. Not humid on islands thought. The people in athens are very abrupt and it seems rude as, but you get used to it, the villagers though are gorgeous though. Since all their income comes from tourists on the islands, they are alot more pleasant.
One suggestion though, i BEG you if you go, please do not hire a vespa on the islands as everyone does. It's so dangerous, I've heard and seen terrible things. The roads are difficult, and people that aren't experienced riders can't handle it. Stay off the motorbikes!!!!!!!!
Gosh, i could go on forever.
Oh yeah, and santorini is commercial, sorry, but you'll still love it.
Did I actually help or just remenise??
Take care

Thank you so much, athan! Your reminiscing did help. Now I'm really excited to go!
I appreciate the warning about encountering rude people in Athens--it won't bother me as much if I expect it. And thanks too for the warning about the motorbikes. During my university days I had a scary crash on one of those. I don't care to have another!!!

It's some years since I've been to either but I remember the great outdoor market in Athens and the museum. Fantastic if you like that kind of thing. Athens is a great place if you want to travel to some of the other islands. Aegina is small and where all the Athenians would nip over to for the weekends.
Santorini again if small but beautifully picturesque and a fascinating history. Have a great time.
BTW the jewellry is great! |

Thanks, Eve.
I hadn't heard about the outdoor market--I love those. Hadn't heard about the jewelry, either. Instead of miscellaneous souvenirs, I like to buy one unique piece of jewelry as a remembrance of a great trip. (A black pearl pendant from Tahiti, silver Celtic hair clip from Scotland, etc.) |

Yes. you should find plenty of nice gold and silver. Some based on greek artifacts found on the islands.
Pottery is also good.
Here is something I brought back with me. A Bee necklace.
If you click on the link on the left hand side. 'Jewelry'
http://www.ou.edu/finearts/art/ahi4913/aegeanhtml/framesetmycenaen.html
Also they used to base the price on the weight of gold used. Not sure if this still applies with all the Euro changes. |
