question regarding bottles for DIY

does it necessarily have to be glass bottles for c-serum? wouldn't plastic do just as well? or does it melt from the vit-c or something Shock

can one make up a batch of aspirin mask and keep it in a say 50 ml jar, or does it loose it's properties if you do that? and I suppose the same question regarding plastic versus glass applies here...

Ruth, do you have any Neal's Yard products, if you do and know that you will be using them up quite quickly then decant the Neal's Yard into the plastic and use the fantastic Neal's Yard purple glass bottles for your vitamin C.
Also if you have any other skincare products that come in glass jars, just decant and use the glass jar.

I also did this with some old clinique products I found at the back of a cupboard.

Oh and another idea is when you are food shopping, keep an eye out for any inexpensive food items that come in glass jars, herb bottles and cookery essences come in nicely sized glass bottles that would be an ideal size for homemade vitamin C serum.

Hi Ruth,

While some of the blue or purple glass bottles are attractive, only amber glass filters out UV rays.

Since l-ascorbic acid degrades with light exposure, your best bet is for amber glass.

Plastic bottles are often unable to be sterilized. I've had several "melt" during the process ... and it's always a good idea to sterilize bottles before making a new batch of Vitamin C serum.

As for the aspirin mask ... you can make it up in larger batches. It won't lose it's potency ... at least to the best of my knowledge it won't degrade.

I've actually just used my saved decleor glass jar and little glass bottle + a plastic bottle for homemade oil, ACV toner and some Decleor prolagene gel. Now I'm hunting through all my stuff to find something good for putting some MDF facial cleanser in.

I'm off home to Sweden tomorrow (I've emigrated to Denmark) to see my mum and girlfriends. One of my friends has developed a seriouse case of spots all over her face and particularly around her mouth, and I strongly suspect she's using crap products - so I've been putting together some goodies for her as a sort of starting kit and we'll see how it goes. I hope it helps cause it's really getting to her.

You know, I’ve always had my reservations about the gorgeous little frosted glass bottle that my Decleor Aromessence Ylang Ylang oil came in because while the glass *is* frosted and looks opaque, I’m not 100% certain that it protects the essential oils from becoming degraded by the direct sunlight. BTW, Ruth, you can probably infer this from my question above, but if you’re making homemade potions that contain essential oils, you also want to keep those in amber or cobalt GLASS bottles so the EOs don’t lose their effectiveness. It’s important to store your homemade goodies containing EOs in glass bottles because the EOs are so potent that some of them can actually cause plastic containers to begin dissolving, thereby causing the plastic to begin “leeching” toxins from the plastic into the oils....

Slightly OT here, but, plastic containers can actually be pretty scary all around! That’s why they want us to recycle all plastic containers because they will never properly biodegrade in landfills and when they do begin to break down, they leach some very nasty, very toxic stuff into the ground which eventually makes it into our underground water tables.

I guess I’m more familar than most to the possible dangers of plastic because my ex-dad was an executive with a company that made plastic and plexi-glass related products, so while he was out there promoting the wonders of plastic to the world, he’d be privately telling us what to watch out for. An example is when his company worked with Dupont back in the early 70s when Dupont introduced that “Silverstone Non-stick Surface” that was so revolutionary back then but which is common-place in cooking pots and pans these days. I mean, who doesn’t love cooking an omelet in a non-stick skillet, right? Never knowing that once the cooking pan reached a certain temperature that it actually begins leaching deadly toxins into your food! Shock

My ex-dad wouldn’t even let my mom have any of the non-stick pots or pans in the house because they were so dangerous! And now they’ve recently “invented” those baking pans and sheets that are made completely out of this flexible plastic stuff. Yeah, you pop that cookie sheet in the oven to bake your homemade chocolate chip cookies on 400 degrees F, and all the while you’re unknowingly releasing horrible poisons into your home-baked goodies...and then the scientists wonder why there are so many “unexplainable” outbreaks of cancer these days when the patients don’t appear to have any of the other typical risk factors.

Okay, off my soapbox and back on to the subject: when you’re making homemade skincare items that contain essential oils, make sure you store them in amber or cobalt glass bottles to maintain the potency of the oils – as well as your own overall health!

Like Rosebud, I like to keep and recycle the amber or cobalt bottles that my essential oils came in once they become empty. I make my mom take a liquid form of Echinacea to help boost her immune system because she suffers from horrific respitory problems, and I get her to save those empty amber bottles for me too! In fact, you might say I’ve gone nuts recycling all kinds of glass or plastic bottles to use later for some skincare experiment or another. If you’re among the members to whom I’ve sent propylene glycol or Vit-C crystals, you’ll remember that I “packaged” the items in those amber plastic pill bottles that the pharmacist uses to fill your medical prescriptions! I actually had to buy a set of storage baskets in which to sort and keep all of my glass and plastic bottles, jars and containers clean and at the ready. Smile

I need them for when I start distributing my homemade lash serum to all of my volunteer guinea pigs, Mabsy gave me a link to a website called makeyourowncosmetics.com or something like that, but when I tried to access the site, it was blocked by my internet host as being “obscene,” Shock

so I need to find somewhere else to look.

Are you serious? There was nothing obscene about it - I wonder why they blocked it. All the sites that I found (about three or four in the end I think) had the tubes at a pretty high cost - around $1 to $3, even more for "nicer" ones.
