In my experience with headaches, nothing that I've smelled has made them better, and most smells actually make them a whole lot worse. That being said, lavender seems to be one of the few oils I can tolerate when I have a headache, so trying it can't hurt. My advice would be to try an eye pillow that blocks out the light (light sometimes exacerbates bad headaches), is cold (cold helps headaches in my experience), and has lavender for aromatherapy. I like to use something like this:

I keep it in the freezer in a ziploc until I need it, and then when a headache hits I lie down and place it over my eyes. It helps a lot! |

I have heard about lavender oil helping - massage a little into your temples. With any essential oils a little goes a long way so be careful not to use too much or the smell can be overpowering.
I hope this helps. Headaches and especially bad ones or migraines are just unbearable sometimes |

If you can't find the Migrastik, if you have a Bath & Bodyworks near you I stopped in today and found they now have aromatherapy roll-ons for $10. Their headache blend is peppermint and rose geranium:
