Something I don't see mentioned is as the human race is living longer our bones may well "go" if not used and cared for by supplements, healthy diet and exercise. However what gives out faster by far are cartilage, tendons and ligaments, they are much softer tissues than bone and the main reason for knee and hip replacements amongst the elderly in our population. |
So true!!! |

DEXA or DXA stands for Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry and is a means of measuring bone mineral density (BMD). Osteoporosis is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) in women as a bone mineral density 2.5 standard deviations below peak bone mass (20-year-old healthy female average) as measured by DXA.
Are we confusing bone mass and bone density? I did find this NASA article which examines how long it takes to rebuild bone lost during space flights:
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/science/subregional_bone.html
Note the following paragraph from the article:

The study also found that a year after each crew member had returned to Earth, much of their lost bone mass was replaced. However, the bone structure and density had not returned to normal and signs of hip strength had not recovered at one year, although it had increased slightly compared to post-flight levels. |
Does anyone know if the loss of bone density experienced with menopause and aging is actually visible to the naked eye? The assumption being made is yes but from what I have read osteoporosis itself has no specific symptoms. The main consequence is the increased risk of bone fractures particularly in the spine, hip, rib and wrist areas (no mention of facial bones). |

I just wanted to mention that while I was attending one of Dr. Bob Marshall's seminars there were several people there (with Ph.D. degrees, etc.) whose specialty is osteoporosis/osteopenia treatments, and they were there to learn his protocol, since he seems to be extremely successful in treating it holistically. So if anyone is interested they can look him up on the web.
