Forgive me if this has already been suggested - I didn't have time to read all the posts - but if you start to grow back the prickly kind of stubble, couldn't you use the cream (ie Sally Hansen or whatever) on it and then wouldn't it then grow back as fine as when you started? Doesn't that dissolve the hair just beneath the surface?
Michelle
PS I hope I did this right - until now I've just been lurking! |

Mountaingirl, you are beautiful! You do not look 54 at all! I did my first shave yesterday and it was fine. My skin felt very smooth.
Can you please post your shaving routine from start to finish? I am curious if you dry shave or use a cream, do you do the downward strokes everywhere (even on your forehead)? Do you shave your neck too (or right under the jawline)? Someone asked what kind of razor you use, I would also like to know. How often do you change razors? How often do you shave?
Thank you! |

Mountain girl, I have an appt to get my first electrolysis treatment on my moustache,I dont even want to tell the esthecian that I have started to shave because I am sure she will yell at me and tell me to stop! I think i will just electro the moustache and chin hairs, maybe brow area, cant do whole face that would cost 20,000 I am sure, besides on your advice I need to shave. |

Question: So if you shave your face, does it feel stubbly/rough when it's growing back? For instance, if someone touched your face or brushed against it, would they feel the little blunt hairs and know you had shaved? |

I shave it about 3 times a week, I never really let it get to the point that there is stubble. Maybe if you have really dark, thick hair but, mine is fine and blonde. |

I have a question for those of you that shave... do you still exfoliate your face with some other product/method on a regular basis? Or do you just count shaving as your exfoliation? |

Hi ariesxtreme
Sorry I didn't reply to your post earlier, I have been busy with Christmas and my family and the mother in law.
Anyways, yes I went for 5 sessions of laser therapy and it was working. I didn't have to shave as much. I got pregnant and they said the laser wouldn't effect the baby but because of all the pregnancy hormones, the laser would be ineffective, and I would be wasting my money.
They said I could continue once the baby is born. (10 months later, and I haven't returned to laser therapy because I am still breast feeding, and I really don't want to harm my child if anything should get into the milk). I will go back though as soon as I can.
My hair had lessened with the treatments. I do notice now that I have to shave more frequently than a few months ago. |

I still use the aspirin mask maybe every week 1/2 but, shaving is such deep exfoliation I dont feel the need for much else very often... |

I use exfoliating products in addition to shaving. I shave once a week and do a peel or mask every other day, unless my skin is irritated in which case I leave it completely alone except for gentle moisturizers/oils.

I have been dry shaving lately, but in the past used a skin cleanser. I shave every day, but it is not necessary to do it daily. I have a mirror in the shower and use any old razor I have laying around, changing the blade every month or so. Some folks are better off keeping one razor for legs, one for face. My dermatologist adviced me years ago, to shave this way: alway in a downward direction (I don't know why)--start by your nose (no, don't shave your nose) and shave out towards the sides of your face. When I shave my chin, forehead and upper lip area (and sometimes lips ) I shave straight down. My crows feet I shave out towards my hairline. When I shave my chin, I shave to just below the jawline. I have never done my neck. The skin feels too delicate for that. I tried my upper chest a few times, which is splotchy from sundamage, but my skin was too sensitive (got prickly spots) and I never did it again. I always shave my arms too. No,I don't have stubble but if I rub my tongue above my lip in an upward direction, I can slightly feel where the peach fuzz is. It is not stubble like a man though and cannot even be felt with your fingerstips, it is so subtle. I've done my share of kissing, and no man has ever detected anything...but they always say something about how good my skin looks. In terms of other exfoliation, I think that's fine to do when you're shaving. I use SpaGirls home microdermabrasion every few weeks or so. Lucyluc...I'm glad you're getting the electrolosis. I think getting rid of any course hair first, is advisable if you're going to start shaving. |

never, i dont have hair to shave though, i am asian.
I am Asian and have WAY too much facial hair. I actually go for threading to get rid of it (I react badly to wax and don't have the money to go for Laser treatments). Sometimes if I'm really pressed for time and haven't had the chance to go for threading, I'll shave it off, but that's rare. |
I think Far East Asians (Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Malays, Vietnamese etc) generally don't have a lot of body/facial hair. |
I am Chinese actually, so the myth about East Asians not having a lot of facial hair isn't true - it's not just me but I know quite a few others with a lot of facial hair. The big problem is I have black hair (of course) but I'm pretty pale, so any facial hair on me shows up! |
maiea i do believe it has something to do with your diets. if you go to asia countries such as japan, china and korea, you will see those people have less facial hair than those asians grew up in western countries. |
I'm a chinese, but i have way too much facial hair too, though i think i got from my mom
But have never shaved my face, don't think i'll ever try to do that either... i do mess around my upper lip with a tweezer.
I hope some new invention will come out for this |

Here in South-east Asia, we don't shave our faces but we have this practice of threading. It's akin to shaving but how it works is that a therapist will smooth some baby powder on your face and then use threads (yes sewing threads haha) over your face. Somehow they get all the facial hair off without scrapping the skin. It's quite amazing, even more so that it really works But I personally still prefer to wax as i usually only remove the facial hairs on my upper lip |

one of the concerns I have with shaving is increasing the chance of a skin infection. Shaving does create micro abrasions and does increase chance of infection quite a bit -- look at studies on surgeries where shaving the area first really increases chance of infection -- and women who shave their lady bits bald also are more prone to vaginal infections because of the irritation. So my worry would be that if you're the type that's prone to acne or bacterial or fungal dermatitis, it could make it worse. Sounds like most of your ladies are doing fine, but I do have issues with breakouts and dermatitis so it worries me. |

Does anyone who shaves their face have a follow-up to share with us? How is the face shaving going for you? Has anyone experienced breakouts? Has anyone gotten any ingrown hairs? Has anyone grown thicker/darker facial hair? Any regrets, anyone?
I'm still trying to get up the nerve to try it! |

I did not experience anything you mentioned but...... When I first started, I had at least 1 or 2 cuts on my face every time I shaved. After I stopped cutting my face I began to cut my fingers. Now, all cutting stopped but my eyebrows are getting skinner and skiner and skinner and skinner..... |

I tried shaving my upper lip about 2 years ago, what a mistake. I started getting a bit of a blond moustache and the hairs were very fine but seemed in more abundance than I had ever had before. In about a week or so I started getting much coarser and some darker hair regrowth. I did it again of course but now I only wax and will NEVER shave again. |

I tried the shaving several times as an anti aging regimen. I broke out alot all over and I don't think it was that great for my skin. I have dry, thin, sensitive skin. I can't even exfoliate more than once a week as this also makes me break out. I wish it worked for me as this seems so inexpensive and so effective for some. |

Swissmom: Did you use the same razor you use on your legs? If you decide to try it again, I would use a separate one for your face, and since you are sensitive, maybe one with only one blade. Don't bear down, shave lightly.
Kellyks: when you shave, the hair does grow in with a blunt tip so it feels courser, but it will not increase the growth. If that was the case, everyone wanting to grow hair would be shaving diligently to make hair grow. I never recommend that you shave any area that is very hairy, but remove the hair permanently first, before you start (waxing, electrolysis, whatever.) I had electrolysis 30 yrs ago around the moustache area to remove some fine, but darkish hair and I'm so glad I did that. I'm sorry shaving has not worked for you. I can't even imagine what my skin might look like if I hadn't started 13 years ago. Well, actually, I do know. Yesterday at work I went to the window, and examined my skin with a 7X mirror. (I have these because I work on grooming with people with low vision.) I was looking at my jawline and saw the demarcation where I stop shaving (just under my jawline, and under my chin.) The skin was completely different!--dull, crepey and older looking. I was shocked. I had to ask myself why I haven't been shaving below the jawline all these years, and I guess its because the doc that got me started, never mentioned doing that. SHEESH! Well, let me tell, the razor went there this morning and will from now on! |

I may try the face shaving after my face calms down from the Veet Facial Waxing Strips incident 2 weeks ago. I tried to remove the blonde fuzz around the jawline of my face with these facial waxing strips, and broke up with many large pimples along my jawline on both sides of my face. So, it is almost 2 weeks and and there a still a few remnants of pimples, just waiting for the area to clear up and maybe will try shaving. |

I have peach fuzz on my lower cheeks which I shave about every other month or so. It's not noticeable but I find my make-up goes on so much easier and my skin feels so soft afterwards. I have been doing this for about 3 years and the hair does not grow back darker or thicker. I use one of those small electric razors that are used for trimming nose hair I think. Works great on the face. |
