I'll probably do some mini-reviews on each one as there are too many coming to do anything too lengthy, unless of course I fall in love with a few and do longer ones.
I'll let you know what I think of the Hypnose, I'll try it first! Now if they would just get here! |

OMG someone stop me please. I just purchased the full size parfum of the Bal a Versailles, Caron's Parfum Sacre AND Nocturnes, and Vol de Nuit by Guerlain. I'm out of control! I haven't even been on the skincare board for a week I'm getting so into fragrances now. I think I've hit just about every perfume site on the net and am actually considering joining one of the forums! Yikes!
I'm so in trouble. This is fast becoming quite the * spam alert *.
Is there a 10 step program for fragrance junkies? Quick, gimme the number!! |

Glad you enjoyed the reviews. I tried a couple of new scents on a very brief visit to Les Senteurs but, as I was scurrying around London at the time, didn't have time to keep sniffing them so can't do a review.
They were:
Angelique Encens by Creed - Not too heavy, with a definite angelica scent. Rather nice finish, actually.
En Passant by Frédéric Malle - Very light, sweet smell with new-mown grass. Started off quite well on me, but quickly became strange and not so good. But it did finally settle into something quite pleasant. Wouldn't buy, though. |

Well, I finally received the first of my sample orders, and as promised (to smoothskin) The first on the agenda is:
HYPNOSE
I have had this scent on for 2 hours now, and have not found anything to love about this particular composition.
Unfortunately, the very loud passion flower note that this fragrance opened with, is still hanging on for dear life! The vitiver, vanilla and oriental woods were so fleeting as to not have been there at all. I find this extremely reminiscent of Ormonde Jane's Frangipani, which sadly for me was a floral bouquet from start to finish. I don't dislike it really, but like the OJ's, can't really love it either! This one's not for me.... at least not right now anyway. I'll put it in my "try again" in a few months drawer. |

sportygirl - Think of it as a blessing. After all, if we adored every single fragrance we tried, we'd be bankrupt!
Still, it is disappointing when you love the idea of a certain scent, only to discover that it doesn't actually suit you. |

I totally agree. I'm going bankrupt just buying samples, so you're right, NOT liking some of them is a mixed blessing!
What I'm actually finding though, is that a lot of fragrances that are touted as orientals, aren't, at not least to my olfactory senses anyway, and are not in any way what I personally think an oriental should be.
I do notice though, that a lot of them can be described differently from one site to another, so this can be confusing too.
What I'm finding is I really need to do my homework, and never buy a fragrance unsniffed.
If you can't get samples then try to at least find miniatures or even decants if you can get them.
There's nothing worse than being stuck with a ginormous bottle of a frag you hate! |

| Sportygirl, maybe Hypnose was just too sweet for you. If you like oriental fragrances, keep an eye on the description of notes. There is a new oriental family often described as gourmand oriental and it is almost edible sweet, notes in this family include; vanilla, cinnamon, almond. licourice. Your more traditional orientals might have a bit of vanilla in there, but deeper, spicier notes too. Have you tried Miller Harris Fleur de Oriental, Trish McEvoy Trish, Prada, and I'll see if I can think of any other true orientals. |

Hi Smoothskin
You're right about the gourmands. I've never liked angel, and although I like small amounts of vanilla and cinnamon, it's chocolate, heavy fruits like figs, and licourice that I can't wear. I tried Lolita Lempicka on the WE and couldn't wait to wash it off! I really just can't handle these types of frags!
Another note that I am finding unwearable is really sweet heavy white flowers like Passion flower, Frangipani and Queen of the Nile. These actually make me kind of nauseous and are extremely cloying on me!
I'm happy to say, I do have sample's of Prada and Trish coming, and will try to get the Fleur de Oriental as well. Thanks!
I have SJP's Lovely on right now, but again, very sweet, heavy and cloying. I will let it dry down for a final analysis, but I don't think so.... |

Caron's POIVRE revisited!
Because I've never met a Caron that I didn't love, I was mystified by my lack of love for this one, and decided to give it another shot. I applied it again on Sunday morning, and as I experienced the same hot peppery opening, I was amazed to find myself falling hard for this rather complex and delicious scent! From the opening notes through the heart to the sultry leather drydown, I slowly became quite enamoured with this very beautiful and unusual fragrance. The longer I had it on the more in love with it I became, and I'm thrilled to say, I still haven't met a Caron I don't LOVE! I will be purchasing the full size, and I'm very glad I decided to re-try! |

RUMBA by Balenciaga
From the samples I have tried so far, this one has surprised me the most. With fruity top notes like peach and plum, I really did not expect to like this one too much. But was I ever wrong!
It opens like gangbusters (almost too much at first), but the fruits quickly mingle with several flower notes which eventually warm down even further into a hot and sexy amber, leather, vanilla and oakmoss base.
Imagine sitting in a dark smoke filled bar, somewhere in the tropics wearing a silk dress, spiked heels, red lipstick, and smoking a very large Cohiba.
This one is Hot! Not for those of you who enjoy sweet, floral or fresh scents.
If you want to make a statement, this ones for you. I love it!
TOP - mirabelle, peach, plum
HEART - orchid, magnolia, gardenia, jasmine, Indian carnation, patchouli
BASE - amber, leather, vanilla, oakmoss |

Oh, my favorite is Coco Chanel. I use to like Chanel 5, but I got tierd of it. You need to change parfume sometimes. Another thing is that not every fragrance is "your" type. Usually if the fragrance is "yours" you don't feel/smell it from yourself.
I'm looking for a new fragrances, what you described in your post sounds really good.

Lara1, perhaps you could check out the new launches from Chanel? I am so excited about these fragrances and can't wait to get to a Chanel boutique to try them. Soir de Lune could be another great one for you as it belongs to the chypre family, but it is not as sparkling as no5, a bit heavier due to the opulent floral heart.
Poohlisey, you can't jump up and down applauding the reviews without revealing your favorite fragrances |

You bet! We can start looking for a cardboard box for two. We'll just set up housekeeping in an alley behind a perfumerie!

Oh, and I'm getting addicted to this scent, I actually wore it to bed last nite, and then reapplied it again this morning! I think Balenciaga's putting "crack" in this stuff! |

Yes, being "in love" is a good analagy, especially when I'm "going to bed" with them. |

Today was an amazing fragrance day for me! I have a habit of starting the day on one fragrance and changing after a few hours. I know it is not exactly ideal, but I sort of have a feel of what could mix well if there is a hint of the first fragrance left... I started the day with the new Lauder launch, which bored me and I needed to change -
Well, it was Il Profumo and their wonderful Chocolate trio that tickled my fancy today. I was not shy and tried all three on different parts of my arms, after all these are meant to be layered if one so desires. Il Profumo is pure quality, created by an Italian aromatherapist who believes in using the most natural, purest raw material available. Many of the fragrances are single note by name, but more complex by composition.
There is Chocolate Fraise which is chocolate with fruity, peachy notes. Then there is the pure Chocolate which is simply heavenly. Then we move into more sultry notes in the deeper Chocolate Amere. None of these come across as cloying, sweet or edible smelling allthough they are based on chocolate. How could I best describe this contradiction of sorts?
Do you like Angel? Well, when I was told there was chocolate in angel I sort of went "Oh yes, I can pick that up now." This is kind of like that and Angel is a good comparison because these are bold and unique like Angel, but not as heady or sweet. Hmm... the more I write the more confusing this sounds, so I'll sign off with a recommendation to try this range and if you don't love the chocolates try Royal Gardenia, Patchouli, Amour or Macadema, and of course this company has a great quality musk. |

It's like a neverending battle. As soon as I draw up a list of fragrances to try and start wading my way through them, certain people (mentioning no names) keep forcing me to add more to my list.
Stop it immediately! |

Just remember you don't have to own all these fragrances to appreciate the experience of them
I am sure one of the Il Profumos might find a way into your collection though... They are just really gorgeous. I am trying to resist at the moment, but I would feel so satisfied if I had all the chocolate ones, and a few more... |

BURBERRY by Burberry for women:
If you like Opium (I love it!), take about a quarter of Opium's ego and add a dash of black current and peach and you get a fragrance that opens with a gorgeous smelling top of lavender, peach, marigold, black current and jasmine, which slowly warms up to a beautiful light oriental of cedarwood, amber, tonka bean, sandalwood and vanilla. This one is slightly reminiscent of the older, classier orientals, before all of the overly fruity, fresh, chypre, and sweet modern orientals hit the mass market. Very light, so great for daytime wear, even in close quarters I think. IMO, Burberry got it right with this one! |
