bethany: thank you, I'll check out that site! And you're right, a bit over a pound a week is very do-able, and I would love to be able to get my weight down a bit more.
Hope you feel better soon. I'll second the suggestion of going for nice green teas to drink rather than diet coke. I found that once I made the switch myself, you do feel better. Also remember to drink your 8 glasses of water a day and try to stay hydrated. It's great for your skin too!
mpstat: wow! Good luck with that.
zoskinhealth: You can do it! That's what I was hoping for too - if I announced it to you guys on this thread, hopefully I'll be good and keep on losing weight too. Like you, I could never, ever stay on a diet.. but I think taking small steps at a time helps a lot. My first step was to cut my ice cream intake... once I had that down, I worked on my soft drink intake, etc, etc. I think little steps like that help with us who can't stick to dieting.
rileygirl: Thanks! It was (mentally) a really big step for me to finally decide to lose the weight. When I think back a year ago, and look at the clothes I was wearing, it's pretty mind boggling. |

I am struggling today.
I actually got in the car and was going to get junkfood. I managed to talk myself out of it and ended up at the supermarket and bought some meat to cook instead. Honestly I will be glad when today is over, I know this is a stress/emotional response to eat, but I also imagine I am going to feel really bad if I do eat the junkfood.
Bethany keep doing the green tea. I say that while I am sitting here drinking diet coke |
WOW...good for you!!! That sounds like some stong willpower to me, and knowing that it is emotionally driven is a huge step! |

I still feel like I have been been run over by a bus. I guess I should be thankful that I am at least on vacation so that I can rest.
I am going back to bed. |

I hope you feel better soon Bethany
I managed to get thru yesterday, thankgod. I was rewarded with a quarter of a pound down on the scales today
I am so happy with this though, as I went up 4lbs immediately after xmas due to the carbs etc. So it only took 4 days to get rid of the excess water weight etc. So now onwards and downwards lol |

Thanks Maiea...I am drinking some tea right now! If I can get through the next couple of days without the withdrawal being too bad, I should be good to go! |

Bethany: Your suggestion of Fitday.com was great. That's really an awesome tool...
It's fast, easy and free (unlike weightwatchers.com). |

It really is awesome...I also have the original PC verison they came out with, and I am sure that the new one is even better.
I think this is the best way for people to truly be accountable and knowledgeable about what they are eating. Even if someone did it just for a week or even a few days, they may learn that what they are REALLY taking in is far different than what they THINK they are taking in.
I just started tracking my food again this morning...the weight is not budging as quickly as I would like, so I am determined to find the problem! |

Here is an interesting article on New Year's Resolutions...I have included some excerpts below:
| Quote: |
How to recharge your New Year's resolution
Clinical psychologist Mark Crawford from Atlanta, Georgia, said almost everyone has something he or she would like to change or improve, but succeeding is another story.
"The first of the year gives everyone a fresh start or a clean slate," Crawford said. "That's what everyone feels good about: 'I can just start new with no failure and go from here.' "
Some of the most popular new year's resolutions, according to Crawford, include improving health and fitness by exercising more and eating less, getting financial affairs in order by paying down debt or saving money, getting organized, spending more time with family members and quitting a bad habit such as smoking.
Some people sabotage themselves by picking unrealistic goals, Crawford said.
"The set themselves up by setting resolutions they really don't think they're going to keep," he said.
"I would encourage people to not make resolutions if you don't think you're going to keep them, because what that does is it sets you up for failure in the future."
"You will make a mistake," he said. "You will have slips, it is part of it."
He suggested using a slip-up to adjust your course and find out what you need to do differently. "Never use it as an excuse to give up your goal or abandon your resolution," he said.
He offered four tips for succeeding.
First: Be specific about your goal.
"For example, saying that you want to lose weight is way too general. You should say, 'I want to lose 10 pounds this year,' " Crawford said.
Second: Set a realistic goal. "Very few people are going to lose 50 pounds in a year," he said. "But losing 5 to 10 pounds is a goal everyone can reach."
Third: Establish a set of steps to help you reach your goal. "You want to add things like, 'I'm going to exercise three times a week and I'm going to eat smaller portions.' Those are the steps that are going to get you to the goal."
Finally, Crawford recommended setting a specific time frame. "Very few people can stay with a goal for an entire year," he said.
"I would say set a goal for about two weeks. Stop to see how you're doing. Pat yourself on the back if you're doing well," he said. "And if you're not, figure out why so that you can revise your plan."
He said you'll know if you're succeeding if you can stick it out for four to six weeks.
"Make it to Valentine's Day, and your chance of continuing is much better," Crawford said.

I just found a very interesting article on better understanding what you eat...here are a couple of excerpts:
| Quote: |
Diet Spy: There May Be More Than 1,000 Hidden Calories in Your Daily Diet!
You get the dressing on the side, you take your chicken grilled, not fried, and you’ve never met a vegetable you didn’t like. If you’re so virtuous, why can’t you shake that extra weight? Stop polishing your halo, and consider this: You may be eating more than you realize.
...
Our diet spy’s recap: “Melanie is inadvertently taking in loads of extra calories. Each morning, she should plan three meals and two snacks, factoring in on-the-fly nibbles. She says she’d like to find a way to eat a brownie a day without wrecking her waistline. That’s doable. She can have a handful of cashews, Ben’s leftovers, or a brownie—just not all three.”
Nibble: Calories
Venti Frappuccino: 540
Free samples: 97
Half multigrain roll: 75
Grabbed cashews: 468
Ben’s leftovers: 95
Five licks of frosting: 70
Total: 1345
Bonus tip: If Melanie cuts just one-eighth of her 490,925 extra calories a year, she’ll lose 18 pounds after only one year, according to Molly.

I'm still plugging away on the yeast killing diet. At least I have multiple incentives (weight and rashes) to keep me focused, sigh.
I weighed and logged all my food today. The outcome was exactly what I expected for when I am dieting...I am not eating enough. I had 677 calories for the whole day.
Tomorrow I need to focus on increasing that, and also eating more frequently...I got in 3 meals today, but need to have 5 per my doctor. |

677 calories!
I would be sooo hungry and shaky! Are you just so busy you forget to eat? Or maybe the diet coke keeps you feeling full?
I've set a 10-day goal for myself...I need to simply complete this 10-day exercise and eating program. I'm on day 3 so far, and I must say, the workouts are kicking my a$$! Literally, my glutes and hamstrings hurt so much it's hard for me to lean down and pick up a shoe off the floor.
I wrote a review for Amazon (under D. Means) and gave it four stars.

Okay, I really do recommend Weight Watchers. Especially, Bethany, if you're eating 677 calories ANY day(!!) You have to eat to lose. It's all about (re)learning how to eat correctly and how to maintain it -- otherwise, you'll be right back here next year, wanting to lose (again).
I am a Lifetime member who has regained 20 pounds in 12 years. I rejoined tonight, in fact, after having family NOT say "You look great!" when they saw me at the holiday. And the scale doesn't lie -- I need to lose 20 pounds.
It does cost money -- but not a lot of money AT ALL -- and the $$ is part of the investment. If you have spent money for the program, studies show you are more likely to follow it. Also, the eTools and site is pretty magnificent. You don't have to do meetings unless you want to.
Check it out, for the tools and wisdom. It DOES work, and is very, very doable. The support, you'll get right here. |

I am still on my "eat only when hungry, stop before you are full" plan! I have not gained or lost, but it is also my time of the month and I usually will have gained 5 lbs on the scale, but I have not, so something is working. I have done pretty well with eating unprocessed foods, as well. Really trying to cut out the processed foods and eat more "real" foods and I feel better already. I am going to take a break from the very heavy lifting I have been doing and move to a higher rep/lighter weight scheme for a while. I'm using Jari Love DVD's, and she is great but they are intense! I can't do the entire DVD yet.
Bethany, I definitely would follow your docs recommendation on eating more frequently. I think under 1000 calories is ok for a Really, Really short time. But, I think in the long run you need more calories so you don't go into a "starvation" mode! How are you feeling by the way, are you getting better? |

| Girls I just popped in and read the last few posts and don't know if what I am going to say has been said before so forgive me if this is overkill. But...I used to diet all the time and even worked for Diet Center and also was a certified aerobics teacher at a spa. I weigh less now don't diet and do a pilates performer when I think about it. What I found out to be true after 20 some years in the diet and exercise world is you MUST EAT to lose and eat often to keep your metabolism high. I eat more than my 6'2" husband and I am 5' and weigh 103. I eat protein at every meal and go light on fats and almost no sugar. I use stevia as a sweetener which I think really balances blood sugar and the key is keeping the blood sugar stabilized. I struggled for years with yeast problems and digestive problems. Protein for me, limited sugar, and frequent meals is the answer. I no longer live to eat, I eat to live. I have no health issues and at 53 that is really a blessing because I used to live in the doctor's office. I have tried all kinds of eating plans from being a vegan to juicing etc...What works for me is protein. I struggled and stressed over weight for years and almost ended up with a eating disorder. The answer was much simpler than I ever imagined. My one vise is Diet Coke. I drink it and know it isn't good for me I really don't have the conviction to stop. Until then I enjoy it. I hope this helps because when it comes to weight and DIET issues I HAVE TRULY BEEN THERE! |

This is exactly what my doctor recommends, both for weight loss and my yeast problems. He also told me to get a timer if I needed to in order to make myself eat every 3 hours.

I am finally starting to feel better, thank goodness. I can't believe that I am spending my vacation time in bed.
Nadjazz and Sidda - I have a rotten cold right now, am spending a ton of time asleep, and nothing tastes or even smells good. I have virtually no desire to eat. But I did make myself eat something else before I went to bed, so I made sure I got over 1,000 calories. |

Well, I made up for any calorie deficit that I might have had yesterday, lol. I am finally feeling a bit better and was starving, so I ate a huge bowl of clam chowder with oyster crackers. |

It's the carby crackers that will kill me. But when you're sick, it is not a good time to starve yourself, so I went for it! |

You are a tiny thing, aren't you! Thanks for your tips. My sister is always telling me the same thing as well. She is 5'2 and weighs 110 and she eats upwards of 2000 calories, but it is at least 90% healthy food! |

Oh, you poor thing! I know when I'm sick, all I want is for my mommy to make me some home-made soup. Since that's no longer an option , I usually settle for Campbell's chicken noodle soup with saltine crackers. Not very healthy, but certainly comforting!
And I agree...don't starve yourself when you are sick! |
