You are a tiny thing, aren't you! Thanks for your tips. My sister is always telling me the same thing as well. She is 5'2 and weighs 110 and she eats upwards of 2000 calories, but it is at least 90% healthy food! |
One of the secrets to keeping my weight good is my more balanced eating and sensible exercise. My pilates preformer has been key. I used to be a die hard go for the "burn" kinda gal, but no more. I have learned that a more balanced approach keeps food cravings down and is better for the body as a whole. I have found for me the pilates performer is the cadillac of exercise. It is fun, safe, and produces results that teaching my aerobics classes couldn't do. I started using the pilates performer 10 yrs. ago and am still with it. QVC is airing it today and Saturday and Sunday. Check it out, if you are not a TV watching you can view the show live on the QVC website. This is a piece of equipment that people with MS, Fibro, etc. have really gotten help with. My best friend is a physical therapist and she recommends it all the time to her the people she works with.

| Thanks for the info. I will definitely check it out. I do about 1 hour of cardio a day. 3 times a week I do strength training and the other 2 evenings I do pilates. I like pilates. My issues are eating. I love to eat. If I can control the amount I eat, not what I eat. I would be great. That is my goal. |

Thanks again for the tips, Toby. Can you give us an indication of how much these "performers" cost?
Also, can you give us a glimpse of your "typical" daily diet? I always struggle with getting protein at Every meal, so I am curious what your daily diet looks like. |

For anyone looking at Pilates equipment, I would urge you to google it first. It's available many places, and QVC is not the best price, by a long shot.
Also, if you are in a metropolitan area, try Craig's List. Much like the Nordic Track of the 80s, there are many owners who had great intentions, but, um... they could pave the road to Hell all by themselves. |

Riley - thanks for asking...I am FINALLY starting to feel a bit better, though I am still very tired. But the congestion is lessing, so hopefully I will be able to get some better quality sleep.
Alley - I saw your comment on another thread about catching it from your petri dish neice, and had to laugh. My brother caught his cold from his petri dish daughter (3) and then gave it to me for xmas. I can't belive all the crap these little kids bring home! |

Sidda is right there are many places carrying new and used areopilates performers. I bought my second one from Craig's list for 150.00. The deal is watch the shipping- and alot are picked up only. The biggest reason that I mentioned QVC is the demonstration of the product is very good. Also I watch every time it is on to stay motivated. Marjolein Brugman is the spokes person for the machine, she is 54 and her fitness level is an inspiration to me.She got hooked on pilates after suffering from an accident. She was a runner and was hit by a car, the pilates performer was used in her rehab.

Rileygirl, you ask about my diet so here goes--Although I have developed a diet that is for maintaining a good weight, by no means is it ideal. I could go a long way to eating more natural and making sure I have enough variety. My schedule is very busy and it is what what I do to get by. I eat lots of eggs, chicken, fish, beef, and almonds for protein. I don't like fried foods, mayonnaise, salad dressings, butter, or cheese. My downfalls in the dieting days were sweets-there wasn't anything I didn't like in that category.I eat three main meals and two or three snack meals. Snacks for me might be almonds or yogurt(plainw/stevia and blueberries). My diet is probably close to a diabetic diet although I am not diabetic.Ieat lots of fruits and veggies.
My mindsetI don't ever think diet or am food focused. I read a book about 13 years ago called Diets don't work. It changed my way of thinking and I threw out all my diet books and focused more on keeping my metabolism high. I never make desserts and if my husband wants sweets I buy him things that aren't appealing to me. No food is off limits for me but I just don't get in the habit of eating sweets regularly. I eat when I am hungry and stop when I am full(this took some time because I used to be a binge eater) I had to relearn hunger and full. I have a stressful job and many family issues to deal with. I try to surround myself with things I like that bring joy. My three dogs are at the top of that list. I use the aeropilates for exercise and it has done more to get my body toned and tight as anything I have ever done. I don't like floor work with pilates at all, only using the performer. Pilates totally takes my stress away. Learning balance has been key for me because in the past I tended to be too obsessive with things. |

Thanks for posting all that, Toby. I don't think I am a binge eater, just an eater! But, I am really trying to train myself to only eat when hungry and stop when full. This is my downfall, and always has been. I can continue to eat (and eat!) even when I am not hungry or even when I start feeling full. Anyway, thanks again for the info. It helps hearing that someone else has had the same issue that I have and was able to change their mindset! |

Riley, I am the same as you. I need to learn to just stop eating. The trouble is I like the taste of food.
I exercise all the time. I just need to eat less and I would be fine.
Eat less and I could be in top shape. How does one do this, when I like to eat. |

For me it was a mindset first and then it transferred to my body, if that makes sense I would start with foods that don't cause you to overeat(trigger foods). Make sure you get plenty of protein and slow down and enjoy each bite and have something interesting to do following the meal. Stop and ask yourself half way though the meal how you feel(are you really that hungry still)? Also reminding yourself you are going to eat again in 2 or three hours(that starts signaling hey I may not be so hungry if I am eating again in two hours)that two hours later is a snack meal.I am sure there are books written on this. The subject would be helping your body key into true hunger.
Another thought that could be helpful is rather than focusing on many calories you did or didn't consume in a day maybe coming up with a system of rating your hunger at the beginning of a meal, in the middle, and at the end. Then focusing on being able to end a meal with being satisfied not stuffed knowing that you are going to be eating again in a couple of hours. Watch how your ratings change as time goes on. The simple truth is by dieting we have messed up our body's true hunger mechanism. We have forced ourselves to starve and then when we can't hold out we eat and overeat. We have lost that natural God given hunger and full response. To get it back it will take some time and also a new attitude towards the body. If we had never dieted we would be like when we were children and play and play outside with our friends and would stop when we got hungry and then run back outside to play again. Food was not the focus playing and having fun was. The other aspect of trusting your body to stabilize your weight itself. I know that sounds strange but our bodies are made to work very efficiently and we get in the way and mess it up. |

My husband swears that I eat more than he does, and I guess he's right: three meals and three snacks are usual for me. All of the meals and snacks are fairly small but are enough to stop any gnawing feelings in my stomach.
I keep a stash of breakfast stuff at work (quick-cooking oatmeal, chia seed, All-Bran and protein powder) and cook a quick porridge in our office microwave. Co-workers often remark that, although it smells great, it looks a bit like dog throw-up or toxic waste. Whatever! I bring the rest of my daily food from home, so it's waiting in the fridge and I can get at it right away without having to run out and buy something that may not be good for me. Lunch will be leftovers from the previous night's meal (which I cooked) and snacks are low-GI fruit or a mix of cottage cheese, fruit and protein powder or a protein shake.
I tend to get hungry very suddenly and, once that happens, I will mow people down if they get in between me and food! I also try not to drive on a hungry stomach, as it clouds my judgment and it's just not safe.
Dinner presents the most potential for over-consumption at my house, usually because I'm tired and not thinking about what's going into my mouth. After many years of struggling with food/weight difficulties, I've adopted the "sigh" method. I try to eat my dinner at a normal speed (instead of at break-neck speed, like a dog who's afraid that some other dog will steal what's in his dish) and, at a certain point in the meal, I will sigh. It's not a conscious thing, it just happens. That's my signal that I've had enough for the time being, and I get up from the table and put any remaining food on my plate into a container for the next day's work lunch. I assure myself that I can eat more of it later, if I want to, so that I don't fear starvation is imminent.
It may sound goofy, but it works for me.
Congratulations to all of you who are doing good things for your health! Put yourself first, 'cause you are the only one who will. |

Seriously! Of course people keep telling me that if I had produced kids of my own, my immunity would be higher. But then so would my debt and stress levels. |

Yes, you sound exactly like me! I like the taste of food, too! It was actually my son who made me take notice of how I was eating and it was he who told me I did not need to do all this measuring, counting, logging; that I would lose weight if I just ate when I was hungry and stop before I was full. Pretty sharp cookie for only 19!

He is right on the money, but if people have been eating too much for too long, they may not be able to recognize when they are actually full.
My stomach shrinks when I take in less food than usual...I would assume that it can stretch as well? Actually, I think that is how many people who had gastic bypass end up regaining their weight...they stretch their tiny stomach right back to something larger. |

I agree with you, Bethany. Unfortunately in my case, I definitely knew when I was full and just continued to eat! (I am doing much better on this but it takes conscious effort on my part, and questioning from my biggest supporter!) |

Has everyone seen this Oprah magazine article...I am right there with her, sigh.
I am determined to adopt a lifestyle change like Toby did and make this the LAST New Year that I have to focus on losing weight.
| Quote: |
"How Did I Let This Happen Again?"
Four years ago, when Oprah managed to get down to a trim and fit 160 pounds, she thought she'd hit on a foolproof formula for permanent weight loss. Then life—in the form of a thyroid problem and a killer schedule—intervened. Last year she was back up to the 200-pound mark and knew something had to change. After a desperately needed time-out to reflect and recharge, here's what she's learned, what she's doing differently, and what's next.

Wow, this is an awesome thread... count me in! I just read the first 8 pages, and caught up on who everyone is.
I'm another chronic-illness person... my "fibro and chronic fatigue" turned out to actually be Lyme disease, and I've gotten a great deal better with longterm treatment, but still struggle with the ups and downs of health.
I'm on long term, high dose antibiotics, so I have to be pretty diligent about the anti-yeast diet (even though I take an antifungal, too). After getting very lazy with diet this last two years, I got serious about low carb again this past summer, and dropped from 155 lbs to 120 lbs. as of last week. (I'm 5 feet tall, and small framed). Now, I want to blast the last 10 or 15 lbs and get back into shape. My goal weight is 105, or thereabouts. I've been stalled at 120 for a while.
I'm 41, and apparently menopausal...? With the Lyme symptoms, I didn't even realize that menopause was happening, but paused it has, and shows no sign of returning anytime soon.
Anyhow, I'm going to try your small meals suggestion, probably do a few weeks of Atkins induction... and I've already started working out (Lotte Berk method, Bar method tapes..will add some cardio soon...) I'm actually fairly active, so the fitness part is coming more easily than I expected.
Okay, this is turning into a book... will stop now... |

BETHANY ---
THIS WORKS FOR ITCHING!
Sorry for screaming in capital letters, but I wanted to get your attention. When I had horrible yeast die off last year, I had the same full body "scratch your skin right off" itching you are describing...
Baking soda and water are a Godsend in this regard.. (I learned about this on my Lyme support forum). Make a paste of baking soda with a little water, and cake it on the area that itches. It's messy, but my goodness it helps!
I also have had pretty good success with a product called Candi-Gone, which is an herbal combo to fight yeast.
I hope you are feeling much better! |
