| Smoothskin, you seem to be such an expert on fragrances, could you please help. My absolute favourite fragrance is Paco Rabanne Calandre but I find it very, very hard to get. Do you have a suggestion that would be similar? I was told that Chanel No 5 was similar and I tried that but it was nothing like Calandre. I would really love some suggestions. |

Well I've been wearing Pink Sugar...haha...girly. But I do love Burberry London, Fresh Sake (Pink Jasmine too) and Coco Mademoiselle. However, I'd love to get something way more sophisticated...I love fragrance...I use aromatherapy and change my perfume based on my mood.
I think I might just go for the sample set. The regular fragrances are incredibly expensive (around 109 in USD) but if it has staying power and I fall in love with it, then why not?
I regret never purchasing my most favorite scent. I'd just go into the store and smell it but I let the cost of it stop me from buying it and really enjoying it. Then it was discontinued.
Does anyone know if Serge Lutens samples are available? I hesitate to buy a fragrance without knowing how it develops on me first, but I hear such wonderful things about this line of perfumes. |

ParisTroika - I obtained mine from visiting a department store in Paris in person. The SA chap was very generous and helpful.
I'm not sure of anywhere on-line, apart from eBay. Buying from there might be a little dodgy, though, unless you could find a reputable seller with fresh samples.
Otherwise, why not contact the Shiseido Salon directly and ask if they would send you some sample vials? The website is: http://www.salons-shiseido.com |

Hi bushy, Calandre is a fragrance which belongs to the chypre family where bergamot and oakmoss come together to create a dry, green air. Calandre stands out from the rest of the chypre family due to a characteristic powdery top note. Chanel #5 is far too opulent and rich in contrast. It is a tough one to replace, and luckily it is still available. Try these websites:www.escentual.co.uk
www.fragrancenet.com
However, if you do fancy a bit of a change, I think these fragrances might be sniffworthy for you:
SpaceNK Melodrama - floral chypre
SpaceNK Expression - very light, modern take on chypre. Heavy on the vetiver and balanced with a hint of jasmine and nutmeg.
www.spacenk.com
Diptyque Eau De Lierre - Not a chypre, but green and clean, like a walk along the riverside. Try it! |

Paristroika, which fragrance was it that you never bought that was discontinued?
Cuppre, you should try Antonia's Flowers - it is simply beautiful. |

It was from Tiffany...Trueste (I think that is how it is spelled). Le sigh.
Do the Ormonde Jayne fragrances have good staying power or would I need to invest in one of their body lotions for layering? My Fresh Sake doesn't need to be layered, as it stays really well throughout the day.
Buying both a OJ fragrance and lotion will set me back about $174 US...<wow...have never spent that much on a fragrance> but if I love the fragrance, I'm serious enough to actually work extra hours and wait in order to pay off more of my credit card in order to purchase it.
I'm really leaning towards buying the sample programme from OJ. Fragrance is really important to me...I think that is why I have so many, as I change depending on how I feel. I've actually always wanted to be one of those people that wears a signature scent all the time, like my mum...because her perfume always reminds me of her and when I was little...that's kind of how I'd like to be remembered...silly I know, but it's amazing how scents can take you back and invoke such special memories. |

Oh my gosh their (Ormonde Jayne) shipping is unbelievable.
They charge 17 USD to ship the EDP to the US.
21 dollars for the lotion and EDP.
Maybe I don't want to even try the samples...if I love them, I'm not so sure I can afford 200 dollars for an EDP and lotion...
EDIT: And Serge Lutens does not ship to the US.
I'm so bummed right now... |

I think I may have fallen in love with a new scent. Inspired by Smoothskin's talk of frangipani, I tried Chantecaille's Frangipane in SpaceNK today.
It seems to suit me, but I was wearing some Un Bois Vanille at the time and so will have to return and try the Frangipane again on a perfume-free day to make sure it is as wonderful as it appears to be.
Anyone with any experience of this perfume, by any chance?
I also rather liked Marc Jacob's Ivy - but, again, would like to try on another occasion in case my Un Bois Vanille was drowning it out too much. It seems very fresh, green and had a bit of a sharp tang. |

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Winter White
I bet anyone could find a personal favorite among the creations of Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. Her creativity stretches across all fragrance families and she does everything from the very simple single notes to incredibly complex masterpieces.
I have many favorites from the range and Winter White is one that is breathtakingly beautiful. It has the purity of snow and a childlike innocence coming through the unusal list of notes which are:
Raspberry, Sandalwood, White Rose
Heliotrope, Musk, White Chocolate
If this was a mass produced fragrance, I would worry that it would be too sweet, but Hurwitz blends these notes with her signature soft touch. The oil format also ensures that this fragrance stays close to the skin, like a sweet whisper of all good things about winter. For me it is the pure joy of building castles in snow and eating marzipan while waiting for Santa.

Hi Paristroika, I am sorry to hear about the steep postage rates from OJ, and difficult access to Serge Luten, may I suggest the equally wonderful fragrances by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. She also offers a wonderful sample programme. Let me know if you need any help in choosing fragrances to try, and she is also very helpful if you drop her an e mail.

Hi Majorb, it is wonderful to fall in love with a new fragrance. Frangipane by Chantecaille is probably the one fragrance I recommend most often when women want to wear a fragrance for the man in their life. It really is a man magnet! I think it is a very well balanced vanilla fragrance. |

Smoothskin - Oh, that Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is amazing! There are so many samples I need to order!
I shall be bookmarking all of these suggestions and trying them when I can afford it.
BTW Have you ever tried her "Special Formula"? It sounds very intriguing. |

Well, I decided to go ahead and order the sample programme, since they cover shipping on that one. If I do decide on a scent, I'll figure out what to do at that point. I normally only buy the corresponding lotions in order to layer (meaning I only put it on my wrists, inside elbows, and neck...the places where I spritz my scent) and maintain the scent longer throughout the day. However, if the EDP has good staying power, there won't be a need for it really (I mean I know that a lotion will prolong it, but if I'm satisfied with how long it lasts, no worries). Thus that can save me the cost.
I never thought to ask...does the sample programme contain EDP or the Parfum?
EDIT: I am going to check out that website, thanks majorb! |

Hi Majorb, I have not tried that one, but would love to read a review of it if you order a sample. I think she seems like a very nice lady as well, always responding to e mails promptly and being so helpful.
Hi Paristroika, the samples are of the edp and don't worry about layering. They have great staying power. I can't wait to hear what you think of them! |

OH good! That makes me feel better.
I decided that fragrance is just too important to me to pass up trying something new, expensive or not.
I hope it doesn't take too long to get here!!! |

I'm curious for those of you who ordered the Ormonde Jayne sample set...how long did it take to get to you? I'm just trying to gauge how long it might take.
Did you receive an email or any notification from OJ confirming it? I only have my World Pay receipt.
Thanks for your time! |

So you received a confirmation direct from Ormonde Jayne?
I ordered mine the day after you...I'll give it a few more days then contact them.
I'm just paranoid I'm going to leave on holiday and it will not get here before I leave! Just me being paranoid I'm sure.
thanks for the info. I really appreciate it! |

Your welcome. The confirmation came in the form of a letter, first thanking me for the order, and then there was a paragragh on the proper use of the fragrances. You should, hopefully get something like this. Good Luck! |

Hi Paris - just a little update - I received the perfumes about five minutes ago and the little vials are actually spray bottles, so very easy to use, and enough for about a week in each, at least for me anyway!
It will take me 8 or 9 days to try them all out so will update when I've "graded them all".
I have the frangipani on, but right now... undecided! |
