Yes, I shave every other day and have for almost a year. I read that men seem to age in the lower face a lot less than women because of shaving. Never heard of it before then or I would probably have tried it sooner.
I do not have any facial hair and only minimal vellus hair (peach fuzz). I shave as an extra exfoliation measure. It makes your skin feel just like a baby's.

I am Asian and have WAY too much facial hair. I actually go for threading to get rid of it (I react badly to wax and don't have the money to go for Laser treatments). Sometimes if I'm really pressed for time and haven't had the chance to go for threading, I'll shave it off, but that's rare. |
I think Far East Asians (Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Malays, Vietnamese etc) generally don't have a lot of body/facial hair. West Asians, on the other hand (from the Indian subcontinent - Pakistanis, Indians, Sri Lankans etc) are generally hairy. The salons I know around here that do threading for the face are those owned by and catering for the latter group.
Anyways - I don't shave my face, the idea never appealed to me. but now that I'm reading all this... |

I wax my arms and upper lip, use the noseclip thingy for nasal hair, and tweeze eyebrows & strays (I once found a looong, blonde, fine hair growing from my forehead ) I hate having to wax my mustache...I still have to brace myself before I rip the wax off. Shaving is sounding not so bad now.. |

You know if the truth be known...the thought has crossed my mind. I remember reading somewhere that it would not grow back black & course plus it was good exfoliation for the face. But...I just cannot bring myself to try it! Just in case I fall into that percentage of women who defy the odds and I end up with big time face fuzz. |

I am Chinese actually, so the myth about East Asians not having a lot of facial hair isn't true - it's not just me but I know quite a few others with a lot of facial hair. The big problem is I have black hair (of course) but I'm pretty pale, so any facial hair on me shows up! |

if it's just for exfoliation, why not just use a manual one like epidermx?
i think women age faster than men for a variety of reasons and not just because men exfoliate more through everyday shaving. women apply makeup and that tugs at the skin--I have observed the way many of my girl friends have applied eyeliner and wow--they totally tug at their eyes to achieve a straight line. also, society expects more from women , so a woman is usually viewed as old when she ages while a man is seen as getting more sophisticated as he ages. and maybe childbirth has something to do with it too? |

i believe hair does grow back thicker when shaved, waxed, messed with any other way except electrolysis and maybe laser, at least it does for me. my sister and i are the same "hairiness" when we started out as kids--i shaved my legs and she didn't and now i have dark thick hair on my legs, while hers are light and grey. it's not just the stubble on my legs but it's the actual thickness of each hair. i know science says hair doesn't grow more or thicker, but personal experience tells me otherwise. on the otherhand, my friend who waxes her upper lip says her hairs get fainter each time, and observing her lip, i agree. so i guess it depends on the person... |
You could've gotten a complete set of alleles when it comes to hair growth. Most likely you would've developed thick hair despite shaving or not. |

see, i would think that was the reason, except hair is fine where i haven't messed around with it (mustache--i have never messed around with there). I wish it were true for me that messing with my hair won't make it grow any thicker or faster, but it's not . |

Very interesting!
Isn't there a face treatment (I forget the name of it!) that gently scrapes the face with a small precision blade?
I had it done once, years ago, and am trying to remember what it's called! Seems like the shaving thing would have the same effect!
I'll fess up to shaving my moustache and chin.
I started years ago, after a friend at the beach commented on how my blonde moustache was gleaming in the sunlight!
I went home and threw out my facebleaching stuff and tried using Nair for faces. I must have left it on too long or something, because I ended up with no skin on my poor upper lip, just an oozing mess!
Once it healed, I started shaving. My dazzling golden moustache got dark and course, and now I had an even BIGGER problem!
Tweezing came next. Lots and lots of tweezing, because the dark hairs were visible through the skin, so I had to dig at them. Now I had big, thick, dark hairs and lots of little scabs!
About ten months ago I started going for laser hair removal All the coarse dark hairs are gone, and there are just a few coarse blonde ones left that the laser can't zap, at least not until I start using the meladine lotion that deposits melanin into the blonde follicles so the laser can get 'em! |

I was scared to start shaving my face. Best thing I ever did! I go over my face every morning with a dry razor. Never had such smooth skin. Linder |

Linder and those of you who shave as a beauty measure rather than a depilation, do you also shave your forehead?
your neck?
your decolletage - or is that area too sensitive?
What do you use as a lubricant?
I use clarisonic daily, so I imagine I'm getting enough exfoliation.. what do you think? Does the one cancel out the need for the other? |

I shave my face only for the exfoliation benefits...NOT to remove hair. When I was much younger I had electrolysis to remove some darkish hairs around my moustache area, and now I don't really have any hair on my face to deal with. When I used to go to my dermatologists office, he had newspaper articles on this subject posted on his walls and I was completely horrified. All of the women who worked in his office had BEAUTIFUL skin, young and old, and I used to give them the third degree about their shaving..."do you get a beard?" "do you do it every day?"..."do you lather up with shaving creme?" etc. I absolutely thought it was insane just as most of you do right now! It was years before I broke down and tried it. I was always aware that older men had beautiful skin, compared to their equivalently aged wives, and knew that shaving played a part (as well as testosterone.) Men who wear beards their whole lives, rarely have skin as nice as their shaved counterparts. I think it is a best kept beauty secret, but still too taboo to bring out in the open...but thought it was a worthy discussion. I believe in shaving any area exposed to the sun. I shave my forehead, crows feet area, cheeks, upper lip and chin (and sometime lips too)--but no, I don't shave my nose!! I also shave my arms, which are so soft and silky, inspite of the 20 years I lived as a tanorexic. I did try shaving my upper chest area, since I get splotchy sun damage there, but the skin was too sensitive. I shave every day or two, but my derm said 3 times a week is sufficient. I am all about doing absolutely everything possible to save my skin and so far it's working. Women very frequently ask me what I do for my skin, since it looks unbelievably good for my age (54.) I am not suggesting here, that anyone with a hairy face, do this. If you don't have a facial hair problem, I think it is one of the most important skin care practices you could do.
I have 5 girlfriends that are doing now, (thanks to me) and LOVE IT~! |

I have shaved my face about 4 times in my lifetime. It definitely is nice and smooth after and makeup goes on great. I have blonde peach fuzz that you can see when in the sun. It is along my jaw line up to side burns area. Also have a few blonde hairs at the corners of my mouth (which I tweeze). Like everyone mentioned here, I am afraid to get into the habit of shaving my face for fear that the hair will become dark and coarse. So, I just stick with the peach fuzz. |

I've tried it, liked it, but I "need" to find a razor that is really tiny, I have seen them before but now can only find the tiny ones that have a strange blade, and it doesn't work for the face.
I find it's too awkward to use a regular sized razor, I guess my face is smaller compared to others.
The only thing I noticed about the hairs is (and this is just because I have a magnifying mirror that is 10X!!! it really shows up every PORE and hair, and I think I got it at Walmart, just a little round one that has little suction cup things) the hairs grew back in crazy directions after shaving for a few times - instead of growing back in a smooth downward direction, now the hairs look like they've grown back in all kinds of crazy directions. But they did NOT grow back in darker or thicker or coarser.
It is supposed to REALLY help with preventing clogged pores and keeping skin clear. Ive only tried it a few times though so far until I get a small razor. |

Mountaingirl - I'm totally intrigued! Can you give more info re: how the benefits of shaving compare to, lets say, home glycolic peels or other at-home exfoliation methods? What other methods of exfoliation have you used in the past and how do they compare to the results you get from shaving?
Thanks again,

Biomedic!
I just remembered! If you google biomedic dermaplaning, it describes the facial treatment which uses a blade, like a small scalpel, to exfoliate!
I don't think dermaplaning is unique to Biomedic, I believe they just popularized it somewhat! |

maiea i do believe it has something to do with your diets. if you go to asia countries such as japan, china and korea, you will see those people have less facial hair than those asians grew up in western countries. |

I just shave above my lip, sides of my face and under my chin. I just use my PINK BIC once every morning on a dry face. Never have gotten a rash or stubble. I was so tired of hair removal creams burning and epi lady pulling the hair out. Like I said I just started and it was the best decision I ever made. My Aunt is 83 years old and has always shaved her face. You should see her! She looks in her 60's. Linder |

I forgot to mention that I dry shave. I take a regular razor and shave above my lip, the sides of my face where the massive amounts of peach fuzz are,my chin and between my brows. My peach fuzz always grows back the same as before I shaved. I've been shaving for a few years now. I do it about once or twice a week. It only takes one minute because I just lighty run a dry razor over my skin. Like I said before, my makeup goes on much more flawless without the hair there. As I age I do have one or two coarser hairs on my chin that I pluck but those hairs did not become coarser because I shave. It's an age thing. |

Good point to bring up. The exfoliation benefits are from 'dry shaving'. So put your SO's shaving cream back ladies, lol.

Asian also, but I don't think I could ever shave my face. If all the hairs grow back at the same time wouldn't your face be rough? which means you have to almost shave every 2 days or so or even daily. Would hate to have a 5 o'clock shadow on my whole face
I have darker peach fuzz if you will, but very little of it on my face, but am afraid it'll grow back more and I don't know if I can shave my face every other day. If I try it once do I have to keep doing it? I'm afraid if I start, I've started a cycle and can't stop then. Maybe I'll try a patch somewhere. |

The idea that if you shave the hair will grow back thicker and darker was de-bunked about 10 yrs. ago by the University of California. They did a long term study with about 200 woman back in the early 90's that dis-proved that theory. They said that hair growth excelerates with age, but did not excelerate with shaving, on the face or anywhere else.
My niece has been shaving her upper lip for about 7 years, and it's no thicker now than when she started! |
