Too bad alcohol dehydrates you even more although it does makes me sleep easier on the plan. If you do drink just remember to drink more water after.

It definitely does, but not as much as black tea or coffee.

Very Happy I'll have to remember to ask for that glass of wine this time and plenty of water to go with that, into my water bottle. Thanks for the great tips ladies!

Well I know some brands do a decaf green tea, though I'm not sure what the process is to remove the caffeine... but I myself drink the decaf stuff so I don't toss and turn (and have to get up to pee!) all night!

YY - the suggestion of using Jojoba oil is a good one (by ginnieliz)as it will protect your skin and doesn't cause breakouts.
Other than that you could try using a salve - pretty heavy, but protective.
Drink plenty of water - I know it's a pain going to the toilet all the time, but it's better than dried out skin. Good luck!

The drinking water thing will actually help with not getting sick, too. When the inside of your nose and the back of your throat get dried out from the recirculated, zero-humidity air, all the germies being breathed around can better attack you. I actually grease up the inside of my nose with lip balm or just oil (nothing scented) and it helps keep that tissue moist during flights. Weird but effective! For the throat, though, you just gotta drink. Just think that the getting up for the loo will be good at getting your blood recirculating, so you don't have fat ankles when you deboard. Smile

See if you can get something to take or put on that will keep your ankles from swelling.

I use my makeup case for a foot stool.

Thanks so much for all the info and tips!

I will def decant some jojoba oil...dont wanna be dry and breakout

Virginia---do you just apply the balm/oil on the outside of the nose or inside as well? And is jojoba oil ok for that (saves me taking another oil)? And does it look weird, you know, like a grease filled nose Embarassed ?

Chinachatters- I wear those flight socks to prevent blood clot. But the makeup case as a foot stool is a good idea, but I dont have a makeup case cos i wont be wearing makeup. And you can only take one piece of hand luggage on board.

By the way, has any of you heard that wating cherries and walnuts help as well? I remember reading a short article last year that it helps make the body less tired and ache.

Heh, I've never had a problem with inner nose balm stuff looking weird - I use something like a balm that has higher wax content, like a lip balm or like the consistency of Burt's Bees cuticle butter - that way, it has more staying power, can't drip, and is less shiny. All-around less noticeable. But I'm sure jojoba oil would work - we're talking about really high up in the nostrils (gross, I know, but effective, and lots of gals do this for seasonal allergies or dry nasal passages!) so it's not like it'd be visible. Smile

Good luck, hope this helps!

Thanks for clarifying that...it does sound a bit gross lining the nose with waxes and oils. But it does make sense that all the bacteria doesnt get through the nostrils. Gonna give that a try!

I've been flying loads of late and i haven't come across the 5 bottle rule. I know the ziplock (i use a PVC one) can be up to one cubic litre in capacity and the max. size of an individual bottle is 100ml. Yes, it is a pain especially when i travel so much........But saying that as long as you keep within the basic guidelines they won't confiscate anything, though i can't speak for the US customs cause i'm mostly in Asia and Europe!!!

I have a flight to London in less than 24hrs and i haven't even started to pack yet-man!!!!!

yes, drinking tons and tons of water before, during, and after. it IS a pain to keep running to the bathroom (I always request an aisle seat) BUT you get to stretch your feet and neck that way ANYWAYS. Also, instead of spritzing mineral water or a hydrosol periodically, which can paradoxically DRY out your skin if you aren't already emollient enough--using a paper towel in the bathroom to compress liquid into the skin (holding a saturated towel or washcloth onto areas for like 3-5 minutes at a time) works to REALLY hydrate the skin. then you can follow with some EOS mixed with your fave moisturizer. i always have skinceuticals' eye balm (VERY HYDRATING!) and osea's hydrating oil (also VERY CALMING!) with me on flights, in addition to a little vial of rosewater mixed with white peony tea.

AND I find some good earplugs to be indispensable!

Hi one of my friend just uses two stuffs to keep her skin hydrated during the flight.

Decelor cleasing milk as a cleanser
Dr Ci Labo super moisture aqua collagen gel as mask and cream.

But I am too lazy to use anything even in a 12h flight. The flight restriction bothers me so much.

As the topic title suggests, can you share your tips for long haul flights. My skin gets really dry and dehydrated and breaks out on the plane! And with the restrictions of how much liquid you can take on board, I will have to look for samples and decant my products.

My tip for long haul flights are to moisturise the whole body and face before leaving for the airport (I tend not to wear ANY makeup), take some herbal tea bags for when you're on board.

What products do you take on board?

Im thinking of taking- moisturiser, sunscreen, moisturising mask to leave on, eye cream, gentle cleanser, maybe decant the rosewater so I can sprintz my face whenever I need to. And Im not sure whether to take concealer Rolling Eyes

Hi

I travel internationally a lot so I've got it down to a fine art, Smile You really need to take the minimum amount possible, I personally don't think you will need sunscreen, a mask, eye cream etc. What I do is, remove all my makeup with a facial wipe, moisturise, I use the little samples of Decleor moisturiser and then use a lip balm. Don't use a spritz, they actually dehydrate your skin more than help it. Make sure you drink lots and lots of water, even if you don't want it, drink it, it will stop you getting a dehydration headache for a start. I also have a blow up pillow and noise cancelling headphones which don't drown out all the air noise but they certainly make it easier to hear the onboard movies.

Wear loose fitting clothes and comfy shoes, don't remove your shoes as your feet could swell, especially if it's a night flight and then you could have problems getting your shoes back on. I fly Business/Premium so take advantage of the 'free' glass of Champagne but drinking alcohol gets your drunk at altitude and dehydrated so if you can, steer clear of the booze.

As to the restrictions, it does vary slightly from where you're flying from and to, so check out the airlines website. Generally you can't take any liquid (that includes bottled water, so buy that once you've got through security) greater than 100ml and whatever you do have has to fit into a small ziplock bag, generally around 8" square. If your flight amenity kit does not have a toothbrush/paste, definitely take a small one so you can freshen up at the end of the flight.

As for sleeping, I can never sleep and I did take travel sickness pills once, only because they were supposed to make me drowsy so I thought I could have a decent sleep, it worked well too, I slept for hours, BUT it was really hard to wake up again and that's not good if you have to drive the other end!

Hope that helps. Smile

Thanks for sharing your greate travel tips Sarah. Only one thing I don't quite agree - the sunscreen. As you are flying thousands of miles closer to the sun, you do need SS to protect yourself. Especially sometimes when it's hard to persuade your fellow passenger to close the blinds.

I'm only taking sunscreen so I can use it when I'm off the plane cos the trip home will take a while and I know for sure that its going to be really hot and sunny there.
But thats a good point iaimei Smile

in addition to airplane skincare & yoga pants, i also always make sure that i drink lots of water with vit. c fizzy packets (i use emergen-c) as airplane air seems to deplete everything, including vit. c.

i also like to add cell food, an oxygen supplement that i add to my water between the vit. c packets.

When ever i fly i always make sure i take my pashmina and a pair of soft socks to keep me warm as i find planes tend to be chilly.
I also take some face wipes and a small spritzer bottle of toner to freshen up my face and some moisturiser. I also take a small bottle of sunscreen to protect myself when i get off the flight. I take my portable toothbrush and toothpaste to keep my mouth fresh and some lip balm to stop my lips from drying out.

I also drink lots and lots of water. I like the idea of adding vitamins and oxygen supplements to my water. Ill definatly look into that before i go on holiday next

This is a completely non-glamorous tip, but I always wear compression socks whilst flying. They help your circulation, prevent swelling of ankles and, most importantly, can help to prevent DVT. (If you are prone to DVT, your doctor may give you anticoagulant injections to take with you to administer before and after the flight. They can be injected straight into the stomach and don't hurt - just a little burning afterwards in the area).

Also, don't forget leg exercises to keep your circulation moving. You can do these in your seat. Rotate your feet in circular movement so your ankles get plenty of flexion. I do a kind of treadling motion with my legs too - alternately pressing each one up onto the balls of the feet to get the leg veins pumping.

Screw airborne glamour, haha, I just don't want varicose veins! Thanks for that tip, majorb. I've heard that one should wear those before but I've never bothered - I think my upcoming trip to England will be a good time to start, especially since we'll have a layover in Toronto so our total travel time is much longer than normal. That's what we get for going for the cheap flights. Great idea!

I have been to HongKong a couple times, last time was last year. I think you can get Valmont at really good prices in HK.
I loving using sheet masks so I bought quite a few from Watsons.
