Tigerlily, I hear ya on this one. I'm 25 and I agree that acne is sooo annoying when you're trying to prevent wrinkles too!
The only thing that helped with my hormonal acne was Retin-A, though you need to stick with it for months and months. Retin-A however, did not make my skin look any younger though it did control the acne (I think I looked older cuz of the dryness even when I stopped flaking). Lactic, glycolics or Benzoyl Peroxide did not help with hormonal acne at all because the hormonal acne tends to be deep inside the skin and will not surface (believe me, I've tried everything!!) Retin-A will take care of deep acne.
I now use (and highly recommend) Medicalia L-Retinol cream (at night) and Medicalia Retinol and C cream in the daytime. It has replaced retin-A for me, and has done wonders, smoothened out my complexion, evened it out, made it glow, moisturises it all day long and prevented more breakouts! But I would only switch after the acne is under control. I definitely look younger. Mind you, my skin reacts to anything and hates rich things as I just break out from them. I've tried soooo many products and I can't believe it took me this long to discover this line. There isn't much on the internet about Medicalia (as I've tried searching) but I got some testers from my facialist to try out first.
Above all that, a good diet does wonders for the skin, though the results are sooo gradual, fish is especially great for the skin, there is no instant gratification for a good diet but I tell ya, stick with a healthy one with plenty of fish, fruits and veggies for just 1 month (and get enough sleep) I think you'll see an improvement (I certainly did, including thicker and healthier hair!). Having said that diet is important, I think hormonal acne still needs some skincare help, but a good diet speeds up healing and improves the overall condition of your skin and helps you look younger. My mom who is 50, looks like she's in her 30's because she eats soooo healthily and exercises daily! She's got thin, sensitive skin too, but looks really young anyway. She does use some skincare though, but nothing fancy or expensive at all. I don't think its genes, cuz everyone else in the family looks their age or older, except for my mom. Good example of how nurture can affect your age!
All the best with your journey! I hope to see posts from you in future, raving about how young you look for your age!! |

Oh I forgot to ask. How is your nettle tea? What brand do you use. I have Traditional Medicinals "organic nettle tea". It's not exactly a taste sensation but i'll down a cuppa right now while I read the forum.
p.s. it says to steep for 10 minutes! Now that's a strong tea! |
Well, I was taking Nettle Root which was in a capsule, not the tea. About a week and a half into it I developed a really sharp intermitent pain in what I think was my left ovary. So I haven't taken any more since then! |

really? I didn't know that could happen with a natural antiseptic/antibacterial. I think that's what it is. |

Hi Callalily, I was just about to post how things were going for me.
Ok, so here's what I've been doing since I originally posted that first message:
AM
1. Started using Clarisonic Pro for 2 minutes on 2nd setting with sensitive brush with Burt's Bees Baby Bee Shampoo and Body Wash. Believe it or not, this has worked better for me than all the other "organic" cleansers I've tried. I've come to the conclusion that it's a little too drying for me, though. I'll look for something else when I have the time and money.
2. Use witch hazel as a toner. I've tried toners off and on, but didn't really know what they were doing or if they were working, so they weren't really a part of my routine. I read reviews on the Clarisonic and a lot of people said to use a toner if you had any acne so it wouldn't spread.
3. Mix a little jojoba oil with a drop of lavendar oil in my palm. Gently spread this on my face. 3 years ago I did a lot of reading on Acne.org which is what got me started on the BP. Anyway, someone said jojoba oil closely resembles sebum, so your face won't produce as much. I bought some and never really followed through with it (surprise, suprrise ) Anyway, lavendar is antibacterial and antiviral and also fades red marks.
4. Sometimes add a little Clarity Lotion from Evan's Garden. I just started to use this sporadically before I found out about this forum. I think I went through a brief purging with this lotion, but at the time I didn't understand that's what it was. I'm still using it occasionally, because I really am not sure. I love the tooth powder I got from her though. It's awesome!
PM
Same thing as AM.
Ok, so I just checked the mail and my Buzz on Acne is here. I'm wondering if I should use it or not since what I'm doing seems to be working and it's soooooo inexpensive.
How's the nettle tea working for you? |

Ok, so I couldn't resist and squirted a little Buzz on Acne on my face and it smells vaguely like...bleach I'm sure it's not, well, ok I'm not really sure...
Anyway, I'll let you know what's happening with that in the next few weeks. I'm hoping to smooth out my face and get the "glow" that I keep reading about. |

Do you see any results from your regime? Would you be opposed to using any "non-natural" products? Maybe a nice glycolic product could smooth you out. I like to eat organic and natural foods but sometimes with my skin I just can't find natural products that suit my needs. I think they can have irritating additives.
I highly suggest you go get yourself some Thermal water spray from Vichy. It's mineral water, I think it'll be better than witch hazel and it feels soooo good.
when I am successful I:
cleanse (rinse 15 times!!!)
spray thermal water
use a new towel (or paper towel) to gently dry my face
add a serum at night (moisturizzzeee)
Alpha Beta Peels (i purge a lot sometimes on these but they smooth you out eventually and help fade marks)
I should look into that Buzz on acne stuff. It just sounds so gimicky (the name probably) I kind of roll my eyes.
p.s. I think BP is kind of nasty. Dries me out like 'Fo.
Good luck with your skin and your little baby. |

It could be your inside problem, try to drink more water and eat less sweet and deep fried food. Eating more vegetables helps too.
And don't use oily and thick foundation and sunblock. |

I've been researching alternative health (herbs, supplements, cleansing) for about 4 years now I guess. One of my biggest problems is lack of patience. I think I might have had this thing licked by now if I would have stuck with some of the things I've tried for more than a week or two...
I love to learn and read and am always excited to try new remedies. I need to cool it I think. This Buzz on Acne product sounds great and seems to produce results rather quickly. The only thing I'm kind of concerned about is the silver in the product. I saw this guy on the news that turned blue from using colloidal silver internally and externally for years. Anyway, I'm willing to use it in the short term for immediate results while the Herpanacine is working internally. Maybe I can quit the Buzz on Acne when the Herpanacine has done it's thing. |
Hi tigerlily,
I agree with the others- ditch the BP. You might want to visit Garden Of Wisdom (gardenofwisdom.com) and check out their finished products. They're some of the purist I've found and I am big on using pure stuff. I also supplement the products I use with melissa hydrosol which you can order from there too. I particularly suggest trying one of the HA serums, the GoW Majik Anti-PopUp Blemish Gel (works really well), and GoW Eye Majik Cream (great eye cream!!). I currently am using the above plus their GoW CocoFen Soothing/Clarifying Tonic, Immortelle HA Serum, GoW Super Charged B-5 Anti-Oxidant Gel, GoW Exclusive BLT-RC Serum, and Manuka HA serum. For cleansing I alternate between their GoW 'Skin Friendly' Cleanser, GoW Fruity Exfo Cleanser 5% and Naturderm's Triple Lavender Face Foam. I also do a glacial clay mask 2-3 times per week, an aspirin and raw honey mask 2 times per week, and use the GoW Perfekt Pumpken Serum once a week (my skin will only tolerate it if I dampen my skin, apply this, and then rinse it off 1 minute later. It really help with the my skin peelies.) Eventually I plan to integrate a salicylic acid serum into my regime. I also plan to make my own SA-raw honey mask with salicylic powder instead of aspirin.
You also might be interested in trying Mandelic Acid as an acne and antiaging treatment. I starting using GoW's Mandelic acid serum and am seeing results. (Read about it here: http://www.gardenofwisdom.com/mandelic.html ) I also use Tazorac but can only tolerate it every other night. My hope is to eliminate it altogether some day.
I also wanted to mention that the OCM didn't work for me- it made my skin worse! But it's different for everyone.
Anyway, best of luck in finding products that work well for you! |

2 months ago using Benzoyl Peroxide wash 5% in the morning and Tazorac .1 at night. My face is drastically improved, the acne is almost gone, and my pores cleared up. My skin adjusted to both within few weeks. The only side effect I have is a very, very, oil skin.
I am reading that I should stop using it because it is ages skin. is it true? I've not had such success with anything I've used so far.
P.S. I am 35 with oily and acne prone skin. |

Hi Tigerlily,
I totally identify with your story as I have been battling acne for years (I'm 31) and found that years of using harsh anti-acne skincare left my face looking like alligator skin. Last year I stopped using all acids and went 100% natural in my skincare and after a few weeks my skin was really improving amd looking young again. However after stopping antibiotics at the same time after a few months my acne came back and so I had very teenage looking skin but not in a good way.
I think that you need to establish what is causing your acne. At your age if you are being diligent with your skincare then it is likely that your skin is producing too much oil. This is normally caused by a hormonal imbalance or sensitivity to DHT a harmful form of testosterone which has a direct effect on the sebaceous glands. You don't have to have too much testosterone as often in women a sensitivity to this hormone is enough to trigger high oil production and cause acne, blocked pores and a bumpy uneven skin texture.
I think you are on to something with the Nettle Root as it has anti-androgen properties so should help to block the conversion of testosterone to DHT. I have been seeing a herbalist about this and I am on Saw Palmetto as well as other herbal tintures and teas. Peppermint and /or Liquorice tea are also good anti-androgens and taste good to.
It might be an idea to see a herbalist or an Ayurvedic doctor to see what they suggest. Also I have found that lifestyle choices are importnat too like getting plenty of sleep and eating a low GI wholefood diet but sometimes perfect skin is not a big enough reward for living like a saint!
As for skin care I have really found all natural, organic skincare to be the best I use Dr Hauschka and Neals Yard mostly although I have added in Avene's Retrinal as an anti-aging insurance recently and am seeing better results than with the prescription Retin-A I was using previously.
It's a bit of a long hard slog changing the way you deal with your skin and at times I have been tempted to go back to the harsh products that did provide temporary relief. I know now that in order to get the skin I really want I need to change my habits and diet also as when I did this my skin did get better.
Anyway I'm not sure what you will do but this seems to be working for me but it's not a quick fix at all.
Whatever you do Good luck!
P.S. I really recommend a book called The Truth About Beauty by Kat James maybe you can get it in the library? |

Try a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser with salicylic acid for acne control. You might want to check out product reviews at https://www.pissedconsumer.com/direct-digital/RT-F.html to find options that really work. Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer with soothing ingredients like niacinamide or aloe. For eye cream, choose one with peptides or hyaluronic acid for hydration and anti-aging. Avoid over-exfoliating with the Clarisonic to prevent irritation. |
