I am looking for a good quality Omega 3 fish oil.
It seems my cholesterol is a little high (230) I started taking Red Rice Yeast today. I thought I was eating healthy but I guess I need a little extra!
Any good recipes I can use would be helpful also. Thanks |
I also was looking for a good quality Omega 3 fish oil. Not for any specific reason but thought it was a good idea since I limit my fish eating with the concern over mercury.
Anyway, I chose Wild Alaska Salmon Oil, 1000mg, soft gels. Info I found was that it was the least contaminated. I took it for a few days, then stopped. I figured I shouldn't take any supplements unless I had a blood test to determine if in fact I had an Omega 3 deficiency. Never did that, though. Just wanted to share....
hate to throw media reference into the discussion above
but found this today and thought it interesting:

Yes, the media is finally admitting that fish oil is a crock. But that doesn't help people figure out what to do since they don't truly understand the effects of PUFA. People need to reduce ALL sources of polyunsaturates, not use omega-3s to balance the omega 6s in vegetable oils. To begin to block the effects of past consumption of PUFA you need to increase your intake of good saturated fats like coconut oil, which will boost your thyroid and possibly begin to lower your cholesterol.
Coconut oil raises good cholesterol and lowers HDL/LDL ratio:

This is slighly OT but Brooke Burns just got diagnosed with thyroid cancer. I read she is on the Meditteranean diet which happens to be very high in PUFAs....

1. Sorry, Gretchen, I'm confused about one of your comments.
Even AFTER my re-reading of the Wall Street Journal article I posted as an interesting informative link, I do NOT think "the media " concluded that <fish oil was a crock> (as you stated)
I believe the author of that WSJ article presented a well-rounded, balanced overview on Omega-3 consumption. E.G.:
"... Recent research offers a tantalizing mix of healing possibilities:..."
2. Despite your passionate reference to coconut oil, I, personally, would not clog up my arteries with coconut oil.
(And I wouldn't care who said what and where it was said.)
And, hey, isn't it great to have a forum like this one that offers a variety of opinions....? |

I personally will NOT take too much of coconut oil either as (in my opinion), it is fattening if consume in large amount. Even extra Olive oil that I use in fresh salads every day, I consume just little to garnish my salads. Will not eat too much either. I think in everything, it should always be in moderation.

Coconut oil is a very positive fat. It takes 'fat' to burn fat - your body uses it differently than other fat sources. I put it in smoothies.
The coconut is a great provider of health benefits: fiber and nutritional content, but the oil is what makes it stand out, despite the fact that its high saturated fat content was once falsely claimed to be unhealthy.
Coconut, being a medium-chain fatty acid is unique in that it has the ability to burn fat... Here's more.
Weight loss - Medium-chain fatty acids found in coconut oil can speed up metabolism faster than long-chain fatty acids because they are easily digested and converted into energy. In fact, a study reported medium-chain fatty acids to be three times more effective in raising metabolism than long-chain fatty acids, leading researchers to conclude that effective weight loss can be achieved by replacing long-chain fatty acids with medium- chain fatty acids. I don't doubt this is a juried source but I teach Nutrition and coconut is a favorite topic of health - and surprises many people. Also great on the hair as a conditioning product |

Hello sister sweets I did not say it is a bad fat, just that I consume coconut oil in moderation, just like how I use extra virgin Olive oil. And yes, coconut oil is good for hair. I put it on my hair when I go to the sauna, just like a hot-oil treatment.

(unintentional OT)
Thankx for reminding me that coconut oil is considered to consist primarily of medium chain Triglycerides.
I'm not a naturopathic expert. But, for me, until all the science proves that coconut oil is truly benign and a good saturated fat, I'm not making any health decision changes.
I still avoid the consumption of coconut oil.
(If my mindset was different, the HUGE jar of Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil that someone gave me to add drops to a hand lotion I use...that still sits endlessly in my fridge despite my regularly mixing drops into the lotion...would sure go ALOT faster. LOL) |

Make that two of us. I'm struggling to keep my cholesterol in check. It went UP when I started using coconut oil. It's back down now through the help of pantethine and I really want to keep it that way as I prefer not to go on meds. |

High cholesterol is the result of mid life hormonal imbalances and likely is the result of having low thyroid. Omega 3s will only further damage your thyroid due to being a source of PUFA which is potently anti-thryoid. Omega-3 has nothing whatsoever to do with lowering cholesterol, this is a myth.
For more understanding of PUFAs, read this blog post:
http://blog.arkofwellness.com/what-is-pufa/
Be careful and read your labels! Another thing to avoid as much as possible is fish oil and omega 3 fats. Avoid cod liver oil and fish oil supplements completely. I will discuss the details of fish oils in a future blog since this is enough to start with. |
