Glittergal,
I use the natural factors ascorbic acid. I had the pharmacist phone the manufacturer while I waited and they said it was L-ascorbic.
I dissolve mine in distilled water, then I add a bit of propylene glycol and a bit of hyaluronic acid. It usually lasts me about a week and then I make a new batch so it doesn't matter if it degrades or not because I use it up so quick. Very easy and so cheap. Just remember to keep it in the fridge.

Hey Dianne... how long does it take for your crystals to dissolve into the solution (I'm using Carekate's version)? It's been a few hours and I still have a layer of vit c crystals at the bottom of my jar... (i'm also using natural factors vit c crystals)

It can sometimes take quite awhile. I usually let it sit for awhile, then I put it in a bottle and shake it for a few minutes. That will usually do. I have been told by several sources that it is ok to heat it briefly by placing in a hot water bath for a few seconds which will dissolve it quite quickly. But then I've also heard that even the slightly amount of heat will degrade it....so I just shake it now.

I previously purchased two different Vitamin C serums ... one for all over my face and one specifically for the eye area.

Now ... both are made by different companies ... both "Health Food Store" types ... and both are in clear, frosted bottles.

What's up with that? I mean ... if mere light degrades Vitamin C ... then how active were these serums by the time I purchased them?

Granted they both have "Vitamin C Ester" ... and both "serums" were dense creams ... but would that make a difference? I mean ... does the density of the "solution" [ie white or yellow cream] ... help guard the Vitamin C content?

I must say that I really do think I've already received more benefit from Carekate's Vitamin C serum recipe than I did from either of the "store-bought" ones.

Thanks Diane, yay! That's awesome that you asked the pharmacist to make sure, way to go. Ok, so if you say that it lasts you a week do you still use 5 mL each of the distilled water and propylene glycol and 1/4 teaspoon of crystals like Carekate? Just curious if you had halved or whatnot the recipie. Thanks

Can't remember Carekate's recipe without searching but what I use is 11/2 teaspoons of water, 1/3 teaspoon of ascorbic acid and about 1/4 teaspoon each of the PG and HA, maybe a bit more. That gives me about a 12% solution, although sometimes I heap the teasp of AA so it might be a bit stronger than that. I use it daily and by the end of the week it's gone so it works out well and I know it's fresh and active. I did originally try it using glycerine but hated it. It seemed to sit on my face for hours and felt really sticky. I like the PG and HA much better.
