Absolutely agree!! Just don't shave your face unless it is really necessary...!! |
Don't shave your face if:
(1) You are hairy.
Do shave your face if:
(1) You want to have beautiful skin when you're an old lady or man! |

Absolutely, yet it's stuck in so many peoples heads!
You don't get thicker, darker, or more hair by shaving!!!!! |
I love those old wives tales.
-there are so many people still beleive, it is quite funny.
Going out when it is cold makes you get a cold.
Sitting on a cold rock will give you health problems?
Cutting you hair will make it grow faster?
-I wish, then I would actually have long hair. |

mountaingirl,
Some people get this stuff stuck in their head! Cutting your dead ends off from your head hair only helps it grow healthy, if it's never trimmed your hair splits and split ends will break! Your hair and nails grow faster in the spring/summer months than in the fall/winter, but cutting doesn't make hair grow faster.
Shaving doesn't change the diameter or color of a hair! The "stubble" on legs only looks that way because it's blunt when growing out! |

EXACTLY DkMn!! It isn't new hair...it's just what you had, with the fine end of the hair "off." |

Basic trichology(study of hair) I learned years ago studying cosmetology, I think many mothers and grandmothers passed on the "old wives tales" and they do seem to stick with people! |

Well if you do believe that it's kind of bizarre that you keep saying stuff like this:
"Don't shave your face if:
(1) You are hairy."
Thing is, I'm probably not that much hairier than the average woman. But I have very light skin and black hair so anything that I do have is super visible. There's no "stubble" because women's facial hair is super thin and soft, no matter what color it is. When you're thinking of women who have "hairy" faces you're actually probably thinking about women who have light skin and dark hair. |

Some people are genetically or even hormonally predisposed to have more or less facial hair! I have met men that can't grow beards and woman with very hairy faces no matter if very dark haired or very light haired.
Woman after menopause are more inclined to sprout dark hairs on the chin and upper lip. I also have a friend 74 who is post menopause and has no hair on her legs, but has those few wild hairs sprout up on her face. Some women even either have thinning of pubic hair after or total loss there! |

Right, there's plenty of natural variation. But light facial hair is pretty easy to ignore, probably women who have light facial hair often do nothing about it. I just don't understand why anyone would say not to shave your face if you're hairy. Shaving is a total godsend for those of us who are on the hairier end of the spectrum.
I get the thing that this affects more women at certain ages, and suddenly it's a crisis for women who have never had to think about this before. I've had women (in person, at work) confide to me that when I'm their age I'll suddenly be sprouting facial hair and I really wanted to say that I already shave it all off but I didn't feel brave enough to talk about that irl, especially at work.
It was actually pretty funny, because they mistook the look on my face for disbelief and they all joined in to tell me that yes it really will happen. |

OK, Let us get this straight before I head for bed, busy day tomorrow!
I didn't say don't shave if you are hairy (I would prepare to do so frequently if you are).
Some women do have thicker facial hair than others, I think this may be where there is a bit of disagreement, I have given enough facials and waxings personally to know this is a fact!
I am not hairy facialy at almost 57 I have those evil hairs that sprout in a few places, I do pluck those to prevent regrowth as quickly
I unfortunately being post menopausal didn't kill off my leg hair, bummer!
I was only making the point initially that cutting or shaving a hair doesn't make it grow faster, thicker or darker!
Are we all good here? |

And I say DON'T SHAVE YOUR FACE IF YOUR HAIRY, because it freaks women out when they feel that blunt tip and they immediately tend to think that they are growing more hair. Too avoid that I recommend ridding yourself of some of that darker, courser hair first. When I say "if you're hairy" I'm talking about darker hair on the face, not necessarily fine, light peach fuzz. |

Exactly why the ones I refer to as evil are the few I pluck out, pulling the root. Those are thicker and darker thanks to hormonal changes! Thankfully they are few and far between for me!
I did also agree if you are hairy and shave expect to do so regularly (pretty much daily) so you don't have that stubble! |

I have shaved my face maybe 8 times in my lifetime for a special occasion and when I want to have my foundation lay smoothly on my face. I am blonde and I have a slight blonde fuzz around my jawline and chin.
But, I wasn't so sure what the long-term effects would be if I continued doing it on a regular bases (yes, the myth about growing in darker and thicker), so I stopped.
I now use a cream product that you put on your face for 2 1/2 minutes and then wipe off. It is called Avon Skin So Soft Fresh & Smooth Facial Hair Removal Cream "Sensitive formula." I have used it 3 times so far. The first time I used though, I left it on for 8 minutes thinking it will do a better job of taking any stubborn hair off. But found out that 2 1/2 minutes is long enough. When I left it on the 8 minutes, I deveoped pink and very dry skin the days following (maybe a chemical burn type of thing?). So, I learned there is a reason why they put instructions on the packaging. LOL! |

MystyPines,
I have never been irritated by cream depilatories and left them on way over the time suggested, what happens for me is they make the hair thinner but still there not what I want.
The reason for shaving isn't really just about getting peach fuzz off, it exfoliates the skin daily. Many women shave for that reason alone.
Maybe hearing from a doctor at the Mayo Clinic can dispel the "Old Wives Tale".

Question
Does shaving make hair grow back thicker?
Is it true that shaving unwanted body hair makes it grow back thicker and darker?
Answer
from Lawrence E. Gibson, M.D.
No. Shaving hair doesn't change its thickness or color. The color, location, thickness and length of hair on your body mainly depend on genetics and hormones. After you shave body hair, it may feel coarse or "stubbly" for a time as it grows out. During this phase, it may be more noticeable and may appear darker or thicker. But it's not.
See your doctor if you have a sudden increase in facial or body hair. Some medical conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome and Cushing's disease, can result in increased hair growth. Also, medications can cause changes in hair growth, including:

Ok, I started this several weeks ago, do I look better who knows? If someone told me to stand naked in the street at midnight and a lip-line would disappear I would be there at 5 to 12. I passed the info along to a few skincare buddies in work and today one of the ladies told me she has been doing this and loving it. She also told me she was talking to one of the estheticians at her PS office who is going to do a skin peel on her, the esth.. told her that first she would shave her face to prepare her skin for the peel. I never heard of doing that prep before. I must say that her skin looks good, much smoother and her makeup looks more blended, now remember she has not had the peel yet, this is just her little disposable razor . She said the application is much smoother since she started shaving. The other person we were talking to is going to try it also. Seriously, makes my face as smooth as silk. |

Thanks, rmc7. Ok. Stupid question here, but do you notice any stubble doing this? (And, could you share how you exfoliate daily?) I have a lot of peach fuzz on my face after using the GHK, but the area above my upper lip is becoming very noticeable and I have really been contemplating shaving, but I am very nervous! |

I shave my peach fuzz off with a men's' Remington battery shaver - maybe once a week or thereabouts. I've got addicted to having a fuzz free face. I do notice some "stubble" when it starts to grow back, but it's not like a five o'clock shadow or anything - I'm sure I'm the only one who notices it. And when I do, I just whip the shaver out. |

That settles it- I'm setting a date with myself and a shaver tonight! I just dropped my fiance off at the airport, so I don't have to worry about him finding out and making fun. I think I'll use a cleansing oil as a lubricant, and just my plain old venus razor, unless anyone has a better suggestion? |
