Better count me in too. I agree with Bethany completely--the extra weight has changed my social life and my attitude. Several years ago I wrote a book on how to lose weight--I'm great at losing weight; I just have never been to keep it off. Now I don't dare tell anybody about the book--they'd look at my hips and crack up!!!
So I like this idea of virtual partners... unfortunately I can't exercise as I'm still recovering from a biking accident, and some broken bones, but hopefully by January 1 will be able to get on a treadmill again. Exercise is great for my metabolism and stress relief.
Thanks, Bethany, great idea! I'll report weekly. |

Yep...this is exactly me. I refuse to leave the house any more than necessary, I pray that no one I know from prior years will see me, and I refuse to date.
I am DONE with this weight holding me back! It is time to LOSE and LIVE!! |

I am still holding tough on the diet, though I haven't weighed in for a few days.
I did have a small slip up and had a small glass of wine at dinner at my sister's house (at least I still had a low-carb meal)
I am still not eating 5 times a day, but am definitely hitting 3 to 4 meals. That should change when I start weighing my food...I'll probably start that when I go on vacation the week after xmas. But I am still eating too much sodium because I am using my current tuna/salmon before breaking into the low-sodium stuff.
The rashes are also continuing to dissipate, thank goodness. |

Down a pound today!!
18 more to get 2 Goal 1 (my pre-surgery weight) and 29 more to get to Goal 2 (my optimal weight).
I think cracking down on the sodium will help immensely...I just have to make it happen, sigh. |

That's great Beth! You have a very strong constitution to be doing this through the holiday's... Good for you!
I on the other hand, just finished baking sonny boy's birthday cake and 6 dozen Christmas cookies...
I'm sure I'll be able to tack on 5 more lbs., by New Year's Day... |

If you were covered in itchy rashes and resorted to spraying jock itch powder on your neck last night, I guarantee that you would have a strong constitution too. |

Yeah, the jock itch spray on the neck was really the bottom of the bucket for me, sigh.
So changing topics a bit to Diet Coke and the impact on weight gain....
I have had a 20+ year * spam alert * to Diet Coke....I don't have blood anymore, I have Diet Coke pumping through my blood vessels! But unfortunately, Diet Coke has been proven to be a major contributor to metabolic syndrome...and looking at most of the people I see drinking DC regularly (like me), we all seem to have some excess stomach fat. (but yes, there are some exceptions)
Here are some quotes:
| Quote: |
Caffeine Nation: Diet Coke * spam alert *
Consumers Spend More than $21 Billion on Diet Sodas Each Year
August 2007
Celebrities like Elton John, Victoria Beckham and former President Bill Clinton admit to being hooked on diet soda, just like millions of Americans.
Drinking diet soda can increase the risk of "metabolic syndrome," a contributor to heart disease and diabetes, by 48 percent.
(Justin Sullivan/ Getty Images) But addicts beware: A new study out this week shows that as little as one can of soda per day is associated with a 48 percent increased risk of "metabolic syndrome," which plays a major role in heart disease and diabetes.
Despite the warnings, some people just can't kick their * spam alert *.

Symptoms: Metabolic Syndrome Is Tied to Diet Soda
February 5, 2008
Researchers have found a correlation between drinking diet soda and metabolic syndrome — the collection of risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes that include abdominal obesity, high cholesterol and blood glucose levels, and elevated blood pressure.
Over all, a Western dietary pattern — high intakes of refined grains, fried foods and red meat — was associated with an 18 percent increased risk for metabolic syndrome, while a “prudent” diet dominated by fruits, vegetables, fish and poultry correlated with neither an increased nor a decreased risk.
But the one-third who ate the most fried food increased their risk by 25 percent compared with the one-third who ate the least, and surprisingly, the risk of developing metabolic syndrome was 34 percent higher among those who drank one can of diet soda a day compared with those who drank none.
“This is interesting,” said Lyn M. Steffen, an associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Minnesota and a co-author of the paper, which was posted online in the journal Circulation on Jan. 22. “Why is it happening? Is it some kind of chemical in the diet soda, or something about the behavior of diet soda drinkers?”
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/05/health/nutrition/05symp.html |
They pegged me with the blood pressure...I once stopped drinking DC, and my blood pressure dropped 30 points in one week! Unfortunately, I relapsed, but I am concentrating on giving up the DC fully before the New Year. |

Well done Bethany.
I am definitely trying to limit diet soft drinks as well.
I had a really bad day and I am tempted to get junkfood tonight I really need to not do this though.
It sucks, I am stressed so I eat and then I am stressed about weight gain - vicious circle |

Nomi, have you thought about writing down WHY you want to lose weight? Every time you are tempted, you can pull it out and remind yourself of all the postive reasons...and then ask yourself if cheating is worth it.
I have no idea what your diet includes, but have you heard of carb cycling? If you eat low carb the vast majority of the time, it actually shakes things up (in a good way) if you increase your carb load periodically. I lost 45lbs years ago doing 2 weeks on low carb, and then taking a weekend off and eating whatever I wanted. But the key is to be able to do it in a controlled manner, and not overdoing it. But at least you know that you have a junk food break you can look forward to. What I found fascinating is that over time, I looked less and less forward to the weekend off...it just stopped being appealing to me.
There is a book called "Thin for Good" that focuses on low-carb, but also has a section on emotional eating and how to get through psychological roadblocks. I should pull that out and reread it myself!

I am with you on liking to eat! This is a great thread to help motivate, but also help everyone stay on track and get the support we need!
My weigh in. I am 121.5 lbs this morning. So, possibly down .5 lb?? |

Hi Sherry - welcome!!
Speaking eating....I have been on my rabbit food diet for 10 days now, and at this point I might actually consider eating the rabbit.
Work is INSANE this week (even more so than usual), and today I was hit with some major food cravings as I ran out to pick up the cats at the groomer. In the past I would have stopped and grabbed something junky, but I kept right on driving and went home and ate some more salad.
Interestingly, as I was typing this up I suddenly realized WHY I was so hungry today...I forgot to put any protein on both of my darn salads today! DUH!!! |

I'd take a half a pound...especially when you have so little to lose! |

You were good to pass on the junk, Bethany! You are definitely strong willed. And, I just realized that today is not Friday, and so it was not my weigh day. |

Nimue, my sacred Diet Coke is my very last vice, and I so HATE to give it up. But if it is making me FAT and raising my blood pressure, I need to find a replacement.
And I just read yesterday that green tea is not a good replacement if you have candida because of the mold, and that I should also lose the caffeine.
So what's left? Water, water, and more water (though I already drink a ton of that). Of course I could always go the route of some of the people on Curezone and start drinking my own urine. I do believe in never saying never....but that one has to be pretty far down my list, lol. |

Oh, no. Don't hate me, guys! Remember, I am doing this under doctors orders to get down to a specific weight (so I won't have to take cholesterol medication, have my platelets take a nose dive, and die of internal bleeding! ) |

I'm rootin for ya Riley!
The dreaded cholesterol meds are the pits.. Also, some folks who've been on Lipitor for a while, have shown decreased platelets... But you probably won't find that in the literature just yet. |
