Anyone know of some suitable inexpensive products (drugstore/supermarket) for a 12 year girl with breakouts around her hairline? Poor thing just started wearing makeup and also started breaking out so she needs cleansing/moisturising products that she can afford. She asked me for advice but I haven't used any of these type of products for decades? Any ideas? I was thinking of suggesting of Queen Helene Mint Julep etc.

Wow, I knew absolutely nothing about makeup at 12 years old! I was still into Enid Blyton story books and board games, and outdoorsy stuff...
Anyways - I think if she were my daughter I'd make her: wash face with glycerin and honey cleanser (don't ask me why, but this was what my mum made me use when I was breaking out at 14, which I did until I learnt about other cleansers 4-5 years later), slap on some ACV toner and moisturise with olive oil or some combination.

I've been told by an aethetician that breakouts around the hair line could be the result of lazy face washing... some people forget to wash all the way to the hair line or avoid the hair line so as not to mess their hair. I could see this happening to a younger girl... I remember rushing through everything when I was young!
How about cetaphil cleanser and moisturizer for sensitive skin? They're inexpensive and won't make the breakouts worse... that way she can see if the breakouts are hormonal or just an issue with lazy washing.
(P.S. - how times have changed... I had to BEG to wear lipstick until high school.) |

When my 14 year old daughter started with mild acne, my dermatolgist suggested that she use Panoxly 5% soap. (not sure if I spelled that correctly) I buy it at the grocery store and Wal Mart for about $5. It cleared everything beautifully and she still uses it daily (she is now 18 years old and has very nice skin). The 5% is benzoyl peroxide- it also comes in a 10% bar, which might be too harsh.
I know some people don't like BP, but it worked for her- just a suggestion. |

The foundation might be causing the breakouts. She might want to try mineral makeup. It's all natural and much better for the skin.

I suggest Cetaphil and if her skin is dry she could lightly apply Cellex-C Seasilk oil-free moisterizer.
Sunblock is very important and unfortunatly cheap brands are not suggested. Get Peter Thomas Roth oil-free SPF30.
If she need to scrub, she can mix Cetaphil cleanser with bakind soda. Very cheap! |

I started with the worst acne when I was 12/13, as soon as my periods started my skin went awful.
Rather than concentrating mainly on healthy eating, lots of water and supplements especially Zinc and B Vitamins.
Teenagers need supplements more than adults as their bodys use up more for development.

Skincare does not have to be expensive, it's great fun making up the recipes and at least you know what is going on her skin is natural. |

| Thanks for the replies and help I don't really want to suggest for her to make her own cosmetics as I would not be supervising her. I have made a lot of the DIY list myself before and I think it wouldn't be the best idea for me to suggest her to try make her own. I upset my skin quite badly quite a few times! My own fault for tweaking the recipes tho! I think she may be inclined to also experiment and I don't want her mom to blame me if anything goes wrong. The Panoxyl sounds like a good idea as she was wishing she could afford Proactive. I wanted to find her a clay mask, cleanser, moisturiser and exfoliant. Any one use any of the Queen Helene? |

| I'd suggest she stopped using make up and also follow Roebuds advice of checking what supplements she takes or needs to take + talk about diet with her... |

| When I was fifteen, I suddenly broke out all over my forehead. I remember a friend's mom saw me and said, "oh honey, you need zinc." I started taking 100 mg zinc tablets and it cleared all up. I still don't know why but I'm glad it worked. Suggest this to the girl. Maybe it'll help. |
