Hi Laral, Yes, I have been using Solar Rx for about a month now.
The ingredients listed are nano zinc oxide, avocado oil, carrot seed oil and black cumin oil.
I found it on the Environmental Working Group site and they listed it the safest.
I thought it was sort of expensive at $26.95, but I use it every day on my face and neck under makeup and after a month I have about half a bottle left.

Wow! I am surprised that the EWG listed this as the safest sunscreen considering that the nano zinc oxide that it contains is a true nanoparticle (their website says 20 nm or 25 nm depending on where you look). I wonder what the EWG's stance on nanoparticles is? They give the nano zinc oxide the same safety rating 0.7 as regular zinc oxide. It seems to me that most "environmentally oriented" groups are very concerned about the whole nanotechnology thing so it seems odd that they don't seem to be concerned. I use products with microfine zinc oxide but I don't know if I would feel comfortable using the Key's product.

Thanks Theresa!
I am very skeptical about all of what I have read about nano. When I heard about the nano issues a few months ago, I did as much research as I could. The problem I have is that everything I read against nano has no facts and everything I read from science reports says there is no evidence. I even read the entire Friends of Earth Report.
I date a dermatologist from UCLA Med School and he looked into this as well for me. He could not find any reports that showed any connection to free radicals and nano zinc or titanium. His comment to me was that the Australian dermatologists that wrote articles were all pro nano zinc because of the better coverage. They seem to be the world experts on skin cancer.
I am an actor by profession and his message to me was that skin cancer is far more dangerous and that unexposed skin sun damage will prematurely age me. He got my attention.
BTW, the EWG, Friends of Earth and the Breast Cancer Foundation are all affiliated from what I read.
Anyhow, I plan to keep using the product because it feels great, no junk chemicals and it really protects my skin.
I am going to write to Keys and get their position.
I will continue to study.
Best

JackieB are you saying that the nano zinc oxide offers better protection that micronized zinc oxide and that the better protection offsets the possible risks? If so that would be one way to make a decision about this. I guess it all comes down to balancing risks and benefits, not always easy to do!
My position on this is that there are things I know about nano zinc oxide particles and then there are things that I don't know. I am sort of taking a wait and see approach until I can find out more about the nano zinc oxide and then eventually will be able to say either that I will not use it or that I would feel comfortable using it. In the meantime I will continue to use my sunscreen with micronized zinc oxide because I totally agree about the dangers of unprotected sun exposure.
It seems odd that Friends of the Earth and the EWG would be affiliated. IMO the Friends of the Earth are too alarmist about the whole nano thing and the EWG (who I think are alarmist about a lot of things) don't seem too concerned about the nano stuff or I should say don't seem too concerned about nano zinc oxide.
Pleas let us know what Keys says. I would appreciate their view on this. |

Hi Theresa, I need to make this quick because I need to run out.
I will let you know what they say. I will post the question on their forum.
When I was researching micronized over nano, there were two things that pushed me to the nano side (sounds dark huh!) Nano particles are smaller and rounder and micronized particles are irregular and oblong. My boy friend said that round and small particles cover more area evenly and have less gaps. Also that is why I can wear it under makeup and it does not show. The other thing that kept me away from most of the micronized was that the products that I could find had all sorts of junk in them and most that I tried made my eys and skin sting.
I will be back to you when I hear from Keys.
Have a nice weekend and stay out of the sun.

Let me just start by saying that I may be having a "stupid" moment here. But take a look at these charts from the Keys website:
The way I read them is that the Solar Rx trasmits less UV radiation up to about 360nm (guessed from the diagram) or so but from 360nm on up it lets a lot more of the UV radiation through. Does this mean that it only enhances UVA blocking up to about 360nm or so and then offers worse UVA blocking? If I am not getting this right what is the proper way to interpret the chart? TIA |
