I need some help for my poor hair.
I used to have very thick hair; however, after years of perming and colouring, my hair becomes very fine right now. I am only 23 years, and I am very worried about the thickness of my hair. And it may also caused by the genetic reasons. My grandma and all female relatives from my dad's family all have very fine hair. And some of them got fine and thin hair in their twenties (the same situation as mine). And nutrition supplements or drugs I can use to improve this situation? Thanks. |

Hello Bic145,
I have quite fine hair as well but a lot of it, my sister on the other hand has the thickest, coarsest 'horse' hair so I think it all comes down to genetics as you mentioned. I'm always wary of hair-loss though, it's just one of those niggling things at the back of your mind-- I've seen some women, both Asian and Caucasian with hair loss in the crown area and I wonder as it's an area that they can't see themselves are they aware?? I must admit the thing that frightens me the most is thinning hair-- and it's not only guys that suffer from this condition, genetics doesn't descriminate. With serious instances of hair loss, I'd go check the problem out with my doctor.
I take a Multivitamin and vitamin C in powder form everyday, and recently starting taking a Silica formula which is meant to promote healthy hair, skin and nails.
I also make sure my scalp gets a good massage, usually before bed-- with both hands, run them through your hair, then grab a handful of hair and pull firmly at the roots, do this to all sections. An Aveda consultant taught me that trick, and it really helps to stimulate the scalp (and won't pull out any hair :P). Alternatively, you can get your partner to give you a nice and relaxing head massage-- that works wonders for both of you.
I never used to own a brush, I only combed my hair in the shower and style it with a round brush, but I've invested in a good boar bristle brush that does a good job of stimulating the scalp. I heard that good blood circulation in the scalp promotes healthy hair growth..... but only brush a few times and not 100 times as I was once led to believe! :P

Hi bic145,
Try the Nioxin shampoo / scalp therapy line. The shampoos are formulated to help stimulate hair growth (or reduce hair loss -- two sides of the same coin). The Scalp Therapy works WONDERS in terms of the effect it has on your scalp. It softens and strengthens your hair, provides this cool mint tingle to your head that is wonderful (yes, Mabsy loves it too since she's my minty-twin), and best of all, it really does protect your hair. I don't have a severe amount of hair loss, but then again, I have short hair and I've been using Nioxin for a long time. You can use it even if you aren't losing hair -- it's a really great product nonetheless.

I definitely second the vote on the Nioxin range. You can really see that the amount of hair you lose diminishes with use of this range. Plus, like Lisa said, it feels minty and invigorating
And I would definitely take Summertimegirl's advice on taking Silica. Silica is supposed to improve the health of nails, hair and skin. Three birds with one stone |

Hello Bic145,
One of my mom's friends who is recovering from cancer, lost quite a bit of hair from chemotherapy, is using Shen Min products for hair: Topical Lotion for Scalp, Hair Thickening Serum and Vitamins Supplement. She's very happy with it. Here in Canada, they are sold in drugstores like Shoppers Drug Mart or London Drugs. |

You girls need to read up on the topic of 'Androgens' and 'Androgen Receptors'. There is tons of info online. Personally I think a girl should use Rogaine for women which in fact does increase blood flow and you should also use a topical anti-androgen. Spiro is a totally safe topical androgen receptor blocker. Most spiro smells like a skunk however I believe Dr. Lee atwww.minoxidil.com sells an odorless version.

I took myself to the only hair products-* spam *-salon outlet that I knew sold Nioxin in the city and guess what? They were all OUT of the 300ml bottles of the Scalp Therapy line (for both coloured and normal hair). The crazy thing was the hairdresser offered to let me take the 1000ml bottle of the Scalp Theraphy shampoo and conditioner home to try ONCE and if I didn't like it, exchange it for something else... They're massive bottles!! but as much as it was tempting to have ONE TRY of the product, I declined and left them my details to reserve a set from their next order due in a couple of weeks (and will be checking their liquid levels! :P) !) ..... Nioxin is a pricey line but I want to try it as it sounds like a stimulating and nourishing treat for the scalp and hair...and going by the scarcity of products in the store it sounds like it's quite popular! Can't wait to try it!

Oh, thanks everyone. Thank you for your detailed advice. Many people mentioned Nioxin line of hair products. I am just wondering where can I purchase them. Are they available in most of the drug stores, Walmart, or they are only sold in hair salons? Thanks for your reply. |

Nioxin is only available in salons. Try a search online as there are a lot of "competitors" out there that try to outdo each other on prices -- and find a store online that ships free after a certain amount (since bottles of shampoo / conditioner are HEAVY in terms of shipping).
You might want to go to a salon that uses the line and tell them to wash your hair with the Nioxin shampoo and give you a scalp therapy treatment. Basically, you rub the scalp therapy onto your head and scalp -- wrap a REALLY hot towel around your head for 3 minutes -- and then rinse your hair with cool water. You will feel SO refreshed and your hair will be as SOFT as a baby's -- trust me. The scalp therapy does wonders for your hair
If you can't find a spa that offers it, definitely try the product out for yourself at home.
