I'm wondering what the benefits are of microdermabrasion vs. peels vs. daily exfoliation vs. retinols. If you use an exfoliator everyday do you need microdermabrasion or peels? What do they do that exfoliation doesn't? And what does retin-A do that any of these don't do??

If you exfoiliate everyday i dont think that you really need microdermabrasion unless you have fine lines you want to get rid of fast. Microdermabrasion takes several treatments before you see results

there isn't a need to exfoliate every day because the cells aren't renewing themselves that fast anyway in younger skin. In terms of the different types of exfoliants, basic mechanical ones will only get rid of the very top layer of dead skin cells, microderm and retinol goes deeper than that which is why you then have to use a sunscreen because you can burn easier, as you don't have that layer of protection anymore. But you do get better looking skin with microderm because of the fact that it is getting rid of more dead cells. These types of exfoliants are more important for more mature people as their cell renewal slows down, therefore this will boost their basal layer into new cell production, so they won't have older cells at the surface for longer periods of time

anyway, back to the original question
Very Happy you would only do one or the other, either use a mechanical exfoliator, or use a microderm kit. Retinol is more harsh, so i would just generally stay away from it. I was using laura merciers exfoliator which i thought was one of the best ones, but have now started to use lancome's resurface microdermabrasion kit, and there is a significant change in my skin texture.

i've been using paula's choice skin recovery antioxidant and it has 2% retinol..I have rosacea and can honestly say it hasnt irritated my skin..plus i read retinol can thicken the skin so maybe it's not such a bad ingredient after all

I agree with oli_d that daily exfoliation is unnecessary. Three times a week should be fine if you are using a good exfoliator. If you prefer to "feel exfoliated" daily, then on days when not using some exfoliant product, genly remove your cleanser with a gauze cloth. They have a gentle exfoliating effect too.

I use a mix of microderm, peels and manual exfoliants but always put 2 full days between each treatment.

at the end of the day it depends how much retinol is in a produst for it to have an adverse effect or any effect at all, too much will cause photosensitinity, too little won't do anything at all.

So even for a 37 year old like myself with occasional acne breakouts using a Glycolic toner at 7% daily can be too much?

well, peels that dermatologists use have minimum 20% glycolic acid and it can go up to 80%, so 7% shouldn't be too bad. The way i look at things is if the product is made for daily use, as toners are, it can't be too bad. I use a moisturiser that has 4% glycolic acid in it and you don't even have to use an spf with it, so it can't really be doing much more than getting rid of the top layer of dead skin, like any basic exfoliator would.
