I am so depressed Crying or Very sad Not only am I 8 days overdue in my pregnancy (I feel like a beached whale), I somehow ended up with this horrific looking cold sore overnite Shock I don't know what brought the stupid thing on, I've only had two in my life, this one and another one about 2 years ago. The one I had last time took about a month to heal, I don't have that long to wait....hopefully this baby will come any day now and I need to get rid of this hidious thing before I give birth so that I will beable to kiss my ds when he is born.
If anyone has any advice on how to heal these things up nice and quick, I am all ears! We have to get rid of this NOW!! Thanks for listening...I feel like the most unattractive woman on the planet right now Crying or Very sad

The most effective topical cold sore treatment I have come across is Tea Tree Oil.
Hope the big day goes well Very Happy

I get cold sores far too often...but I know how to minimize their impact.

Here's the scientifically proven route, and it will, without fail, shorten the cold sore's stay and improve its appearance.

1. Buy a tube of Abreva at your local drugstore/pharmacy. The size of the tube is shockingly small, and it's expensive, but it works. Apply it directly to the area a few times a day.

2. Beyond that, keep your lips constantly moisturized with a good balm or chapstick...or, like the person above mentioned, tea tree oil.

3. There is a prescription anti-viral drug, acyclovir (brand name: Zovirax), that really helps with cold sores. Of course, being pregnant I doubt you will want to mess with that, but just for future reference, this stuff works, and if you start taking it the second you feel that ominous "tingle" on your lips, you can definitely avoid the full effects of the cold sore.

Hope this helps you out.

Ahhh....I really feel for you. Once a cold sore is there, past the tingle stage, it'll be around for a week+...so settle in. I second the tea tree oil...careful not to infect the bottle contents. Rosebud's posts (and others) have got me dabbing it here there and everywhere lately ~ gently relief.

Stress, being run-down brought it on...how couldn't you be? Hope you'll call in your support circle to take care of you. Be extra nice and gentle with yourself...have a man-servent bring you sweet smelling white flowers and lay near the vase w/ cucumber slices on your eyes...and tea tree oil on your lip.
Best wishes...soon!

I was going to say Abreva too, but I don't think pregnant people can use it. Best to stick with the tea tree oil. You can also mix a salt and water paste and apply it on the sore a few times a day, that'll help.

There is lots of discussion about various cures/treatments/supplements etc. on different message boards.

Here is a link to the Curezone Herpes/Genital Herpes board:

http://curezone.com/forums/f.asp?f=396

And here is a link to a list of treatments on Herpes-Coldsores.com

http://www.herpes-coldsores.com/herpes_treatment.htm

If you do a google search you'll also find lots of sites that have natural treatments, and reviews of things that have worked/not worked for people. Some I believe use coconut oil or apple cider vinegar as well.

I hope you're successful in knocking this out and not passing it onto your son. Lots of people don't think cold sores are that big of a deal... and I guess they're not, but an ex-boyfriend had them and passed them on to me in the form of type 1 (HSV1) genital herpes, which has a much bigger stigma, and has changed my life dramatically.

But this is a beauty board, not a medical board Smile

Best of luck, and congratulations.

i think zovirax shouldn't be used during pregnancy only if it's taken in capsule form, it's ok if you use the cream directly on the cold sore itself.

A great remedy is a moist earl grey tea bag. Celestial Seasonings is a good one. Dip it in hot water to get it wet all the way through and gently ring out the water and place it over the cold sore for twenty minutes. You may want to wrap it in a little plastic wrap so any water that's left in it doesn't drip.

Do this 3 times a day until it's gone. This works really well. It draws out the impurities, kills the bacteria and dries the thing right up. This also works if you have a cut or an ingrown nail that gets infected. It draws all the gunk right out. Tea tree oil is a great idea and you can apply this when you're done with each tea bag.

I wish you all the best and congratulations on your baby. Very Happy

Rinsing with salt water has always worked for me. May be a little tough if the cold sore is on the outside of your lip versus inside.

That and prescription cortison creme (Oracort -a 0.1% dental corticosteriod) has helped clear any up in 1-2 days.

ARGH I feel your pain. I recently had one the size of texas that ran from right up inside one nostril and extended down halfway to the lip. That monster aside I find the most effective treatment is Lipsine tablets the moment you feel the tingle (bit late for that now and being pregnant maybe not advisable).

But, if you dont have the other stuff on hand... toothpaste. Stings like hell but it is an emergency remedy I have had since age 14. Just put the toothpaste on top of the cold sore like a mask.

Stress can bring on cold sores, which at 18 days overdue could be your case.. oh my gosh, I cannot believe they haev not induced!!

Go each some hot hot curry! Force that mini-me out! Smile (come to think of it you could try a bit of the curry on the cold sore too! Very Happy )

Thanks for the replies everyone! Tiger_tim I'm only 8 days overdue, I couldn't imagine being 18 Laughing !!! I would have jumped off a bridge by now (joking)! We had the non-stress test yesterday and baby is still doing great. I on the other hand am only 30% effaced and a less than a fingertip dialated, and baby is still pretty high, just doesn't want to drop despite my efforts of walking daily and other methods to help get things moving along! If nothing happens this weekend we are going to evict him on Tuesday by induction...wish me luck!!! Hopefully something will happen by then! Confused

Oh, moosette, I feel for you. I was 2 days over due and could barely stand it. Good luck for the delivery.

My mom used Blistex Medicated in the tube for cold sores. If I get cracks on the sides of my mouth I use it.

I use pure lanoline at nite on my lips when they start getting dry and chapped which then leads to a hurt in the corners if I don't. Not sure its really a cold sore but whatever it turns into it hurts. The lanoline works after one nite and at worst after 2 nites. I have a few jars (which last forever) that I bought at local health food store.

I think I found a cure for my coldsore!!! I went to the healthfood store yesterday and the saleslady recommended this ointment called Super Lysine. I've been applying it several times since and the coldsore seems to be healing up very nicely! I'm so happy...maybe I will be rid of this ugly thing sooner than I thought! Very Happy

Hi
I am "blessed" with getting these aweful cold sores usually every other month. I take Lysine tablets daily to reduce the chances of getting them (yuh, does'nt work) what I have noticed it helps the size of them though. Since you have only had a couple of them my suggestion would be TEA TREE OIL. Works wonders to keep it moist (so it is less painful) and Abreva will help dry it as well. I know this sounds grose, but if your lip has small blisters, I open my blisters up to drain them. Then I apply Tea Tree oil and Abreva. At least the size will shrink, then you just have to wait for the scab to heal.

moosette....I'm glad you've found something that helps! I really don't have ideas for the coldsore, but wanted to send you hugs and let you know that my thoughts are with you!

I can relate to how you're feeling....was waaayyyy overdue with my 3rd, and finally scheduled to be induced. Not only was my body out of whack, but so was my skin, hair and my brain! A friend of mine suggested I visit the salon for a little TLC....which did wonders for the way I was feeling....also helped my mental health!! My water broke that evening....at the hosptial by 9pm and had my daughter just 3.5 hours later! With me, the longer the pregnancy, the shorter the labor and delivery!!!

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your babe today, and tomorrow, when you are induced. Can't wait to hear from you!

I thought I was the only one who used toothpaste! Once a year I feel that little "tingle" that makes me think a cold sore is coming but when I dab toothpaste on it, it never forms. So it works as a prevention, too!

If this will happen again you can use Use an L-lysine ointment as a way on how to get rid of a cold sore fast especially when you first feel a tingle on the lip. Start applying the ointment at the edges of the sore and continue your way in. Apply the ointment three times a day. Or try applying an ice cube on the affected area may also be a way on how to get rid of a cold sore fast overnight. Hold it there still until the ice cube melted. Once the cube thawed, grab a dry towel and carefully dab the cold sore dry. Don’t rub it. Once it’s dry, take a little rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and dab the cold sore. This will make the cold sore a little numb from the ice so not as bad as it could.

If you're not pregnant then go to your doctor and get famvir 500mg tablets 3 at one time -as soon as you feel the tngle, take them and voila, no cold sore. Works for me every time.

For cold sores, L-Lysine 500mg and 2 aspirin every 4 hours. A dab of alcohol on the cold sore. If that doesn't work, try fingernail polish remover. Really ! Tea Tree Oil does nothing. Washing out your mouth with mouthwash is for cancer sores not cold sores. Do not use Blistex it will only make the cold sore spread. My mother used to have cold sores everyday of her life so I have done the research.
