Hiya! I have a long weekend coming and we will be spending it in the beach. Even though I will avoid direct sunlight, I know my face will be abnormally exposed to UVA/UVB for 4 days Sad Should I maybe stop my tretinoin at night for one week before and during my trip? so that my face won't be too sun-sensitive? What do you guys think?

yes!!!stop the retin-a. Where are u going? Can u get some La Roche sunblock?

My derm takes me off Retin-A (well, when I was on it) every year in May -and I live in Canada...the sooner the better.

The first time I tried tretinoin ( years ago), I didn't know about the importance of sunblock or that it makes your skin sensitive to the sun. I didn't go to the beach-just walking around the city. I still have the resulting pigmentation spots.

Gosh! Thanks so much! Smile I am going next week! I hope one week of Retin A is enough! Smile And definitely I have my LRP Anthelios with me Smile I also got some Hawaiian Tropic 70 for the body! I am going to El Nido Palawan! I am not going to Sunbathe, but Island Hopping in the boat will take some toll on my skin Sad

Have fun-don't forget a hat. I spend summers in Greece so I know-even if you avoid the sun you're still vunerable. I'm prone to melasma-so I had to be extra careful. Still, I noticed darkening of areas on my face despite wearing a hat etc.... Finally figured out what it was. The sun was reflecting off the water (yes I wore a sun hat in the water) right on my face!

If your not prone to melasma you don't have to be as paranoid as I am-take the precautions & have fun!

I'm in the same situation right now.

I have a vacation planned for HAWAII and all I can think about is how stressed I'm going to be about avoiding the sun. A year ago I would have gone to Hawaii, enjoyed that sun and gotten a killer tan.

Now that I'm experiencing signs of aging, I know that I will never again experience those carefree days at the beach. It's actually kind of sad, isn't it, when you lose that innocence and start actually acknowledging what damage the sun is doing to you?

Anyway... I am planning on going off Retin A and glycolic entirely, and just slathering myself constantly with sunscreen and wearing hats. What more can you do? Beyond that, you just have to enjoy yourself.

You're right. Slather on all anti-oxidants: Vit. C cream (I even layered Prevage under it). I would even use vit.c or any anti-oxidant at night. That way, the last time I was there wasn't that bad.I replaced my retin-a & glycolics with kinerase which dosen't make skin more sunsensitive.I had young children-so staying away from the beach was NOT an option. Normally, we would be there for 2 months every summer. So you can see the potential for damage.

After that, I just whip out the pigmentation serums when I come home to undo the damage-luckily Canadian winters help Rolling Eyes

I miss the old days-coming back from greece sleek & bronzed. Now, coming back wrinkled & spotty Sad

I am going away to Cyprus in June and have just started a new skin care routone - or should I say am in the process of starting one.

I have used SC Retinol 0.5 once so far, my skin didn't like it too much so I'm letting it settle before trying again. I have also started using OCM to cleanse and relax-a-line. I intend to make my own Vit C serum in the next few days and introduce that as well.

Can yo please tell me when I should STOP using the retinol in readiness for my holiday? And also, can you give me any tips for keeping my skin tip-top whilst on holiday? I too have realised that the sun is a cruel thing and will be avoiding it when I can! Confused

Just an update Cool

I've stopped all treatments for this weekend's holiday...

AM Routine:
Vitamin C (CSRx + Friming)
Hydra-cool (ISC)
Sunblock (LRP Uvidea)

PM Routine
Rx Cleanser
Non alcoholic Grapefruit toner (Mario Badescu)
Witch hazel
Rosehip oil (Attar of Rose by Burt Bees)

I REALLLLY want to keep it simple... In addition... I WENT SHOPPING and I BOUGHT... Hawaiian tropic OZONE 70 protect, and Hawaiian Aloe verA gel (both for the body ofcourse)... call me paranoid... Razz Oh, and I also got the Dermalogica Soothing Protection Spray Very Happy

I'm also kinda excited to go back to my routine after the trip, I figure, atleast I am giving my skin time to breath from Tretinoin! After a couple of tretinoin-free days, I've stopped peeling, you know the annoying shedding flakey skin with the sunblock in the morning(even though I exfoliated the night before)

WEAHOLT, maybe you should stop a month (28 days?) before your holiday? But let's wait for the experts' advise.

I would stop retinols now. There's nothing wrong with continuing mild aha's-but it will make you more sun sensitive. Don't forget, I'm melasma prone, so I'm pretty careful PLUS I was spending each & every day on the beach for 2 months (poor me Cool ). I'd slather on anti-oxidents like vit c & prevage & I used Kinerase-the small tube was 2 months worth. Also used wildberry serum (I have oily skin) or something similar for hyperpigmentation. Then the usual slathering of euro sunscreens. An exfoliant to remove dead cells is a good idea-but I would use a manual one. Actually, Bobbi Brown now has buffing grains which are wonderful. What I also like about it is that you mix it with your regular cleanser & can control the amount of exfoliation. Great for travel too.

Thanks Marina... I've stopped the Tretinoin for about a week now... And I must say, my skin has gotten less sensitive again. I applied topical salicylic acid (mario badescu's) over a small zit, and there was no stinging anymore. Usually, I'd sting from the alcohol in that ointment...

So now I'm not afraid to see the sun anymore this weekend (together with LRP) Wink But I will go back to my regime after the beach! Wink
