In January, the CBC and Kraft Foods Canada launched a national contest, challenging Canadians to winning the title of "Hockeyville". As stereotype has it, Canadians are all (apparently) mad for hockey, and it is our "favorite national pasttime" .
I like hockey. Don't get me wrong. However, I've personally not watched a game on t.v. all season, and don't care. We're not a bunch of hockey-crazed patriots, I assure you. Great game though, and more fun to watch amateur games than professional.
Anyhow, the contest drew enteries from hundreds of towns and cities across this large country. The judges are looking-for enteries which exhibit strong community spirit, and a love for the game: http://www.cbchockeyville.ca/about/
I am proud to say that as of this past Wednesday, Smithers, British Columbia has made it to the final fifteen! Smithers is the small town in northern B.C. where I grew-up & lived for 15 years. Though I've lived here for 10 years, and prefer a city lifestyle, my parents are still in Smithers, and it really is a great community, where people work hard, know their neighbours, and are there to offer support to people in need. And ... there's a lot of hockey & figure-skating that goes on in the Smithers Civic Centre, nearly all year (seasonally & summer clinics for both sports).
Their rink is about 50 years-old, and everyone fights for ice-time. A new sheet of ice is apparently being built. They could really use the prize-money, should they win the title of "Hockeyville".
You can view the video which the Town of Smithers submitted to the contest. It's short, but definitely showcases the community spirit. (The Smithers profile is in the Pacific region, near the bottom of the page.)

For those of you whom live in Canada: the judges selected Smithers this past Wednesday, and the audience & viewers did not need to vote. Please, I hope that you do tune-in on Wednesday, and should they need your telephone or Internet vote, give them some help. For me

P.S. Yes, I know a lot of the people in the photos, as well as some on the video. Small town, remember?
Wow! A bunch of people from Smithers did a (nearly) cross-country pilgrimage to Kingston, Ontario, just to show their community spirit!

Wow, that's an interesting contest and I wish your hometown the best of luck! By the way, I am a HUGE hockey fan (which is somewhat rare in Texas). I'll be rooting for my team as we start the playoffs today. GO STARS! |

Yes, the stereotype is that Canadians are hockey-addicted and Americans (well, mostly Southerners and maybe especially Texans) are hockey-ignorant. That's very cool about your hometown, Caspers Mum. I hope they win.
TAMgirl99 -- I'll be rooting right along with you. We've been Stars season ticket holders for several years, so I'll be at the AAC today screaming my head off. |
