Hi All! I'm a new member but I've been reading the forums for a while. I finally decided to take the plunge and shake up my skin care regimen a bit-- or actually start one. I'm 36 and don't really do much of anything except wash my face off in the AM and PM. In general my skin is sensitive and a little dry but pretty good. My biggest problem is circles and puffiness under my eyes.
In the last month or so I've read tons of reviews, tried a few products and finally today came home with a big bag of goodies -- I'm so excited!!
But now I'm realizing that this soap and water girl has no idea what to do with all this new stuff. Help from the gurus at EDS would be very appreciated!
So... here's my haul:
Dr. H CC and cleansing milk (probably overkill but I bought the milk first and loved it so I wanted to try the cream)
Emu oil and HA serum
Avacado oil (put this on after a shower last night and couldn't believe how great my skin felt this morning!)
Ystheal retinaldehye cream
Purity coffee bean under eye treatment
Skinceuticals C,E and ferulic
JB green apple peel for sensitive skin -- still get some redness if I leave on too long but I love it!
I'm thinking AM:
DHCC
retinaldehyde cream (3x/week)
coffee bean tmt
emu/HA
PM:
DHCM
Skinceuticals C, E, F
emu/HA
Does this make sense? Are there any major newbie mistakes I'm making? And is there anything else I just need to buy?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

Cecelia, your routine looks good. The only things I would change is to switch vit C (am) and retinaldehyde(pm) , and add sunscreen because retinoids make the skin very photosensitive and using them w/o s/s will make your skin more harm than good.

I agree with Jumpingball - best to switch the ystheal to night. Also not a good idea to use HA/emu over your actives - Ystheal/Skinceuticals until you're used to it. It really intensifies absorption and you might sting yourself. Also using Ystheal thins the epidermis slightly so you might find the Skinceuticals becomes a bit stingy at first. I'd work up with the Ystheal; use sparingly and not every night to start with. See how the Skinceuticals feels after using the Ystheal and play it by ear. |

Looks like a pretty perfect routine, I agree with switching the retinoid and C serum though. Also, are you using a sunscreen? You'll need it with all of the exfoliation. Welcome to the forum |

Only thing I would add is to make sure your skin is a lil bit damp when you put on your emu oil + HA, this will make the emu oil but easier to absorb.
Very jealous of your routine. You have the routine I wish i could afford. |

Thanks so much for all of your feedback!!!
I'll switch up the retinaldehyde and vit C and go easy on the Ystheal to start. I actually used a prescription retinol several years ago to help with eczema and it was pretty hard on my skin -- I'm hoping the lower dose and formulation will help.
Molly, thanks for the recommendation on the HA/emu oil and the actives -- sometimes I forget you can have too much of a good thing.
I can't believe I forgot about sunscreen! That's actually the one skin care thing I've been pretty good about over the years, although I usually just use my cheapo L'oreal moisturizer that has SPF 15.
And cuppre, it's very possible I have the routine I wish I could afford! We'll have to see how I do with all of this. So far, I'm loving the Dr. H products though!
(Also, a little post-note for those with eczema, I've had horrible problems with on my hands and feet and occasionally on my face, since I was 8. After starting on Zyrtec and finding out I had undiagnosed hypothyroidism, I haven't had a flare up since -- going on 5 years eczema free now! ) |

GACK!!
So while I had purchased everything else above, I hadn't actually gotten the skinceuticals yet -- for some reason I thought it was around $45, not $115! After buying an eye serum from revive for that price that made my eyes swell up like crazy, I'm not willing to risk that much anymore!
I think I'll be trying the Candessence VitC/E instead. |

It's nice to see that someone else read the forums and went shopping, too! Within a week of reading the forums, I had about half a dozen packages arriving at my house...Dremu, AHA, PSF pumpkin peel, etc. My husband wanted to know what the heck I was buying, and what it was for. I just said....Um...can't say..it's too close to Christmas!
Seriously, thanks for this post...a lot of the items you purchased, I had purchased, so this one really helped a lot! |

msaries1, I just saw your post -- I'm glad to know it helped someone else too! It was all a bit overwhelming when I unwrapped everything.
How are you liking all the new goodies? I've been eyeing the PSF pumpkin peel but I think my skin is probably too sensitive for it. |

Vonstella at your S&G!
What is Nuance Up? Is this a sunscreen?
OK, after using most of my new haul for a couple of days, I have some probably really basic questions for the EDS experts.
The Ystheal cream - do you leave this on all night? It ends up feeling a little greasy and I'm wondering if I can wash my face a couple of hours later or if that will just defeat the purpose. So far, my skin seems to be tolerating it pretty well. Much better than my earlier experience with a prescription retin A product!
Also, the HA serum... mine smells. Not horrible, but not good either. Is it supposed to smell? It's pretty strong. Also, is it supposed to be so yellow? I just want to make sure I bought the right thing! |

Sounds strange to me. Where did you buy it? Is it just plain old HA or does it contain some vitamins or anti-oxidants. It's usually just like thick water so transparent.
I don't think it's a good idea to wash off your Ystheal but try it and see. I've heard the cream's a bit thick. |

Cecelia - I did exactly the same when I first joined (and that's not so long ago). My husband keeps saying, "what the heck are all these packages? and why is it Christmas for you and not for the rest of us?" Love this place... |

Thanks for the reply Molly! I was wondering why everyone was raving about it and no one commented on the smell!
I just looked again and I bought Skin Eternal hyaluronic serum from Source Naturals. When I look at the ingredient list, it's chock full of other stuff (Vit. C, DMAE, Vit E, CoEQ10).
Has anyone else used this? Am I better off with a straight HA serum?
Cesce - We're bad aren't we! I keep finding more products I want to try but I really want to save up my money for the Jan Marini eyelash serum! I think this forum is going to be a problem for me. |

I looked it up and it says it's only 10% HA so you're not really getting the full HA absorbancy effect. It most likely sits on your face a bit because of the glycerine, but that's common in C serums. The DMAE should smell a bit fishy. I have my doubts about the stability plus the efficacy of this kind of mixture. I'm not a DIY expert but it seems an unlikely mix because they all need different PH levels plus some are oil soluble and some water (I could be talking rubbish though as my understanding is v. superficial). Maybe use it up quickly before the Vit C oxidizes. In this case you won't know seeing as it's already yellow which is the usual indication. |

Molly, thanks so much for taking the time to look up the ingredients and give me your feedback! I just can't get over how helpful everyone here is!
I've already ordered the Vit C/E/Ferulic from candessence and from what I've read I don't think I really need the DMAE. I think I'll probably just try to find some pure HA somewhere -- I just can't get past the smell. It smells sugary sweet -- for some reason it just doesn't feel right, putting something that smells like candy on your face! I sure wish I'd paid more attention.
So, now that I've given it such a raving review, anyone in San Diego want a free bottle to try. |
