I can find the shelf life of sunscreen online (the consensus seems to be two years as long as physcial integrity holds up-- no separating), but what about bug spray? |

To be honest I have no idea but some of my bug sprays are ancient. Like they've moved with me 3 or 4 times throughout the years. They still smell real strong like bug spray and still work! Isn't it the smell that keeps the bugs away? Unlike sunscreen which is an undetectable force at work there, I think (although I could be wrong) that bug spray works on scent. So as long as it still smells like bug spray it should still be good. You know if its chunky or foul then toss it but Bug Spray isn't the most glamourous product to begin with... |

Yeah, that's kinda what I thought. I just wasn't sure if you're not supposed to use it if it's too old, like if the chemicals in it change and become potentially harmful to your skin (chemical burns, what not). I asked because my boyfriend and I are going on a nine mile hike this weekend and I dug out a whole arsenal of old (1-3yrs) bug spray and wondered if I should toss it or just buy new. it just seems wasteful to toss nearly full bottles! |

Geez, bug spray thats only 1-3 years old is practically brand new. You have a point about the chemicals going bad but I doubt that will happen otherwise they'd have put an expiration date on it or you'd have heard about something like that by now. Plus I've used ten year old bugspray and live to tell about it. I think you'll be fine. |
