I am in my early 20's and was wondering if it's true that if i start using anti-aging products such as eye creams to prevent wrinkles that my skin will become dependant upon these products and stop producing it's own natural elasticity

This sounds like a myth doesn't it? I've heard it too, I'm not entirely sure what to believe... however, I heard that it is products containing plant extracts that your skin becomes dependent upon. Who knows. It makes sense since once you start using the product, then you'd HAVE to keep using it (thus buying more).. but that's just my cynical side talking

Hi BC girl
I think when you're talking about anti-aging products there are two categories: prevention and repair.

I think repairing what isn't damaged would be a mistake and this would be wrinkle-reducing stuff.

On the other side there is prevention. Anti-oxidant serums like C and sunscreen would fall into this category and I think can only be beneficial.

I think skin does change if you use products. My understanding is quite simple. It's an organ and it functions well when you're young so it should be well moisturised naturally and exfoliate naturally so I don't think it's a good idea to meddle with these natural functions because then the skin stops doing them itself.

Of course not all young people have perfect skin functions though so if you have acne or whatever you might get something.

But if it's in good health just protect it.

Just my opinion

Sorry, I didn't really answer your question.

What I mean is. Young people who feel they must use moisturiser even though their skin is balanced might find once they use it that their skin doesn't moisturise itself anymore. Ditto, exfoliation. So they carry on needing these products. These are replacing natural functions.

People were always telling me that I should use moisturiser when I was your age, but it just messed my skin up - I think it was better off without it.

Adding protection like anti-oxidants and sunscreen on the other hand is not replacing a function so you don't need to carry on using it. On the other hand, once you stop using them you might find they made such a difference to your skin that you don't want to be without it. But it's a want not a necessity.

I very much doubt it! We all know collagen production is highest in your 20's and slows from then on, hence one major reason why we age - its inherent. Just because we put a cream on our face, this doesnt mean that your facial skin is going to change and stop producing collagen because an anti-aging product has been providing it (nor does the skin turnover or production on the rest of your body change because you are using a facial cream). The best thing to prevent aging, as we all know, is to use sunscreen to prevent sun damage to skin, anything else is just a "booster" really to improve the appearance rather than stop aging (its going to happen ladies, like it or not, and most of the time, its in your genes. So short of botox etc, there's not alot you can do about it). Laughing
Having said that, a close family friend now in her late 70's with just gorgeous skin told me she began her skincare when she was 16 with the good old cashmere bouquet (a cleanser and moisturiser), and continued throughout her life with various products (she worked for Estee Lauder for a while - before it was bought out). She felt it was often enough to just "look after" your skin and acknowledge it either with moisture, sunscreen or basic treatments - even massage.
So there you go!!!
HTH!! Cool

By 'using moisturiser' I wasn't referring to the production of collagen or stopping it. when I was young I was always being told to use moisturiser, like it was some anti-aging drug. I'm referring to the production of natural oil - if you moisturise and you don't need it - yes it can stop your skin producing as much oil and make your skin dry. I get that even now, using oily sunscreens. It upsets the natural balance of my skin.

Hey Molly!
I know what you meant, I was actually responding to the initial question of skin becoming dependent on anti-aging products like wrinkle creams etc - many apologies if it sounded like I was huff, huffing at your response, I was not at all..... Embarassed
