Hi all,
I recently became allergic to eye makeup and am wondering if anyone has the same problem and knows of hypo allergenic makeup I can use.
When I put on mascara/eye shadow/eye liner, my eyelids swell up and get really red, itchy and scaley for about a week. Needless to say I'm pretty upset, I really loved putting on mascara and eye liner to enhance my eyes. I don't know what ingredient specifically I'm allergic to, but I do know that I'm allergic to pretty much all my eye makeup (I've been testing them out with bad results). However, I'm not allergic to concealer which I use around my eyes (on dark circles underneath and in corner of eye).
Has anyone here had similar allergies? Any idea what ingredients in the eye makeup could be causing the allergies?
Are there particular brands of make up that I might be able to use? I'm thinking of trying Aveda, Dr Haushka, Lavera, maybe Almay.

I´ve recently developed a similar allergy. Looks like it´s mostly talc and bismuth with me, so mineral eyemakeup without bismuth seems to be working.
I´ve been ordering samples from several MMU brands, so I´ll have quite a stash for a while, to last me while figuring out if there´s anything else I react to.
As for mascara, I´ve been able to wear Dr Hauschka and Blinc Kiss Me.

Sharkbait, thanks for responding. There is hope then! Guess having this allergy is not that common.
Just wondering: How did you find out what you were allergic to? Did you go to an allergist? And what MMU brands have you been ordering from?
I'm going out to get those mascaras today! |

divasupreem - you may want to try Longcils Boncza Cake Mascara. The EWG report rated it as being one of the safest mascaras.
There are very few ingredients so this hopefully will work for you. If you decide to try it please post a review. HTH  |

Divasupreem: I basically guessed which ingredients it would be most likely to react to, and talc is present i almost all "conventional" (eye) cosmetics. I had some MMU eye shadows lying around, and the ones without bismuth worked. I´m not sure if an allergist would help, but it´s certainly less expensive to order a few samples from MMU brands. (That is - untill you´re an addict.) I´ve had great success with Alima, but I guess all bismuth free brands could work.
As for the mascaras, Dr Hauschka was guesswork (I figured the ingredient list looked ok, and went with it) while the Blinc was the only one of my mascaras I could still use at the time. I´m still not certain which ingredients I have problems with, but it´s seems to have narrowed down to these two, possibly with the addition of some fillers or colours.

I found my eyelids got itchy when my mascara was a bit old. They say you should keep changing it every 2 months or so and I kept my stuff for ages (I found it got better the older it was!!)
Anyway, now I don't use it because I find it gives me more grief than it's worth.

Oh can I relate to that! When it happened to me, I ended up with swollen shut eyes, cakey gunk all over them and they cracked and bled a bit.. It happened so fast, I didn't know what was going on.. I think I changed to Almay? I had to find a shadow base that was hypo allergenic and new mascara.. To this day I have to be so careful..
I've found I can wear Physicians Formula E/S with no problem and also Milani, without a base if I forget.. I use L'Oreal mascara with no problem.. I hope they never discontinue that, because it's just awful {not to mention costly} to try to find one I can use...
There seems to be no real rhyme or reason to what I will or won't react to... I tend not to do a lot of experimenting.. When I find something I like and it works, I just stick with it...
