Microdermabrasian question

So far I've had 4 professional microdermabrasions in a series of 6. After the first 2 I was liking them, but now after 4 and seeing only the sublest of results, I've decided I'm not too impressed. I have to say I was hoping for more noticeable results. Also could be my imagination, my skin is looking kind of papery/thin.

I'm wondering if I should even continue to get the 5th and 6th microderms to complete the process...will it make any difference? Is it essential to complete the process in order to see the full results?

I'd love to hear from others who have been through a full series of microderms...

I'm interested in this too. When I bought my Ultraceuticals Eventone Serum (or whatever it's called) the lady said that it would help me, but it would take a long while. She said what I really needed was Microdermabrasions and I needed the full set of six.

I've read here that they can cause cappillaries and stuff, anyone have any comment on that? I have a couple of pock marks, but to be honest I'm not that overly worried about them, they've been there for years. Yes, I was a picker, still am to a degree. I'm liking my results with the Vitamin C cream and the eventone.

I don't want all my skin ground away or getting cappilaries. I do have some cappilary action right round my nose, not that visible, where your nose joins your face. So perhaps I might be prone to it.

Sorry to hijack the thread. It seems you did get some good initial benefits though? I guess there's only so much that can be done. I think I'd be almost certain that microdermabrasion would not get rid of my pock marks, I have two or three and they are definately very there.

I recently finished a series of 6 microdermabrasions. I had them done (as per the advice of the esthetician) approx. 2 weeks apart. I tried them out because I ran across an ad--6 for $350.0--and I figured it wouldn't be such a drastic financial loss if I didn't see any results. I noticed that one or two days after each treatment I would get a couple of big cystic acne spots on my face. Maybe the process was bringing up the "gunk"? I'm not positive, but since it happened every time, like clockwork, I think it was brought on by the treatments. I liked my skin the same day of the treatment, but it seemed like the next day I was back to status quo. It took about 5 sessions before I saw any results at all. After the series of six, I decided I saw some minimal results (my skin is a little smoother and clearer), but I really started liking the idea of getting them done and feeling like I'm taking care of my skin, plus the facial part of the microderm is very relaxing. I read somewhere that some people need to get 10-12 done before they see results, and since I have rather cruddy skin (cystic acne spots and hyperpigmentation), I decided I will try a few more to see if I should continue getting them or not.

I've had a couple, but they've always been a few months apart which maybe isn't very effective. I've always liked my skin initally afterwards, but after a few days it does feel like it gets pretty much back to normal.

The last one I had I was alittle disappointed. It felt like it was over too quickly and she didn't seem as thorough as the other person I had been to see.

You mention your skin seeming thinner ... I was worried about this! I never noticed it myself (but then again, I only had them occassionally) but I thought I read somewhere, perhaps here or maybe somewhere else, about it thinning your skin over time? When I read that I got worried and wasn't sure if I should have another one down the road.

What does everyone else think? Do they thin your skin over time?

I've had one session of microdermabrasion done before and noticed nothing but it's because i need several sessions before seeing results. I cant justify spending $100+ per session Confused

Microdermabrasion always sounded like a huge ordeal to me..I guess I didn't understand it's a pretty run of the mill, low-risk dermalogical procedure and that spas/derms perform so many it's routine for them. Because the process was so inflated in my mind (and because the cost is high!), I expected the results to be more dramatic. I'm not saying I see no results at all, it's just not the change I was hoping for. My skin problems are still there. My skin just looks a little smoother.

Starkers -- I have pock marks, too. They are pretty shallow and not a HUGE deal, but I'm not a fan of them. I've noticed some improvement with them with the microdermabrasions. They are by no means gone, but they seem less harsh and therefore my skin looks a little less harsh. My esthetician told me that the microdermabrasions would eliminate the scars entirely, but I don't know if I trust that claim. I'll see what happens when I'm done with the series, and report back here.

Moonstarr -- Like I said, I think the whole "skin getting thinner" thing is in my head just because I'm paranoid. I don't really think that's a real side effect...although I guess it couldn't hurt to research it.

No. My hyperpigmentation has actually been getting worse now that the weather has been getting better. The more the sun shines, the more my brown spots spread. I use sunscreen, but the sun spots along my jawline are getting worse day by day now that summer's on the way. Unfortunately the microdermabrasion didn't help with that issue one single bit. Sad

just like most of the ladies in here, I also do not see dramatic result. But then again, the say you need at least 6 treatments. I only had 2 so far. I did not get breakouts after treatment. Just redness on my acnes scars (the esthetician said that she did spot treatment on top of microderming the whole face). The redness is gone after a couple of days. So, its no big deal really.
my impression after 2 treatments: No it does not reduce acne scars. My face is now has even tone, but I started using super serum and bio cellular serum, so maybe this even skin tone might not eve be from the microderm.

I agree with BCgirl. I dont think I can justify spending 100/session.

I do think I'm going to go ahead and finish the series and see what happens. I would never say that they are making NO difference, but I think I just imagined microdermabrasion was a bigger deal than it actually is. In reality, it is a fairly run-of-the-mill skin treatment that has become almost as popular as, like, getting your nails done. Before I got it, I was apprehensive, almost like I was anticipating SURGERY...and it's just nothing like that at all. So I believe my expectations were pretty inflated.

Starkers: I also have pock marks. They are fairly shallow and not a huge deal, but I don't like them. The microderms ARE helping with those somewhat. My skin looks smoother and the scars are not as harsh. However, they're definitely still there. My esthetician claims that the microderms will eliminate the pock marks entirely, but I don't know whether to believe that claim. I'll report back later.

Moonstarr: As far as the skin thinning issue, I think I'm just really paranoid about it and it's all in my head. Actually I don't think it's a valid concern...though I guess it wouldn't hurt to do more research.

I'd also like to add one concern I'm having.

This wasn't an issue with the first 3 microderms, but after the 4th one (which was this past Tuesday), my skin has been VERY dry, the type of dry no amount of moisturizing can help with. My skin feels entirely stripped of all of its oils. I'm REALLY hoping things get back to normal soon, or that this sandpapery layer sheds to reveal a soft, bright layer.

Just wondering if anyone else experienced anything of that nature. My esthetician did warn me my skin was going to be dry.

I never got dry skin from the microdermabrasions, but I have very oily skin to begin with. I don't even think they helped cut down on oil production. I get that wicked "shine" a couple of hours after cleansing. Mad

My esthetician refused to do microdermabrasion for me as it's spring, going into summer. She told me for it to have positive effects, it must be done weekly for at least 6 sessions and stay out of the sun. She advise me to hold back till winter. She is also skeptical with the home microdermabrasion kits as she claims that we may do more harm than good when we don't know how to do it properly... oh well... dunno... guess she is just kind enough to ask me to hold off till winter (which is at least 7 months away :P)

Bridget: my skin did get very dry after microderm. The kind of dryness that even if yu put a lot of moisturizer, it still feels and looks dry. My skin is dry to begin with, so I kinda expect this to happen. If you have normal/oily skin and this is happening to you, maybe you should space out the interval of the microderm.
let us know how your skin is doing now.

Hi - I've gone thru 2 microderm packages of 6 each. My purpose in having them was to reduce a scar I have on my forehead, as a result of an auto accident. I did experience some dry skin about mid-course thru the treatment package. I addressed that dryness with jojoba oil and emu oil. It did take several months AFTER the treatment packages for me to really see the results of the microderm treatments.

Thanks for asking. After about 5 days and excessive use of moisturizers and aloe, my skin finally seemed to get back to normal.

I still don't know how sold I am on the microderms, though. My skin is looking good but not great, and I am genuinely disappointed to see no progress with my crow's feet. I've got two more to go, and I'm hoping I haven't just completely wasted my money.

tmeyer66, it's interesting that you said your results showed up a few MONTHS after the treatments. Is that typical?

i completed a full series of 6 microdermabrasions and was happy with the results but not satisfied. so i did maintenance sessions for another year. i guess it depends wat results you are seeing. i saw an improvement which is why i stuck with it but for sure my skin is still far from perfect and i think i need something stronger than microd.

For me, my scar was visibly reduced. Perhaps it took the *months* to see the results, because it was a different type of scar, as opposed to an acne scar?

I'm glad I did it. If you are real close to me -you can see it, but if you are a *normal* distance, the scar isn't visible.

I had about 4 sessions of microderbrasion at my facialist and I could see result even after the first session. However, my skin became very thin and sensitive. So I stopped for a while and it's better to do it in the winter when the UV is not as strong. Also once you have done it consequentively for few times, you can spread the session about for longer time. Like at first, I had the microderbrasion every 1 month for 3 months then once every 2 to 3 months. My skin tone became more even and radiant. I could really see a big difference.

I actullay got very good result from micro dermabrasion, I have cogested skin, and blackhead, sometimes have lots pimples, but after 8times, my blackhead is not as much as before and didnt have much pimples now, but during the trt, I feel my skin getting more sensitive than before... Rolling Eyes
