Hi all,
I'm getting my eyebrows "shaped" in about 18 hours and I'm freaking out because I'm afraid of wax. I'm trying to get an "arch" in my eyebrows and the place I'm going to doesn't use tweezers.
I've NEVER had anything on my body waxed before and I'm SO afraid that it'll swell up my eyes because that area is SO sensitive. I know several of you on the forum wax your eyebrows, so could you give me some encouraging words?
How long will the swelling / redness last? Hours, days, weeks? Will it be utterly ridiculous pain? I tweeze my eyebrows usually and the redness lasts for about 45 minutes to an hour (used to last longer when I first started tweezing but I'm really used to the tweezing sensation now).
The idea of hot wax and then PULLING my skin really freaks me out but I think I'll end up appreciating the look. I just need to know everyone's experiences and make sure I am not making a big mistake.

Hi Lisa,
I think you will honestly be fine, and will end up coming back for more because you will love the clean, shapely, look of your arched brows! I get my eyebrows waxed every 2 weeks, and bikini monthly. I can honestly say I look forward to my eyebrow appts., and I practically fall asleep because she does it while I'm lying down. So that right there should tell you that it doesn't hurt at all. As long as you don't use retin-A you should be fine, otherwise the skin will be prone to ripping. Also green hard wax is the best to use for sensitive skin. As far as redness, on me the redness last no longer than 20 minutes. I may not be as sensitive as you though. Good luck, and can't wait to hear about your shapely brows :P |

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement! I really hope that I can make the most of it. I actually don't have a lot of eyebrow to work with but hopefully we can figure something out (perhaps I need to "re-grow" some of the eyebrows that I usually tweeze). Hopefully they'll be gentle with me.

Hi Lisa,
Don't stress about it. It's a quick process and you'll love the smooth result. I'm pretty much like Thoughtcrime with redness, about 20 minutes and it's all gone. I don't usually get any swelling either.
Btw, I haven't waxed/plucked my brows for a while and they look HORRID at the moment. Like you just pointed out, I decided to have them shaped professionally. But in order to do that I decided that I need to regrow my eyebrows completely. Not an easy thing to do! I've tried a few times already but always caved and waxed or plucked them eventually. Now I practically have to wrestle down my tweezerman-holding-hand to make sure it doesn't come anywhere near my eyebrows when I look in the mirror in the morning. But it'll all be worth it in the end!

Oh I love my girls on this forum.
So it turns out that I don't have much eyebrow to "shape" so the lady asked me to re-grow some of the areas that I usually pluck! I'm in the same boat as you are, Mabsy! Tell me how you are able to wrestle down your tweezerman-hand! I always pluck at the slightest sign of a stray! What am I going to do! Won't it look awful? What will people think? "Wow, this girl's eyebrows are really all over the place!" AUGH!
Oh well, so I missed the waxing sensation but I will need a lot of willpower to grow out the rest of my eyebrows!

| The growing out part is the one thing that sucks with waxing. So after 2 weeks my brows are looking pretty straggly, but I try to suck it up and I don't ever tweeze. Most etheticians don't like it when you tweeze in between wax sessions, and mine can always tell the few times I went to someone else, because the "work" is different. Chances are if you're growing out your eyebrows then you're not hairy and all over the place, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. No one will notice the stray hairs but you, and the estetician will thank you for it because she'll have more to work with. Can't wait to hear about your results! I believe there are also places that professionally shape your brows by tweezing if you don't like waxing. But honestly, after you grow out your brows, they should look perfect (with no need to do a tweeze touch-up) for about 2 weeks. |

Hi Ladies,
Growing out your eyebrows is the most fun especially when you want to start from scratch and get a brand new arch, but it's the having to put up with the feral looking strays that's the most annoying part as you can't wear eyeshadow for the most part ! It's so tempting to not pluck and trim. But I really love the smooth finish after I've had the waxing done, it really makes a difference, since even the finest, invisible hairs are removed.
Thoughtcrime, I think I'm going to schedule up my appointments in advance like you, that way I have something to look forward to and be more 'disciplined'. I wish I could fly your aesthetician here if she can get you relaxed like that for the treatment.  Aestheticians are a little bit like hairdressers, they can always tell when their work has been done over by someone else !

Hi girls,
Can I ask you how long it usually takes to grow your stray eyebrows out? Mine will be particularly annoying because I tweeze ABOVE my eyebrows . . . so that area is the WORST in terms of straggly-ness.
So I guess my two questions are:
1) How long do you usually let them grow out? and
2) How MUCH do you usually let them grow? Do they want a big bushel of stray hair or just a few here and there? I don't want to go and have them tell me that I need to "grow some more." Ha ha ha. What an interesting topic this is

| Well, I'm trying to "fully" regrow mine. I've been waxing and tweezing for so long that it might actually take me a while to do that. I think I haven't plucked for almost a month now, probably about two or three weeks to go..... I really *really* hate it. It just looks really bad, and I feel like saying to other people "look I KNOW how my eyebrows look, I'm trying to grow them out ok?" before they even look at me. And Summertimegirl is right, it makes it really hard to wear eyeshadow. Grrrr! The only thing that makes me put the Tweezerman down is the fact that I know it will *so* be worth it in the end! Well it'd better be! I want to get them professionally shaped and my expectations are high! |

I get my eyebrows reshaped, waxed and tweezed around once a month. I tweeze any stray hairs myself that appear between waxings.
I find the wax really relaxing - I'm another one who will practically fall asleep!
I am going to get mine done tomorrow, and I'm thinking of booking in for a manicure at the same time. |

Hi Lisa,
It took me a good 2 months to fully grow out my eyebrows but it was so worth it when I finally had them reshaped. I look at photos where I had really thin eyebrows and I must say I much prefer me with thicker, shapely brows as it looks healthier and somehow your eyes appear bigger eyes as they perfectly frame them.
In the waiting-n-growing out period, there's no harm in neatening the stray 'bushel' (I laughed out loud when I read that !) by plucking the hairs that grow around your eyes, what's important is that you leave the main growth outlining the shape of your eyebrow alone. It's great when you can see your eyebrows taking shape again, it is truly worth waiting out the time until they're reshaped ! 
I don't ever pluck the tops of my eyebrows, only below my arch, as it's easier to manipulate the shape of your brows from beneath the arch. The peaks on the tops actually give an eye-opening arch to the brows and I trim mine down when they grow longish.
Mabsy, it will be really worth it in the end ! I did not like my thin eyebrows at all, apart from looking over-plucked, too much maintenance !

I don't know where you all live, but I highly recommend a process called threading. If there is an indian beauty salon near you - you must try it!!!!!
It's an ancient practice even used by Cleopatra. It gives an incredibly natural curvy arch shape that waxing or tweezing just can't compare to. The regrowth is lighter than tweezing, so it's recommended not to tweeze in between. Your hair will not grow back thick.
I did this in Los Angeles, and was so annoyed because it got discovered by famous people like Madonna and Naomi Campbell. It was written up in famous magazines. After that, my wait was over 1 hour long for eyebrow threading because it was so filled with local people wanting to try it. The lines had gotten better because they met the demand with a bigger salon and more technicians.
If it's available near you - I urge you to try it. YOu won't regret it. The techs twist a thread and it pulls each hair out quickly in a graceful sweep. It is a little painful but oh so worth it.
I live in an area now with no salon like this, and now hate my eyebrows because waxing just doesn't give me the natural curvy shape that frames my face. They make it too thick or too thin and the arches are not natural. |

I also love the threading process and I have it done on my upper and lower lip every 3 weeks by my sister. I agree with you that it's the best and most accurate method of hair removal, however apart from time, I don't think I could trust her on my eyebrow arching only because the shaping part is more specific. :P On my lips, I prefer the threading process to waxing, at least you're guarranteed that ALL the hairs will be removed and the result is the smoothess hairless skin. I've had waxing done where the tech had to follow up with a bit of tweezing and still left the roots behind !  Waxing and tweezing do not compare !
Unfortunately, there are no known salons here in Sydney that I know of that features this process.  I suppose they can't charge a great deal for a single length of thread and training might be a bit tricky :P I'm sure the Indian community in Sydney would still use this method as would the south-east Asian where this is a common method of hair removal. I had no idea that this has really taken off in the States and had hit the celebrity market ! If only I can do it on myself, I would save megabucks on hair removal each year !!

Hmmm.... I forgot all about threading! I've never had it done but I would really like to. I might do some research on some recommended places in Brisbane.

Wow Mabsy, I can't believe you actually found some places that do the threading in Sydney-- THANKS !! I hope you're able to locate a place in Brissie too !
I've heard the Skin & Tonic place is really good for eyebrow shaping.
I will have to give the Weena place (what a name ! ) in Chatswood, a try this weekend-- just the upper and lower lips and see how they go. I'm excited !
Thoughtcrime I hope you get a chance to experience threading once, just to see how it works, you'll find it also relaxing. It's different to waxing of course, but once you get past the initial stage of having the first few lines of hair weaved off it's very enjoyable. And you'll end up with the baby-smooth face.

Summertimegirl - did u ever try that threading place that Mabsy found for you - wow can't believe she found it so quick. I just moved to a new area and have not been able to find an indian beauty salon. Then I finally resorted to the random act of asking an indian lady walking into an indian grocery store. She laughed when I asked her because she had just come from the lady's house that threads her eyebrows. What luck!!!! Many indian ladies do beauty treatments like threading, waxing, etc from the home. I am sooooo looking forward to this!!
So in Sydney they're charging $25 for eyebrow threading? It usually costs me $8 LOL. I would easily pay $25 if I had to though.
I know we were discussing this months ago, but I've been moving and out of commission for a while. |

doesnt waxing overtime cause the skin in that area to sag? wel so i read somewhere cant remeber.
I think one off for example first time to get some shapeing is ok but doing it often may cause problems? |

| I hate tweezing because it hurts like you know what. I love Waxing because it is so quick and long lasting with very little pain. Most places put on a soothing cream afterwards to limit the redness or swelling. I practically go to sleep during the process! |
