I always wonder if preservative will affect the quality of skin products. As some brands emphasize preservative free, which they claims is better than those with preservative. Is it really the case?
And how about product expiry date? I've got a Sheseido sunscreen with SPF 50 which was bought 3 years ago and I'm still using it. I didn't keep the box so I don't know the expiry. Should I buy a new one or can I still use it? |

I'm not too sure about the preservatives in skin care products. I would assume that preservatives would help the products last longer, so maybe the ones without might have a shorter shelf life. I'm not sure if products without would be better than products with.
As for sunscreen, on my sunscreens they usually have an expiry date of about a year I think, maybe a year and half. If yours is three years old, I think it might have passed expiry, so I would buy a new one to use as it's probably not as effective any longer. |

As for preservatives affecting the quality of the product.. I think the main issue for preservatives is their safety and possible irritations they might cause.
I've always thought something with active ingredients should be used up faster anyway and use of a preservative would nullify any activeness.
Sometimes you can find the batch number and expiry date of the product on the very top of the upside down tube, or just imprinted on the bottom of the bottle. I would just use a sunscreen for a year or so, it may lose all effectiveness after that. |

Thanks Moonstarr and Miranets, I think I should throw my sunscreen right away... 
Now I have problem in finding another sunscreen. There are quite a lot of products to choose from. My beautician said at least SPF30 is needed in Canada.
My situation is...I have dry skin, very pale and have some freckle.  ...Is it enough to get a moisturizer with SPF15 or do I need a sunscreen with SPF30+??? Can any sunscreen be applied around the eye contour? which brand would you gals recommend? |

I've read something like this ... the SPF tells you how long you can stay in the sun before burning. For instance, if you usually would burn in the sun after 20 minutes, the SPF15 sunscreen would offer you 15x more protection before you'd need to reapply it, so 5 hours. An SPF of 30 would offer longer protection. I read this on different sites on the internet, so if I'm wrong, hopefully someone will correct me.
I've read the minimum you should wear is SPF15. I wear a 15 to work in the morning and then make sure to reapply it before I leave work (since by that time it would have lost its effectiveness). If I was going to be out in the sun alot one day, I would use a higher SPF so I'd be covered longer without having to reapply so frequently.
All my sunscreens usually said to avoid getting it near the eye area, but I know you can buy eye creams with SPF. I use the Dermalogica Sheer Moisture Tint SPF15 which I do bring up about half way to my eye (even though I think they say not to and I've never had a problem). Then I use their Solar Defense Booster SPF30 if I'm going to be outside for a while.
As for brands, I'm really happy with the Dermalogica Sheer Moisture Tint SPF15. When I use the booster is does make my skin alittle more shiny, so it might be good to use on your dry skin. I think Shiesedo has some pretty good sunscreens. I'm sure you'll get lots of recs from everyone on here as well. |

| I remembered someone in this forum has said that the preservative can help to prevent the bacterial growth in the skincare products. |
