If you're like me, no matter how many face cleansers you have, you're always on the lookout for something better. I have to be careful with cleansers, tho, because I need something that will take off my make up, sunscreen, and those annoying dead skin cells that clog my pores, BUT I also need something that won't be too harsh or aggravate my poor sensitive skin. Luckily, I found a face soap that fits the bill: Chidoriya Adzuki and Brown Sugar Face Soap.

I admit, I approached this soap with a fair amount of trepidation. After all, I had always been taught to avoid bars like the plague, because they were usually full of fillers that would clog your pores and cheap ingredients like tallow. Still, I was lured in by the siren song of quality ingredients like brown sugar, camellia oil, and almond oil, AND by the fact that it is 100% paraben and petroleum free!

When I was first lathering up with this soap, I definitely got a kind of weird feeling (bar lather feels different from the gel/cream cleaners I usually use), and I thought "Oh no! What have I done to my poor face!!!" But after I rinsed and dried my face, I couldn't believe how smooth and soft it felt, and yes, almost glowing! Still, I wasn't about to be swayed that easily (after all, maybe it was just all the green tea I had been drinking all day that had given my skin such a boost, right?), so I kept using it for a couple weeks to really get a feel for it. Well, a couple weeks later and I'm still impressed. Not only does it make my face soft and smooth, but I swear it's been helping to fade my acne scars! (Maybe it's the almond oil??)

Here's a description of the soap from the Chidoriya website:
Japanese Pure Camellia Oil Based
"Azuki Micrograins and Brown Sugar Facial Soap" combining 100% pure extremely fine
Azuki Red Bean Micrograins and Organic Brown Sugar. Camellia Oil leaves skin soft and moisturized while Azuki Micrograins helping to dissolves pore clogging oil and dulling surface flakes. Brown Sugar's natural quality smooths your skin's texture. Azuki(red bean) powder has been used as a face wash in Japan for centuries and it is still popular today. This traditional poured and cured processed soap last nearly twice as long as most mass market bars. Mixed in small batches and aged in the special curing room for nearly a month. Our special soapmaking process removes excess alkali from the soap, a major irritant to sensitive skin. Never tight or dry.

And, here's a list of ingredients taken from the package:
palm oil, vegetable glycerin, sweet almond oil, distilled water, grapefruit seed extract, black sugar, camellia oil, adzuki micrograins.

Chidoriya also has a soap that is very similar to this formulation, but instead of sugar and adzuki it contains green tea and barley, and it is suggested for skin with active acne. I have a sample of it and have been using it on my broken out days, and I really like it as well!

This soap can be purchased at chidoriyaworld.com for $13, which is a bargain IMO since it seems to last forever! You can also request samples of other interesting products with your order if there are other chidoriya products you want to try. (That's how I test-drove the green tea soap as well.)

Liz I have a sample of this that I have let sit in my bathroom cabinet because I didn't think that it would be appropriate for my sensitive skin. Now you are tempting my to try it! Do you use this everyday or just a few times a week? Do you experience any irritation at all from this? Does it feel grainy or not? The green tea one sounds nice too, I might have to request a sample of that!

LOL, I know how you feel, Theresa! I can't tell you how many samples I have sitting around that I'm curious about but I'm too scared to try for fear of my skin blowing up! But, I'm happy to report that I experienced no irritation at all. The bar of soap itself feels just a bit grainy, but the lather that ends up on your face is very soft and not grainy at all, so it's fine to use it even before exfoliating with an aspirin mask, etc. I've been using it almost every day (only once a day tho--- in the morning I usually use a cream cleanser), so far so good! HTH!

Thanks Liz. I am going to give this a try one of these days. I am trying other products right now so I want to wait before trialing something else. This is my other problem I know that it is best to try only one new product at a time but sometimes it is hard to do that. Although I will admit I have been very good with this lately. Smile

I've never heard of Chidoriya. Is it a Japanese brand or just a foreign brand using Japanese bases?

tiger_tim I am not sure about this. The oil blotting papers that I buy from them are made in Japan and I know that their camellia oil is imported from japan but the lip balms and soaps that I have ordered say made in USA. Here's the website if you want to take a look:

Very nice and natural products though regardless of whether they are a Japanese brand or not!

OK, the adzuki scrub and the nightingale droppings scrub/wash I have seen here in Japan. I believe they now sell this brand in Ginza too.

Theresa,

Please post a review after you have tried a sample. I am always looking for something that can clean my sensitive skin without drying it out. I don't know what to do with all the cleansers in my reject pile Laughing

mtview I will be sure to post a review after I try this. I know what you mean about the reject pile. I have two cleansers in my shower now that are either too drying or somewhat irritating. I try to give cleansers a chance by say using them only a few times a week or so but oftentimes I just end throwing them away. I have a feeling that these two cleansers will eventually find their way to my niece or sister. I have been trying to get my husband to use one (the LRP Toleriane Foaming Cleanser which has no fragrance at all) but he is very "I'm reluctant to use anything but soap" so it's hopeless. Right now I have a lot of cleansers that I haven't even tried so I may be doing a lot of reviews in the future. I have been using the Cellcosmet Purifying Gel the past few days as my morning cleanser and I really like that one. It does not dry my skin but leaves it nice and soft without any residue. I have also been using cleansing oils at night as a pre-cleanse so that my face feels pretty clean when I use one of my foaming cleansers and I don't feel like I have to spend a lot of time with cleanser on my face, so this seems to help. This is turning into a long post but in short I really long for the perfect cleanser. Cellcosmet might be it but I will have to see how I feel about that once I start using it at night too.

I will keep you updated!

Thanks Theresa,

I think I will be passing a few bottles to my sister and my mom. I kept a few to use as shaving cream Laughing My skin is very dry, reactive and dermatitis prone. It is so hard to find the perfect non-drying cleanser Crying or Very sad

mtview I don't want to keep replying to your posts but I couldn't resist this one. I have two tubes of Yonka Cream Cleanser that I have never even tried, I got them at half price and bought two because it said that they make a great shaving cream so I figured that if it didn't work for my face I could use it to shave and my money would not be wasted!
