Hi,

I am new here. First of all, I have to say how much I've enjoyed reading many topics in this forum -- everyone is so helpful!

So, here is my question: Is it okay to use a moisturizer after applying retin-a? I know with Green Cream that you aren't supposed to; but how about with retin-a?

Thank you!

You aren't supposed to with any of the retinoids, but some still do. If you must, you are supposed to wait 30 mins after applying the retinoid or until it has completely sunk in. IMO, using a small amount of plain moisturizer mixed in with the retinoid is the same as getting a lower percentage. You are just diluting it which is ok in my book if that's the only way your skin can tolerate it.

I use Emu oil before Retin A so my skin does not dry out.

This is all news to me. Can someone please explain why you can't use a moisturiser with a retin a product and then, if you do, why you would have to wait 30 minutes.

Same here. The 30 minutes I assume is to allow for absorption. I follow my Retinol A with a combo of oils then a night balm.

You can use a moisturizer! But applying a moisturizer right away decreases the penetration of the actives. The longer you wait to apply moisturizer the longer the active of the retinoid will be able to penetrate. That's why most derms say to use a good moisturizer the next morning. This is one reason they came out with Renova after a few years of experimenting with Retin-A. Some ppl simply couldn't take it and needed the emollient added in Renova. Retin-A + Moisturizer = Renova. Tazorac + Moisturizer = Avage. Since Renova & Avage isn't usually covered by health insurance you can just make your own.

Let your skin tell you what to do. You might decide adding a moisturizer right after is best for you, or you may want to wait 30 mins to an hour or decide not to use one at all.

I could use Retin-A .1% with no problems but I could not use Tazorac .1% all over my face, just spot treat. I was going to get .05% Tazorac. Maybe, I could try mixing Tazorac .1% with moisturizer to reduce the strength and not have to get a new tube.

I saw some posts about buffering Retin-A with eye cream for the eye areas and I have been doing that two to three times a week and it seems to work well for me. Retin-A does not give me any redness any more, but I think it will take longer time to see good results.

Some say mixing with couple of drops of hyaluronic acid works well.

I never could tolerate .1% Tazorac either except for sometimes during the summer months. Other times when I am out of .05% I just mix a bland moisturizer with .1% and it's ok. With .05% Tazorac I get no irritation whatsoever.

Thanks everyone but I am still not convinced about the moisturiser applied straight after decreasing the effect of the actives. It just seems to me that if you can mix Retin A with moisturiser and apply then that is probably no different to applying a moisturiser straight after. I guess only the manufacturers might know.

bushy,

You can probably email the manufacturer to get the scientific answer. I believe I read about the wait on the phamplet that came with my retinoid.

mtview, I have sent an email but have not received a reply as yet. The only info I have ever seen relates to waiting 20 to 30 minutes after washing your face to ensure it is dry although I think this does not apply to Retin-A Micro. As most retin products are only such a small percentage like .025 or .05 etc then the rest is filled up with other ingredients so I can't see why another blob of moisturiser on top would do any harm.

My derm is the one that verbally told me to try using the retinoid without any moisturizer on top. She said if it was too irritating like that, then by all means to use the moisturizer but try to wait as long as I could after my Tazorac to apply it to give it time to absorb. I assumed this was standard because ppl on MUA say the same thing. She even gave me instructions on how to use Tazorac for only a few minutes each day by washing it off after a certain period of time and increasing that time daily until I could tolerate it left on all night.

I can definitely see an increase in irritation when I use it alone so I think she might be right on the absorption. Probably all derms have their own favorite method of application though.

Thanks phredd4! It's a great idea! I'll try that. I guess I could try to dilute more and use on my neck too. I could never use retinoid on my neck. My face now looks much brighter than my neck since I can only use it on my face.

Same with me! It tears my neck up. You'd think it would be more tolerable there than on your face.

My face could tolerate almost anything but my neck couldn't. I used to think it's the other way around. When I first started on retinoid, my face was ok but my neck was red even though I didn't apply it there. I had to slather moisturizer on the neck so it would not get red. The skin tone on my face and neck are different now! I am not sure how I could make my neck look brighter like my face if it could not tolerate retinoid and high % AHA! Sad

Any suggestions for a good moisturizer for combo skin? Just started using Retin-A micro last week and I'm flaking and peeling like no tomorrow! I didn't expect this to happen at all, used plain old Retin-A cream a long time ago without much side effect. At least I know its working this time around....

I have been using RetinA for about 20 years, and have had no problem using an eye cream and night cream over it. I don't wait more than a few minutes. I also don't always add the creams on top, only when I am feeling a little too dry.

For those of you that use RA around the eyes; can you tell me the routine? What strength, mixed with anything else, how often, etc?

No, don't use anything over it if you want to get the full benefits. I can't understand how and why people want to get around how it needs to be used. I am very old school about it (also a 20 year user) and it abso-friggin-lutely will give you faster results when used straight up!

Tam was a new member in May 2006. To date she has been writing 1109 posts. If you look at your first post, it will be counted as the total number of posts you have been posting. All your posts will have the same number. (Hope that was clear enough). Smile

Anyway, does the directions on the Retin-A package say that you should not apply moisturizer on top?

Hi Tazorac users. I am tagging on an odd post, hopefully those who are using Tazorac will read and respond. Here is my question: I have used Tazorac in the past (it has been a while now) so I can not remember if I liked the results or just moved on for some other reason, but lately I am really hating my skin (for about 5 months now), clogged pores, small breakouts (daily about 5-6) everyday..so I am thinking about going back to Tazorac (or my friends suggested Differin-not sure which to try), so I am using a retinol based product neutragena Night Cream, which I like....but can I also use Tazorac with it? I have been using the Neutragena for quite sometime now, so my skin is used to it. I was using a BP RX after my retinol and a user said NO NO NO, I am cancelling them out....thoughts on layering Retinol and Tazorac?
