I love Saturday cooking shows on PBS... I find them soothing after a long week and I have a theory that if I watch them enough, some day I'll be able to chop vegetables without needing a bandaid. It's been about 10 years now.... Rolling Eyes

Anyway, one of the chefs was slicing cucumber and suggested using any left-overs on the eyes to reduce puffiness. She cautioned, however, that cucumber can be very drying on the skin, but didn't mention if the drying was instantaneous or after repeated use. I'm using a cucumber and aloe gel from St. Ives on my eyes every few days to combat puffiness caused by allergies, but haven't noticed any dryness. But of course, I'm paranoid now.

Any thoughts on whether cucumber is really drying and, if so, does it have to be pure cucumber or can solutions containing cucumber also dry the skin?

i regularly put a slice of cucumber to cover each eye after night out for 10-15 mins and do not dry my skin. very refreshing indeed. Just get fresh cucumber for extra fresh feeling. It is quite cooling too.

I'm by no means an expert, but I will chime in with the fact that cucumber is a (mild) diuretic. I guess that if it flushes water out of your system when eaten that it has the same effect on the skin? I would think that it wouldn't have a drying effect unless you used it repeatedly and consistently. A product with cucumber as an ingredient won't likely dry you out since it probably has a small percentage of cucumber in it compared to other, moisturizing ingredients. It's also processed which likely reduces any drying effect.

she probably meant if you used the fresh cucumber straight to your skin. I have tried cucumber myself for my undereye for puffiness and a little fine line and i thought it made it worse, so i never did it again.
