I don't get it. I just don't get it. I am 32 and all my life my skin has been....normal. Sensitive but didn't really break out and was pretty clear unless I messed with it (i.e, squeezing).
Now it seems in the last few months it has been horrible. Especially my forehead. It will die down to being okay and then lo' and behold, I look and its all messed up again. I just recently broke out on my forehead and I'm wondering if its because I was using this cleanser I got (LacHydrin or something?) for free from the laser/cosmetic surgery place and I usually use nothing, just water.
I also started using La Roche Posay sunscreen every day on my forehead.
The cleanser I noticed was really, really drying, could that have produced more oils on my forehead therefore making it break out?
I'm at a loss here and I just want to cry. It seems every time I put something on my face other than water, my skin reacts badly.
I'm so depressed about it |

Just as a start, others will chime in, but the La Roche Posay is greasy-it breaks me out & I stopped breaking out years ago. Dosen't it make your skin feel greasy...I don't know what else you're using but I would look at this first & yes stop with the over drying cleanser & use something gentle like Cetaphil for now.
I'm not sure about this but I think LacHydryn is an exfoliating cleanser which may not be ideal for sensitive skin...isn't there lactic acid in it? |

Actually I'm not sure if it's LacHydrin, I will double check the name. I know its Lac something. But anyways, I shouldn't have trusted that lady from the laser surgery who gave me it.
As for La Roche Posay, I actually didn't feel it was greasy and I thought it wasn't making me break out. I don't know, another culprit is because I changed conditioners and my forehead seems to only stay clear when I use Aveda. So those are three suspected culprits that I'm going to stop for a bit and hope for the best.
I'm just scared that this is how my skin is always going to be now that I'm in my 30s. |

Fear not, Pele! We'll get that recalcitrant skin under control!! First things first, are we talking about run-of-the-mill breakouts, or really out of control inflamed ones?
I think the first step part of your routine to adjust should be your cleanser--- if you are feeling consistently tight afterwards, it's probably sending your poor oil glands into over drive. Have you ever tried DHCC? What about a mild cleanser, followed by DHCC to start normalizing your skin again? Personally I would advise against cetaphil since the darn stuff irritates my skin and doesn't even remove my make up completely. Maybe you could try Beauty Without Cruelty's Herbal Cleansing Cream, or Dr. Hauschka's Cleansing Milk? Next, what kind of toner are you using? I can't say enough good things about the Dr. H toner--- it makes my skin look AMAZING, and keeps break outs away. Also, have you considered an O2 serum to keep zit-causing bacteria under control? The PSF works like a miracle, but it's $$$ so you might try the Zenbiotic version at Zenbiotic.com... it's only $14 and works quite well, in my experience. Are you using an acne serum like Juice Beauty's acne serum? Finally, what about masks or peels? Ye Olde Aspirin Mask is a great place to start...
Sorry to overwhelm you... just wanted to make sure I covered all the bases. HTH!! |

yay for help!
These are run-of-the-mill breakouts where I will get a few whiteheads and then all of a sudden there will just be more and blackheads all around the same area. It is not cystic acne by any means. But, squeezing any whiteheads is leading to scarring now.
Sometimes I think the aspirin mask makes it worse? I don't know.
For cleanser - I usually use nothing, just water. I am afraid to try DHCC. I have used Cetaphil in the past and it eventually did the same thing that is happening now. I hate to say it, but anything but water eventually starts making me break out.
For toner - nothing, I have never used toner.
For O2 serum, never tried, don't even know what it is! lol.
For masks/peels - I really do want to try Juice Beauty. I use nothing now.
Basically, I use nothing on my face, just moisturizer and now sunscreen. And the aspirin mask which I found helped with my blackheads and pore size. Oh, and have been using ROC fast acting gel for about two weeks. I posted about scarring too as I notice I have been scarring now all the time, so I'm taking Vitamin E and C every day as Vitamin E oil made me break out.
I'm just at a loss as per the "only thing not making me break out but water" debacle.
EDIT: I was thinking of trying the Burt's Bees orange cleanser, but now I'm scared to try anything!! |

Pele,
while water may be working for you, it's been shown that it may eventually lead to Rosacea because a specific type of bacteria will proliferate on your skin if you don't wash it with more than just water.
When you use cleansers, do you use a wash cloth to rinse? |

Really? I had no idea.....No, I don't use a wash cloth to rinse. I was thinking of buying a bunch of cheap wash cloths and using a new one to dry my face every day. |

If you're developing irritation after using all cleansers for awhile, it seems to me like you may not be rinsing them off completely.
Buy 3/$1 french terry wash cloths, they do a good job. I have different ones, with different textures, and I alternate them depending on the condition of my skin.
I also use Buf-Puf Gentle sponges every few days, they're great for gentle exfoliation without any added chemicals, just physical action.
Basically, it seems you may not be cleanning your face properly and all the problems are stemming from that. |

Wow! I like that simple routine - it appeals to me. As for Buf-Pufs, I used them once and totally broke out. *sigh*
see?!! my frustration....
I'm going to try the soap and rinsing with washcloth from now on. I really want to be able to try the OCM in the future for my blackhead issues.
Thank you so much everyone!!! I feel like maybe...just maybe....there is hope? |

Just one more note re: wash cloths, it sounded like you're going to toss them away after 1 use. Don't! Just wash them in hot water on Superwash cycle. But yes, use a clean one every day. |

I really like pumaka's suggestions, quite simple. There is hope, don't worry. Just go slow. Start with the best cleanser for you And do find an SLS free shampoo! Hold off on the OCM until your skin clears if you're not getting good results with aspirin masks/salicylic acid, might be ur skin barrier is not good Ur cleansers were probably too harsh (Cetaphil has SLS in them!). Try the cleansers pumaka has suggested in her link. |

I wasn't going to throw them away. It did sound like that didn't it!
And as I'm typing I see joziegrozy's post about SLS - don't know what that is but going to have a look now....
Wow, honestly I am so happy with all your suggestions and feel so much better. THANK YOU! |

SLS = sodium laureth/lauryl sulfate... If they are in ur shampoo and your skin is sensitive to it, they can trickle down to your face and be the cause of ur forehead breakouts They are also found in Cetaphil and other cleansers (for oily ppl) But longterm use of this is really bad I read. Sometimes, people's problems can be caused by their cleansers as they destroy the PH level of the skin (making it too alkali coz of detergents and SLS). So please get a good cleanser that is PH balanced and free from SLS. I usually follow my cleanse with ACV toner to restore the acidity to my skin. Acidity levels keep bacteria away (correct acidity!). |

Vivier hexim is (in my opinion) the most safe soap, I think anyone can use it especially those with acne. Sunscreen wise, that really depends if you tolerate chemical sunscreen like avobenzene. |

So I'm home and checked what the cleanser was, and it's called "LactiCleanse". After much searching I finally found the website and they have absolutely nothing on it except for an email address and pictures of what they sell. I emailed them and asked for the ingredients. I wonder what is in the cleanser? It's a pharmaceutical company.
