My sisters little girl (13) has dry course extremely curly hair and they are killing it. They gob on Infusium so bad (because they say her hair soaks it up) that they eventually use MR CLEAN (not Kidding) to clean it because it starts to smell "sour" from all the build up even though she washes it every couple of days.

I am going to Whole Food for the first time this Tuesday and would like some suggestions for Shampoo & Conditioner. I'm going to try the OCM on her hair with a Biolage Ulta hydrating mask after (suggested on here) but I want to find a good regimine for her. Pureology shampoo has been mentioned as a good one with no sulfate but it is so expensive and my sister has 7 (yes 7) children so she would not be able to continue to afford it and I'm hoping to keep them from continuing to damage her hair. If any body knows a good drugstore or other brand that would be great to. I could probably even try a DIY if there are any out there (that's why I'm going to Whole Foods in the first place to get stuff for the ACV) I've only gotten to page 10 of the DIY.

Her hair is so curly if you straighten it it goes almost to her waist but with the curles it is above the shoulders. They have tried some African American products even though they are white but she said they really coated the hair with a waxy substance. Any help would be appeciated.

Thanks

Hi,

I think your sister should try products from
https://anitagrant.com/index.php

These products got great reviews on the longhair forum. They are organic and amazing on curly hair. Use either the whipped butter or the creamy caffe latte after shampooing - these are leave in conditioners that can be reapplied to both damp or dry hair.

When detangling hair that is dry - spritz the hair with water until just slightly damp and warm up either the butter or latte and work thru to hair ends.

Another important tip is technique - washing the hair in sections helps prevent tangling as well as rinsing in Bragg unfiltered 100% organic apple cider vinegar diluted with water - the scent disappears.

I *highly* recommend the book Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey. My library has it in the teen non-fiction section. I read it upon a friend's recomendation because my daughter has curly hair and I had no clue how to take care of it. I'm now using Devacurl no-poo and one condition for my little girl and her hair looks wonderful.

Here is the devacurl website http://www.devachansalon.com/devachan/devacurl/onlinestore.html
I bought the poducts for my dd from another site where the product was slightly less expensive.

What web site did you find Devacurl on for cheaper? I'd really like to try this for her. She's the only one in the family who needs it so it should last a while. It says to use it once a week. Does that mean to only wash her hair once a week or do I need to find something else for daily use?

Here is the site: http://www.cosmeticmagic.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=62

My dd is four, we only wash her hair once or twice a week. The book recommends either wetting down and going, or wetting in the shower and adding some more conditioner. We don't brush her hair anymore at all. The only time a comb or fingers should be used to untangle curly hair is when it is wet. I just use my fingers when she has the conditioners in, and the knots just come right out. The knots were crazy before we started this.

The book can explain it much better than I. Oh, one other resource- I'm pretty sure that I've seen the curly girl idea discussed on http://www.longhaircommunity.com/index.php?s=ffa89f4bf23f0028221cc8d73adb8b4a

Are you looking for something natural? If so, the Nature's Gate persimmon rose might be good, it's for dry hair, about $9 a bottle.

Another drugstore brand that would keep her hair hydrated would be Neutrogena Triple Moisture, about $6 a bottle. They have a deep treatment she might benefit from too-- definitely use something like that after you clarify because after that it will need to be bombarded with moisture.

Stay away from pantene, herbal essence, aussie... they all leave build up on hair.

I would stay away from any protein as well. if they've been putting infusium on her, she has more than enough. I was just at the stylist yesterday and she told me to stop putting product with protein on my hair becaues it already had enough and was getting crispy.

Wow, the Mr. Clean must be an absolute disaster for her hair - it probably perpetuates the cycle (making the hair dryer and coarser, so they add more product, which builds up, requiring a stronger cleaner, etc.)

I have curly hair, not as curly as your nieces, but quite curly. My current regime is as follows (and has been for about a year): Avalon Organics Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner (Lavender) followed by Aubrey Organics Hair Moisturizing Jelly, and Aubrey Organics B5 Design Gel.

Don't overload the hair - curly hair tends to be more sensitive because of the structure that creates the curls. Also, don't wash it too often. I would shampoo it, twice if necessary, condition it, rinse out the conditioner, squeeze dry the hair, and then apply the Aubrey products. I use about 3 dime-size dollops of each (I work in sections, side, back, side). I use a wide tooth comb in the shower to comb through the conditioner, and then once I have applied the products, I usually comb again with the wide-tooth comb to make sure they are distributed. That is the last time a comb touches my hair. Also, don't wring out the hair, or towel dry it - these can cause breakage and frizziness. Just squeeze out whatever moisture you can before applying post-shower products.

In between washes, I will rinse my hair thoroughly in the shower, condition, and apply more product. I wash my hair about every 4-5 days, and rinse and condition once or twice in between depending on how my hair is feeling.

You may need to give the hair some time to settle into the routine, if it feels greasy or overloaded, obviously wash it sooner, if it feels dry, just rinse and condition it.

Prices: the Avalon products are about 8-9 dollars for 11 oz, the Aubrey products are about 13-14 for 8 oz (these last me for several months at a time).

One last note: in the shower I shampoo and condition my hair, then I leave in the conditioner while I wash, shave my legs, etc, so it has some time to work.

Good luck!

I had the same problem and for me, the tride and true products of choice (and I promise you I've tried them all) is Kerastase. Expensive? Yes but a little goes a long way and it works.

For me, the two products I can't live without is the shampoo for dry, coarse hair, the masque for dry fine hair and the Oleo Relax Serum. The Relax serum is made to help straighten hair although it gives me really pretty waves without being weighed down or goopy.

If I put in mousses or gels, my hair is weighed down and knotted so I skip it and just use this serum - it's unlike anything else I've tried.

A great shampoo for removing build up but not drying out the hair at all is Pureology Purify Shampoo. I nev er use this more than once a week.

Another thing that's really worked for me is to put the serum in and let my hair air dry. When its about 80-90% dry, I twist it up and secure it with a big baret and let it air dry the rest of the way (great to do before you go to bed). WHen I take out the baret, my hair is so soft and wavey and way less frizzy.

I also only wash my hair every 2-3 days.

With curls, less is more - less touching and less products.
