I've been using sunblock faithfully for the past 15 years but it seems as if each year I learn something new about sun protection and I wonder if I'm using effective products. This year I've read about PPD ratings and the debate about the safety of nana particles. I do not want to use chemical sunblocks so I use ones with zinc oxide and/or t. dioxide and also wear a hat when I'm outside during the day. My favorite is sun protection creme from purpleemu. It doesn't have an spf rating but I've never burned or tanned while using it. The owner estimates it to be spf15. The ingredients are: emu oil, shea butter, olive oil, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, camomile, vit. c and e, greem tea. fragrance, vanilla flower. I've also been sampling one from keyes soap that is also natural, uses zinc and is labeled spf 30. I like it but prefer the other. I also tried UV natural which is also 100% natual but so greasy I couldn't stand it.
Any thoughts or opinions about the sun protection creme from purple emu? Any recs. for a really protective, organic sunblock? |

lavender39 I took a quick look at the purple emu website and my first impression of the sunscreen is that it might be a good one. It has z-cote zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which are both effective UVB/UVA blockers. Maybe you could email the purple emu company to find out what percentage of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are in the product. Actually the percentages of the active ingredients should be listed on the label.
My opinion on the Keys soap sunscreen, I personally would not use it since it contains ZinClear a true nanoparticle zinc oxide. Also despite how it is marketed, I am not convinced that the ZinClear offers better UV protection than z-cote or other micronized zinc oxides.
If you haven't seen it here is a recent post on the Keys sunscreen.

I am not too particular about products being organic or not but the Dr Hauschka sunscreens get good reviews from other forum members. |

TheresaL-thanks for looking at the website. The percentages aren't listed on the package but I will email the owner and ask. She has always been helpful in the past. It is a small container but it lasts a long time, even using it twice a day. I'm glad you told me that about the Keyes product- it isn't my favorite anyway. I'm glad it was a free sample. Maybe I should just stop searching for a different sunblock and just use the purple emu. It seems to protect me, along with a hat. |

Probably a good idea. A lot of us can never find one we like and if you're just looking for other similar 'organic' ones they all seem to have the same PPD of 8 anyway (dependent on the percentages) so you probably won't get any higher protection. |
