I just came back from a job interview with the superior court. I totally bombed it. I know they would want me to give them fake answers to make me look good but I was being honest, maybe too honest. hehe Than there was a question, tell us why we should hire you. I was like uhh, umm. Hardworking, up to a challenge, team player and so forth. Than I said it's hard for me to answer this. Which it was because I know my work ethics but it was hard to talk about myself. I wanted to say, I'll give you my past work reviews and you can based it on that because that's coming from my supervisor's and not me lying. But most of the questions were so generic.
To make it worst, when I was walking down the hallway to the room. Their was this girl outside on the phone that kept giving me looks (not a friendly look, like checking me out from head to toe, had no idea why). I was busy looking for the room so I was whatever. Than I find out that girl is the one interviewing me with another lady (she was nice). I was like great. Even before the interview she probably doesn't like me based on the hallway. hehe Mostly asked if I had customer service skills and experience handling money. I'm thinking huh. Didn't know this was retail. Because I've worked for DA's office and now at probation, so I'm thinking the courts would handle more paperwork. Guess I was wrong. Than when I went to shake the girls hand, she barely shook my hand. Not professional at all. Maybe it's a good thing I didn't do good. You know how sometimes you have this feeling about someone not liking you for no reason. Back to work. |

Ooo, that sucks. I have been there before, a few times actually. As far a the girl giving you bad looks, thats her own deal and you shouldnt let it get to you. Perhaps she always looks like that! I think women are too judgemental of each other when first meeting, especially in a work atmosphere. Dont let it get you down, Im sure there is another job you would be better suited for out there, it sounds like you have great qualifications.
Aaaarrrrgggg...limp hand shakes are the worst!!!
Hope your day gets better! |

Hi Vonstella,
Thank you. I agree, I was thinking maybe she looks like that. I think she's the type that will always be competitive with girls who are a threat to her. Which is very very sad. I smiled at her during the interview but she didn't even give me any eye contact.
As I was sitting, I was thinking...I need to find a job where I can use my degree in Business and not these Admin/clerical jobs..
hehe. But I'm so horrible when it comes to interviews. Oh well. Thank you for the support! |

OK, I have 2 comments. The first is, I once knew this company in Singapore where the HR lady who did hiring absolutely would not hire anyone who was young or pretty because she felt threatened. So, maybe you are just too darn hot--- things could be worse, right?
My other comment is that when I was interviewing to go work in Japan, I totally thought I bombed the interview. I was interviewed by a big group of people, and they asked me how I would handle it if a Japanese co-worker flirted with me, made sexual comments, etc etc. I told them that I was familiar with Japanese culture and while I would never try to embarrass anyone, I would let the co-worker in question know that I would under no circumstances tolerate that kind of behavior. At that point all the people interviewing me got really quiet, and with a grave look on their faces they hastily took a bunch of notes and thanked me for coming in. I figured there wasn't a chance in h*** that I made it, but a few weeks later I was told to pack my bags because I was headed to Japan. So, never say never, even after a lousy interview!^-^
Hope this helps--- good luck either way! |

I won't put too much thought into looks someone was giving you. For all you know she could have been fighting with her SO on the phone when you walked past.
I think pointing out your past work history, and suggesting that they can contact your prevoius supervisiors was good. It shows that you are confident enough in your skills, that you know others will speak highly of your work abilities.
Don't beat yourself up over the interview. I always believe that if it was meant to happen, it will. If it doesn't, that just means that there is something better waiting for you. |

I just talked to my friend that's working at the superior court. I told her how it went with the girl and she asked me was she wearing a stripe blouse and so forth. I said yes and she said oh that's my supervisor.
Manslayerliz - Thank you for the words of encouragement. The way you handle the question was excellent, no wonder you got hired. Whereas for me, it was just horrible. Trust me. I was turning beet red. I just need to practice with interviews. I get all nervous and my mind isn't coherent.
Why are some females like that though. Like Vonstella said, some females are so quick to judge based on the first meeting and appearance. |

I think is just insecurity, we are all guilty of it, I know I am! Women size each other up, its a hard habbit to break, but dont let her bad mood/manners rub off on you.
I try to not let my first impression of someone be my only of them. Realizing that they are human and deal with the same crap as everyone else helps too.
A tip for being calmer during interviews, at least it works for me, is to think about them sitting on the potty! I swear this works, yes its gross, but it pretty much takes anyone off their highhorse. The whole picturing them in their underwear never worked for me. The only downside is trying not to laugh! |

qisme615 - So sorry for your bad experience. I have been where you are so many times that I must be an idiot. But, I've learned that when people are hiring they already have a preconceived idea of who they want and what they are looking for and no matter how right you are for the position it's basically a matter of luck - you are what they want or you are not what they want.
If you did not get that job then it wasn't meant to be. The right one is going to come along. You did a good interview. The people doing the interview did a rotten job. |

vonstella - i'll try that next time. it'll either get me thru the interview with ease or i'll have a stupid grin on my face. probably the latter will happen. hehe
leeleedeedee - your right about most interviewers already have a certain type of person in mind to hire.
daniel17654- I was hoping a fire drill or something would sound because I was turning red and feeling hot, and I just wanted to get out of there.
I think my interview was about 10 minutes max, if I was lucky. heehee |

qisme615,
I think a lot of the time an employer already has a person lined up for a position, but they have to go through with the interviewing process just to meet procedural guidelines. I've went to an interview once where I felt like they were just going through the motions and didn't really care about my answers to their questions. I left KNOWING I didn't get the job and feeling rather frustrated. And later I found out that indeed, they had already promised the position to someone but had to keep it under wraps because it was a union position and they had to follow union protocol (i.e. posting the job and interviewing a group of people before appointing a candidate). I was very angry about having my time wasted, wasting my money on a new outfit for the phony interview, and going through the emotional roller coaster of getting my hopes up for nothing!
I've also been on the other side and have KNOWN that a job where I worked had been promised to a certain person and seen interviews being conducted anyway, as if the position were open. I think it's terrible to waste a person's time with a mock interview, plus it only makes the job candidate feel needlessly "rejected".
One thing I have learned in life (as others have mentioned here) is that something better is in store for you, so hang in there! |

Ususally people who get those kind of jobs are very well connected. Maybe I should pm you. With these questions, there is an answer that they are looking for. (they have a list and if you don't match it, you don't get the job and even if you matched it, maybe someone else more connected got the job)
I'm going to pm you......you'll understand why... |

Seeking~HG,
That's just terrible for these organizations to do this. I've seen it too and it bothers me as well. What's the point of posting the supposedly open position and wasting people's time with interviews. Because these people that took their time out to go to the interview are the people that really needs a job or wants something better. With the county, they will usually say this position is only opened to people who are already in that agency and not to others. At least with that I won't have to waste my time. Sometimes I guess it's all about the people you know. |

Skincare,
So if I were to give them the answers they are looking for than I would get the green light for a 2nd interview. I just got a PM from you. |

I just finished reading the thread. If you didn't like the "look" she gave you, hate to say it, then you would not like the job. That is the way it is with government jobs. |

Also, if you are "minority" you will get the job. That is what my boss told me.....he said that they do have a quota(sp?) |

The girl had said IF they consider me than I would have to go back for a 2nd interview. There wasn't a written test but they had sent an online test where we could take it at home or wherever we had access to internet. So I guess the 2nd interview consist of retaking the computer test again because they wanted make sure that I was the one that actually took the exam. I guess people cheat and have others take it for them. I told them I actually liked the exam.
I think there are lots of asians in the superior court but I've heard of the quota they have to meet too. How funny that it's the same in Canada too. |

Yes, this is a major problem in Canada and I was very surprised that this topic kept comming back while I hosted backyard bbq. That is why I started the thread called Is Australia the new Canada? |

qisme615--aw, it's okay. think of it as an experience. and besides you never know if you'll get a job, i totally bombed an interview once (my first interview actually) and they called me back a month later because the first 2 girls they placed ahead of me backed out.
anyway, if it doesn't work out, it's invaluable experience. i guess next time, smile at everybody around the interview place, even if they're frowning? |
