I have always wanted to try MMU but didn't think I could wear it because my skin is on the dehydrated side. I've been playing with samples of BE and EM, and it seems to work as long as I moisturize well (yay!). But I haven't had the confidence to wear it outside yet.
Some questions I have: Do I apply from the inside out or the outside in? How long do I buff? How do I correct if I apply too much foundation or blush?
Would appreciate your advice and best tips about all things MMU!
Thanks!

I guess you need to play around more to see which method of application works best for you. For me, I buff inside out. I use JI's powder brush, my MMU applies evenly, so I don't need to buff that much...only several strokes will do. When you play around with different brands, you will find that the coverage varies, so the amount you use will vary as well. I used a tiny pinch with Youngblood, but now that i've switched to Lauress i use more, since the coverage is less with Lauress. HTH! |

Hi Montrealgal
I apply from the outside in towards the center of my face. You just lightly buff all over your face a couple of times. I find if you apply too much blush, your finishing powder (whether its BE or EM), really tones it down. In fact I tend to over-apply blush for that reason because if I don't I look too pale after I apply finishing powder.
I also recommend you use very little foundation powder - if its not enough you can always add another layer. EM website has application instructions http://www.everydayminerals.com/application.html and I know there's a ton of other sites out there which also give instructions.

I don't know if you saw this link. It gives a good visual.
http://community.livejournal.com/bareescentuals/21179.html?view=86203
I am currently using EDM. I don't use that much foundation as in the visual. But I do find the kabuki brush (I just bougt a really nice soft one.) helps. Also I find concealer helps but I don't use a large brush like that. Anyhow I liked the link as it shows the difference before and after of a good MMU application.
I also like to visitwww.mineralmakeupmania.com.
Be careful though; it is a "dangerous" site like this one!
I tend to start applying in the middle of my face first; nose and cheeks as that is where I need coverage (red blotchy, etc) As long as you blend well you should be ok. (The correct colour also too of course!)
I have started applying MMU on my chest area and down on my neck. I would NEVER think of doing that with a liquid!
I tend to "push" my kabuki brush into my skin as oppossed to "grinding" or "buffing". Also I really like EDM finishing powder. I use a powder brush and just lightly brush it on. |

Dollbird - it never occurred to me that different brands might give different coverage. I'm glad you mentioned that. Thanks!
Hi Anya! Thanks for the link! I don't have the BE mineral veil or finishing powder from EM. I'm working with samples until I have the art of MMU mastered! What do you think about putting the blush on before the foundation?
Autumn - I appreciate the links Just what I need - another *dangerous* site! Where did you get your new kabuki brush?
So, some people start in the middle and work out, and others work in. I guess I will have to try it both ways and check the results.
And that's 2 votes for EM's finishing powder. I see it's for normal to oily skin and I'm normal to dry/dehydrated. Do you think it would work for me? Is a finishing powder necessary?
Thanks, everyone, for your tips! I feel like I'm back in school... but this time it's fun! |

hi montrealgal ,
mineral makeup mania is a mecca of info - but be prepared for what I call "sample-itis" - this is a condition that overcomes you when you've read all of the recs + raves for the different mmu brands and you will find yourself ordering samples of all sorts of great stuff to play around with . Sampling is also a great way to try new eye/cheek/lip colors without breaking the bank or being stuck with something full sized that doesn't work for you.
Another application technique is to mix the minerals with the purest organic aloe vera gel or your favorite moisturizer and apply it to your face the same way you put on conventional liquid/creme foundation.
I personally don't buff - as my skin can't tolerate it. Buffing can cause microscopic cuts on your skin and lead to bad breakouts .
Dusting on light layers with a large fluffy powder brush helps you control coverage and get the most natural finish IMHO. I am still amazed at how concentrated mmu is but how light it feels on the skin.
Given your skin is on the drier side I would also like to recommend you trywww.barefacedminerals.com.
There are 2 formulas - Velvet Glove (lighter coverage) and Velvet Plush (fuller coverage). Both formulas contain Vitamin E(I'm not affiliated in any way - I use and love the Velvet Plush from them).

Hey, Tisa!
I already suffer from "sample-itis"! (love that!)
I am concerned about buffing too hard -- I have thin skin with quite a few broken capillaries already. Thanks for the tip about mixing with moisturizer. I may try it just to see, but I'm looking for quick and easy and I think that's with a brush. I just took a quick peek at the barefacedminerals site -- from what I can see, they only offer samples of their Velvet Matte...?
Well, I see I have my experimenting cut out for me!
Thanks, Tisa! |

Hi montrealgal - re barefacedminerals samples - she does sample sizes of all the foundations, eyeshadows, blush, finishing powders, bronzers and multipurpose powders.
As far as the Velvets go - when you choose + click on a color - you can then choose the formula and samples of both foundation and finishing powder.
Rhonda also does custom color if you can't find the perfect foundation match. You can also apply your mix using a foundation brush - in fact some people apply the dry unmixed mmu using a foundation brush as well. Let me know how the moisturizer mix works out. |

Hi, I too suffer from sample-itis; but you know it really helps you to find what works for you so that then you can order full sized products. I'm currently alternating between Monave, BfM and Cory Cosmetics for foundation. For blush, bronzer and eye shadows I use the above plus I really like MAD minerals and Pure Luxe. I'm still deciding what fs products to order on about half. HTH |

Ok - I see how to do that now

I tried to apply the mmu yesterday without buffing and it went all over the place -- including my eyes! Maybe I'll have more luck with the foundation brush (and I do have one!) Thanks for that tip, Tisa!
Yes, if I decided to try mixing it with moisturizer, I'll definitely let you know
But I think it's time to look for a mmu with more coverage. Now it's trying to figure out the right color!
Is there a site that tells you what the color equivalent is in different brands? I have samples of both EM and BE in medium beige and they seem to be close in color. I'm not 100% sure it's the right shade for me, but I think it's close -- at least for summer.
Thanks! |

Oh, no --more mmu brands! So many to choose from, so little time to research!
But I agree about samples being helpful. And I wouldn't haven learned that mmu can work for me otherwise!
Thanks, Nomoreneckpain!
P.S. - what's *fs products*? |

"Autumn - I appreciate the links Smile Just what I need - another *dangerous* site! Laughing Where did you get your new kabuki brush?"
I got my kabuki brush from SDM. It is a Red Earth. I paid $42.00 cdn. While I do like it I know that there is better deals online. I just find it hard to find speciality brushes in retail stores.
I do have a sample order of ED and I ordered a premium kabuki for $14.00. I will review it once I receive it. If it is almost as good as the Red Earth it will be a deal.
BTW FS = full size |

Where abouts do you live, Autumn? Is there a MAC near you?

Yes, please do! I have the baby kabuki from Everydayminerals. It feels soft to me but I don't have anything to compare it to and I know it's gotten mixed reviews on EDS.

Hi Autumn,
I'm wondering how you like the premium kabuki from ED...? That's the white one, yes? I decided the baby kabuki from ED is not soft enough for me...

Hi Everyone
I've finally gone out with mmu a few times I have no plans to return to either my liquid or cream foundation anytime soon!
This is what I've discovered so far that works for me:
I need to make sure my moisturizer is absorbed before applying mmu, otherwise it will cake up.
I've tryed applying without buffing, but the mmu went all over the place! Haven't tried applying with a foundation brush yet, as I read about in another thread. And applying it without buffing makes my skin look dry.
I've tried applying both from the inside out and the outside in, and from the outside in is easier for me, although both gave me the same results.
I love love love the dewy look buffing gives me! But I am concerned about broken capillaries and the microscopic tears that Tisa talked about in her post, so I've been paying more attention to the feel of the brushes I've tried using and decided they're all too rough for me. Until I find a super soft one for buffing (anyone have suggestions?), I'll keep using the baby kabuki from EDM - but I'm using the side of the brush to buff. The baby kabuki does come in handy for applying and buffing on smaller areas, like between the eyes and on the bridge of the nose
I still have a lot of experimenting to do. Want to try mixing mmu with moisturizer, want to order more samples... The more I play with MMU, the more I love it.
Thanks, everyone! Please keep posting any tips you have. Or, if you're another mmu newbie, your questions |

I also apply my mmu on my neck and decolette area. To make for a smoother transition from neck to face, I lightly mist my brush and swirl it over the applied makeup. Gives more of an "airbrushed" look. Haven't tried mixing mmu & moisturizer, I'd forgotten about trying that, but I will now.
(I use Lisha Lynn Mineral Cosmetics, a smaller line, but her mmu just seem to work for me, also she will work on whatever you want in a color to make it right for you, great customer service!)

Montrealgal I recommend you get Bare Escentuals Soft Focus Face Brush. I got one off eBay and its just soooo soft, plus its small enough to get into those facial crevices around the nose and eye area. I use it all the time and love it.

Anya, thanks for the recommendation. I couldn't find much info on that BE brush. I've been scared off ebay by all the horror stories I've heard, and there doesn't seem to be a anyplace to buy BE stuff in Montreal. I will keep an eye out for it -- I like the idea of a brush small enough to use around the nose and eye area. And soft is an absolute must!
In the meantime I had planned to buy the EM premium kabuki but apparently the company is having problems sending stuff into Canada <sigh>
Debbie, I never heard of that company. Goodness - another company to check out! Do you only mist your brush when applying to the neck area? I would love to get that airbrushed look!
If you get around to trying it with moisturizer before I do, would you let us know how you like it? I'm wondering how much to mix -- I guess it's trial and error? |

I got my ED white premium brush. It is very soft; I think it is softer than the Red Earth. However, it does shed. I washed once and it is not as bad but it is my only brush that sheds. Keep in mind that I am quite pale and these are white hairs so I can live it. But I don't think I will buy another ED brush.
The ED brush has been assigned "back up brush". I usually the Red Earth one. |

I use JI, and I recall reading somewhere that JI MMU is supposed to be applied in a light top-down motion, sort of like "smoothing the scales on a fish". Just wondering if any JI users actually do this and get good results? |

I am having more control on applying my mmu foundation using a flocked sponge. I had never heard of a "flocked" sponge until I tried JI pressed powders. I didn't like the JI mmu...turns colors on me and it was itchy...
I'm also not sneezing as much when I apply my foundation now. No swirling little particles into the air. |

Hi Anya!
Thanks for the links! Wow - I did not realize what a good price the brush was. But I ended up ordering the JI handi brush which was recommended to me on the thread where I asked about the MAC buffer brush. It's made of squirrel hair, which is supposed to be the softest of all the hairs used for make-up brushes.
But now that I'm into MMU, I decided all my brushes are too scratchy, so I may just keep adding to my brush collection!
BTW, do you know what the soft focus brush is made of, Anya? |

I've checked everywhere this brush is sold Montrealgal and I can't find anywhere that lists what its made of It sells for US$30 on QVC, so the eBay price is a bargain |
