Since I discovered the forum my skin care regime got completely changed (as well as my skin Dancing ) so I am almost (!) satisfied now. Toner - is the only step in my new skin care regime that is missing. I never really used one before.... I tried numerous times & numerous brands but it didn't do nothing for me (nothing good at least). According to Google, Toner is an especially effective part of skin care and also the least understood element of the system. After cleansing the skin, the toner offers additional deep cleansing of the pores. It serves to hydrate, revitalize, soothe and balance the pH of the skin. It literally relaxes and tones the pores preparing them to more effectively receive the benefits of the moisturizer crème.

Sounds to me like something I gotta have Laughing .
So I was wondering if you ladies do use a toner & if so what it does to your complexion & does it really make a difference.

P.S. I appologize for possible mistakes, please bare with me since English is not even a second language for me.

With my skin I have found that almost all toners just irritate my skin even more. The only toner I like & use is Dr H's Clarifying Toner...I use this after I have removed my mask, so I don't get that horrible residue feel you get with masks. But apart from that I don't use toner everyday like I used to & my skin is a lot calmer than before. I think it hust depends on your skin. Smile

I am also in the process of revising my skin care, and I have just recently started using a toner. I have always avoided them because I have sensitive skin and it has been difficult to find one that doesn't irritate, plus I am a bit of a tomboy and and extra step in my skincare seemed too much ( I am now old enough that I feel like I had better start taking care of my skin - tomboy or not!)
I have just started using PSF R and R toner, and it's really nice. Not drying, but no tacky feeling either, soothing and cooling in my hot climate, too. Is it doing anything? I don't know, but I do like the refreshing feeling I get from it. I may also give the Dr. H toner a try.

I for one cannot LIVE without using a toner. I have very sensitive skin that is prone to break outs, so having a toner to remove any potential pore-clogging residue AND restore the ph balance to my skin is a MUST! Right now I have 4 main toners that I am just loving:

Peter Thomas Roth Gentle Correction Pads:
This is a jar of pads that are soaked in toner. It contains salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and alcohol so as far as toners go, this one is pretty strong so I tend to only use it once a day. But it smells really lovely (like a peach bellini) and it really does help with blemishes and clogged pores.

Dr. Hauschka Toner: This toner is a board favorite and it is absolutely one of my favorites too now. The smell is gorgeous and it's just such an elegant product. It's very mild so it's great for sensitive skin. It comes in a spray bottle and sprays out in a very fine mist so it's also great for refreshing your make up, getting rid of some mid-day shine, etc.

Burt's Bees Rosewater and Glycerin Toner: This little gem is so afforadable (less than $10 US) but so wonderful!! It smells like a rose garden, it's very mild and gentle, it makes my face feel like a rose petal AND it treats acne. I love it!

Zenbiotic Oxytoner: This toner is lesser-known and harder to find (I think it can only be purchased at zenbiotic.com.), but it's afforadable and very high quality. It's probably the mildest of the 4 toners I use (feels as gentle as pure water) and it's soothing if my face feels irritated.

All 4 of these toners are paraben-free, which is very key for me. HTH!!

Some people really like toners but I don't find it necessary for me. Haven't used a toner for a long time, I'm guessing more than 10 years.

Have thought about trying some of the ACV/green tea recommendations I've seen here, but then I think do I really want to add yet another step to my skincare? Plus, I don't think there's room in my bathroom for any more stuff Smile

Hi shantel! Well, what I do to refresh my make up mid day is I first use a blotting paper to soak up the excess oil. Then, I gently mist with the Dr. H toner--- it doesn't disturb my make up and it eats up the last bit of oil. I let the toner dry, then I dust with Jurlique's Rose Silk Dust and voila--- good as new! HTH!

Hi There,

I've toners for years, but this last year I've really rethought that concept. My skin doesn't look any different since I stopped.

i don't that's true ahau. there's many types of toners, and from what i gathered reading here and there, toner brings the skin's pH to its natural level after cleansing.

for awhile i was skipping toner and going straight to applying serum, but a few ladies here reminded me of hard water. since i live in california, i guess hard water is what we have here, so i never skip toner anymore.

i don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but, a few mentioned using bottled water for toner. i have not tried it yet but it sounds tempting.

I remember in her book that Dr. Denese really stressed the importance of toner to balance skins ph and wipe away dirt and oil that the cleanser may have left behind. She said that everyone should use it and that it is the most neglected part of skin care routines. I don't know, but with a face like that, I'll take any advice she gives.

Weird, I was just thinking about toner today. I was in the Organic Pharmacy shop and overheard the SA telling some lady how she should use toner to 'close' her pores (as if they are doors that just open and close). I don't use a toner at the moment and wonder whether using one would help clean my pores better. I just looked this up at Beauty Bible and it said the following. Interesting as I am using Amanda Lacey cleanser at the moment.

Q: I am looking for a good rosewater toner. In the past I have used Kiehl’s rosewater products, but have found that the alcohol content resulted in dry patches on my otherwise normal skin. Any suggestions?

A: As we don’t believe in toners - they strip the skin - we prefer rosewater, but it should be gentle, and not alcoholic. Personally we are big fans of Neal’s Yard Remedies French Rose Floral Water, which is organically certified, and costs £4.35; you can buy it on-line fromwww.nealsyardremedies.com. More pricey - but it smells heavenly - is Amanda Lacey’s Persian Rosewater, which Amanda - one of our favourite facialists - uses as an integral part of her treatments. ’Rosewater is the only toner you need,’ is Amanda’s comment, and we agree. Amanda Lacey Persian Rosewater is £32.50 (mail order 020-7370 4410).

Even weirder, between going into the OP and visiting here, while getting some stuff at the supermarket, I was thinking of rosewater and looked at the Neals Yard bottle. I was surprised to see alcohol in it?
Just looked it up online and can't see a french one, just the one I saw in the shop earlier and it says on the ingredients 'Water, rose absolute, polysorbate-20, phenoxyethanol, alcohol denat.'

daisy--looks like there's some misinformation there on the site's behalf. i think some toners can be harsh and strip the skin, but i don't think all toners are of course.

besides, i think the rose water is being used as a toner it seems.

daisy - I use something called "Triple Rosewater". It smells absolutely amazing and is very gentle indeed. There's no alcohol in it - just pure rosewater.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you the brand as we're redecorating at the moment and I can't actually reach it because of wet paint! But it is sold in most health food shops. Two of local indie health food shops definitely sell it, and I think Holland & Barrett might too.

PSF's R-R toning mist really helps my skin heal faster and redness (from squeezing Shock ) die down. Don't wanna be without it!

I've used toners off and on but have just started using one again based on something I read on NCN's site about hard water residues. Toners apparently help remove them:

I think toners were originally intended to balance ph and/or remove excess surfactant. They aren't really 'necessary,' but I love them! It gives me an excuse to slather my skin with extra goodies while getting it a little cleaner at the same time. What's not to love? Very Happy

I use toner myself and I love it too.... Not only it helps regulate pH balance of the skin, but it also helps penetrate the skin-care products better....

I really love using toners, although I try to stick to natural substances (like ACV and witch hazel) because the rest irritate my skin. I saw a reduction of pimples, black heads and tighter pores.

However, recently, I have noticed that not that much comes off on the pad when I use the toner. That might be because I don't wear make-up that often anymore.

However, when talking to my dermatologist, she said that toners aren't as important as they were before since companies are trying to use more "green" ingredients and that products do not leave that heavy residue that they did before.

So I think that it really depends on the skin care regime you have and if you feel like there is a residue left on your skin or not.

I'm one of those people who loves using toners - I always use one, and I often just spritz my face with toner just to wake up my face. I love the PSF toners but also like just plain witch-hazel or rosewater+glycerin.

I think it's also partially dependent on what kind of cleanser you use - I use cleansing-milks or cleansing-creams, and also thick, heavy moisturizers and sunblocks so I feel like I need a toner after to both take off any residue and prep my face for moisturizer/sunblock - the toners help the moisturizers to spread more easily.
