Hi everyone, this is the first place I turned to with my confusion about bay. I went to a reputable aromatherapy shop today and asked for a face oil that would help with shine. I bought the oil she recommended which contains bay, juniper and myrrh. When I came home I decided to do some research on bay which is a new oil for me and now I really don't know if I should use this product. It says that bay can cause contact dermititis and is moderately toxic. It is also not recommended for sensitive skin. Does it make any difference that this is a high quality oil? Should I exchange it for the lavender oil which it says could also help balance my skin? Please let me know if you have any experience with this essential oil. |

Smoothskin, Essential oils are highly concentrated so they can all be potentially very toxic. I'm not sure if the oil you have is a synergy blend or if it is a face oil blend diluted in a carrier oil, but as a certified aromatherapist myself I would suggest against using Bay or Juniper on the face. Myrrh is good for maturing and scarred skin and is great for wound healing but should be used in small quantities on the face and always diluted in a carrier oil or in a face cream or cleanser. I would recommend getting a consultation with a certified aromatheapist who can analyze your skin and other needs and best recommend something for you. There are also lots of great books on aromatherapy that you may want to check out as well. For example, Julia Lawless has some good book publised that are easy to read and very inforamtive. If you have any general questions you can PM me and I'd be happy to help. |

Thank you so much Wildflower for your thoughtful answer and also for the offer of further help. I did look at articles and advice written by Julia Lawless and followed my gut feeling which was that this oil was not for me, so I returned it today. It is made by Micheline Arcier. I exchanged it for a rose oil, a safe bet which I know I will enjoy using without any worry and it smells like rose petals fresh with dewdrops. It might be too rich for my skin, but I discovered that they used bay in many of their blends and kind of lost trust in the range... Thank you again, I was delighted to get a reply from a qualified aromatherapist |
