My local health food store stopped stocking squalene, so I'm looking for a reputable online seller that offers squalene at a reasonable price (and ships to the US). I've found a lot of sights offering it, but most either seem shady or overpriced Thanks in advance! |

I used to see squalene (from sharks liver) in stores maybe 15 years ago, as a great face moisturizer. Now, I see squalane (from olives). Has squalene fallen from grace? Or is it animal vs plant preference? Just wondering. Squalene absorbed so quickly.
Thank you. |

Well, considering that the shark population is extremely endangered, I would say it certainly has fallen from Grace (if it ever had it).
Derived from Olives I've heard again and again that it is a better/purer product. On that page Bosoxy linked it says:
"Although squalene is typically obtained from shark liver oil, the identical chemical can be derived from olives, and you don't have to kill sharks to get it. Olive oil squalane is cheaper to produce, more stable against oxidation, of a higher food grade...PURER AND MORE COMPATIBLE WITH THE SKIN than shark-derived squalene (or for that matter, lanolin)."
Dr. Pickford also prefers the olive derived squalane. On his site he states:
"Squalane and Squalene are two very similar lipids and compose 15% of skin fats in the teenage years but decline to about 5% after age 50. This is a major factor in the skin becoming rough, dry, and vulnerable to damage.
Of the two compounds, Squalane from olive oil is more stable and preferred for skin use. When rubbed on skin, squalane acts to improve skin protection and moisturization. Squalane is absorbed deeply and quickly into the skin and does not leave an oily film. It is especially useful on dry scaly portions of the body as it helps to maintain your skin's natural moisture level and produces the appearance of softer, smoother skin."
"The richest source of this Squalane/Squalene is a breed of shark that lives in deep waters off the island of Okinawa. In 1916 a Japanese Chemist, Tsujimoto Mitsumaru, isolated and documented Squalene in the liver oil of the family of fatty shark called Squalidae. Because over fishing has endangered these sharks, Squalane from olive oil is mainly used today."
Do those of you who use it, use it in place of all other moisturizers, or do you just add it to another moisturizer? And since it comes from Olives, is there such thing as an organic source, like from organic extra virgin olive oil, or does it not apply because it's such an isolated component? I like the packaging on the BodyMoose one. |

Interesting, thank you. I guess it is info like this that had me confused, the way it is written together "squalene/squalane" as if it was the same thing.
"The richest source of this Squalane/Squalene is a breed of shark that lives in deep waters off the island of Okinawa.
Now I see that they are not at all interchangeable or from the same source. Thanks much. |

I think the names are used interchangeably because it really is the exact same chemical substance. It's only changed in the one letter spelling to distinguish the source of it, but both names refer to the same chemical from any source. I think. |

I buy my SqualAne (from olives) from a fantastic pharmacy here in Vancouver called Finlandia.
They sell all sorts of products online:
www*finlandiapharmacy*com
click shop online, and it takes you to: *canadadrugsuperstore*com
(Note: EDS doesn't let newbies post external website, hence the * above)
where you can purchase just about anything. They ship
I buy my "Mayumi Squalane Oil" from them. i'm not sure if they ship internationally, (couldn't see that on their site), but you could contact them to find out. |

I prefer the Squalane from olives, personally.
During the summer if I just need some light moisture I may opt to use just the squalane... and when I need extra I may use it with my moisture lotion.
We were having a discussion about this recently on the Ice Elements site where some women are adding the Squalane to their bath water or body wash and I tried adding it to our family liquid hand soap as my son gets dry red patches on his wrist area in the colder months from washing his hands so often.
I do like the fact that the Ice Elements Squalane comes with a nice glass dropper. If the place that you purchase from does not have a dropper, I would recommend picking one up and using it by the drop so that it goes a long way. It doesn't take too much and going overboard may make the skin look or feel a bit greasy.
Take care.

This is probably more useful for later, as they're about to shut down for the holidays but...
If you're willing to get sucked into a site, Make Me Smooth in Canada stocks squalane, under 'Nature's Face Lift'. I've never had a problem with their quality, their CS is great. Their turnaround time isn't fast, you will wait a while for an order, but it's worth the time.

You can buy a 2 oz. pump bottle of (olive-derived) squalane from daybreak lavender farm for about $20 (daybreaklavenderfarm dot com)--I don't know how this price compares to the other recommendations, but daybreak products are very high quality. The exact product name is Only Facial Satinizer. |

I went to 4 health food stores, 1 drug store and 1 dept. store today in search of squalane, without any luck. Thought I'd ask if anyone here at EDS, who resides in Toronto, knows of a store that carries it? Overall it doesn't seem to be a well-known or popular product - at least not yet
Steffers: Does your Mayumi Squalane Oil list ingredients? I went to the site you mentioned and under product info it said "Natural Skin Supplement From the Sea". Made me a bit suspect since it's also Japanese.
Daybreak Lavendar Farm looked to me the best so far and also ships to Canada, although they don't tell you how much shipping is until you place an order. I'm finding that the shipping costs for most US products are usually... too costly, ie. $20.00 for product, $20.00 for shipping.
Must keep searching... would appreciate any tips and if I come up with something I'll post.
Thanks! |

Duh... have been searching and was considering one of the Decleor cremes/balms instead of the squalane (until I found out that the Decleor creme I was eyeing has water and vegetable and sunflower oil high in list of ingred.) Just happened to pick up my bottle of PSF ALA Complex tonight, glanced at the ingred., discovered it is basically just squalane (veg.) and alpha lipoic acid. I only use the ALA after peels but now I can try it out as a moisturizer. Funny how that happens...
So maybe not as economical in the long run but here it is, sitting right in front of me and added bonus of ALA.
Another source to consider |
