I've just been trying a couple of new products that have given me great results - but one of the ingredients is worrying me.
Here's the background info...
I have impossibly frizz-prone, dry, coloured, wavy/curly/straight, unruly hair. It has a tendency to look dull, feel dry and be uncontrollable.
After hearing really good things about it, I saw the Louise Galvin haircare range and decided to try it. I avoid SLS like the plague (it dries my skin and exacerbates my eczema) and was pleased to see that it doesn't contain that - BUT alcohol is the second ingredient listed.
I've used it 3 times now, with some trepidation, and the astonishing thing is that my hair now feels incredibly soft. It looks healthier, is easier to manager - better defined curls, and I'm loving the product.
I am greatly concerned, however, that with continued use, the alcohol might do real damage to my hair.
Here is the ingredients list. Please could you let me know whether I'm right to be concerned - or is something balancing out the potentially bad effects of the alcohol. I really want to keep using it, but wanted to check with the knowledgeable people here.
The crazy thing is that very little works for my hair, and this is the best (so far) I've ever tried!
Treatment Mask:
Aqua (Water), Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Glycerin, Inulin, Brassica Campestris (Rapeseed)/Aleurites Ford Oil Copolymer, Glyceryl Stearate, Hydroxypropyltrimonium Honey, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Lipid, Ximenia Americana Seed Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Panthenol, Benzyl Alcohol, Citrus Grandis (Graefruit) Peel Oil, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil, Citrus Nobilis (Mandarin Orange) Peel Oil, Cymbopogon Martini Oil, Geranium Maculatum Oil, Tagates Minuta Flower Oil, Citrus Junos Peel Oil, Ferula Galbaniflua (Galbanum) Resin Oil, Limonene, Hydrolized Corn Protein, Hydrolized Soy Protein, Hydrolized Wheat Protein, Tocopherol, Potassium Sorbate, Quaternium 15 and Citric Acid.
Nourishing Conditioner for Dry/Damaged Hair:
Aqua, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin (Veg), Behentrimonium Chloride, Hydroxyprpyltrimonium Honey, Unum Usitassimum, Xantham Gum, Althaeaofficinalis, Prunis Amygedalus Dulcis, Inulin, Glyceryl Stearate, Simmondsia Chinensis, Foeniculum Vulgare (Fennel Seed) Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Benzyl Alcohol, Potassium Sorbate, Vitis Vinifera, Panthenol, Citrus Paradisi, Citrus Limonum, Citrus Sinensis, Cymbopogon Martini, Citrus Reticulata, Pelargonium Odoratissium, Pogostemon Cablin, Tagetes Glandulifera, Ferula Species, Jasminum Grandiflorum, Acacia Decurrens, Malpighia Punicifolia (Acerola) Fruit Extract, Tocopherol, Citric Acid, Citral, Geraniol, Linalool, Benzyl Benzoate, Citronellol, Limonene.
Thank you! |

Hope this helps you, majorb. I would not be concerned with this "alcohol".
Per wikipedia:
Cetostearyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol or cetylstearyl alcohol [1][2] is a mixture of fatty alcohols, consisting predominantly of cetyl and stearyl alcohols and is classified as a fatty alcohol. It is used as an emulsion stabilizer, opacifying agent, and foam boosting surfactant, as well as an aqueous and nonaqueous viscosity-increasing agent. It imparts an emollient feel to the skin and can be used in water-in-oil emulsions, oil-in-water emulsions, and anhydrous formulations. It is commonly used in hair conditioners and other hair products.
Chemical Abstracts Service, CAS# 8005-44-5 and is available in NF grade. Melting Point: 48°C (118.4°F) - 56°C [3]
CAS#: 67762-27-0 [4]
It is not really an "alcohol", such as rubbing alcohol, which would dry the skin, but it is an emulsifying wax, made by combining fatty alcohols from vegetable sources, such as coconut alcohol. It can also be made artificially. It is used in many cosmetics as an emollient, thickening agent, moisturizer, emulsifier, stabilizer, opacifier as well as a carrying agent for other ingredients. It is a substitute for making lotions if you don't have emulsifying wax as well. |

rileygirl - I would give you a huge big kiss and hug if you were anywhere near here right now!
Thank you so much! I should have thought about searching on the internet, but was in such a panic about the word "alcohol".
I shall carry on using it, happily. If it continues to give such good results, then I'll post a review. I know that there are other forum members who have curly/frizzy/dry hair problems, and it might just help them.
MWWWWAAAAHHHHHHH! (Great big kiss!) |

marina - Poor, poor you, if you have the same kind of hair as me! I'll be very happy to write a review if this stuff works out for me. I know how blummin' hard it is to deal with frizz and would love to help others in the same hairy boat.
As for Kevin Murphy's line - no, I haven't tried it, but have been hearing a little about it recently. Will let you know if I do get hold of some. |

Hi Riley,
DD loves it and stole it from me Plus, teens never heard 'less is more' so it's almost finished anyway. That said, I liked it but I found it coated my hair more than I liked..doesn't happen to her though. Kevin Murphy is for dry but fine hair, which is a hard combo. There are some great reviews on MUA. |

Gotcha! I have dry, fine, but thick hair. Hmm, wonder if it would coat mine too much? I'll check out the reviews. Thanks, Marina! |

I was just about to ask what kind of hair you have, pal. Sounds like mine - except I probably don't have quite so much hair as you. So if it works for you, then it's definitely worth me giving it a try.
Do you reckon the Angel Wash & Rinse is worth buying, or just the Born Again Mask?
Also, have you tried any of the styling products or the hairspray? To be honest, they all sound great!
You know, I think all of this Kevin Murphy talk might get missed, so I hope you don't mind me starting another thread about it. With any luck, others who've tried the range can let us know their experience with it. I'll definitely add mine, too, once I've gotten around to trying it.
Thanks so much, everyone, for all the input. Us frizzies need all the help we can get!
Dark Moon - We can't have you sulking over in that corner! Mwwwwaaaahhhhh! There you go, and we want to see a big smile from you now! |

Hey Majorb
I definitely think the angel wash and rinse are worth getting, I have been searching for a long time to find a set that Im really happy with. But if you already have a s&c that you love just try the mask and see how you go. Atleast you can always purchase it later down the track.
Sorry no I havent tried any of there styling products or anyother products infact... but I will.
I have answered over in the new KM thread you started also |

Thanks, pal! How strange that it's usually impossible for people with hair like us to find anything half-decent, and now we're spoilt for choice with 2 great ranges!
Thanks also for joining in with the other thread. Hopefully, we'll get to find out what will work best for us on there in the KM range.
DarkMoon - Now that's better! You have a lovely smile - you should smile more often! |
