Okay, its minus 25C right now and my skin is suffering big time! Crying or Very sad What would you recommend for these chilly Canadian winters? I'd prefer something that I can purchase in a drugstore or retail outlet that doesn't cost a small fortune. TIA!

Last winter I used Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion. It worked great. I live in Michigan so I know what you mean about really cold winters...this stuff worked so well for me that I could skip a day in between...and I shower everyday.

Aveeno is good stuff for a drugstore brand. It will work ALOT better if you exfoliate 2 or 3 times a week. If you have dry or sensitive skin, a nice gentle sugar scrub will do the trick and it's easy enough to find one, or to make one yourself ....

Gold Bond Ultimate Healing Lotion. You will be pleasantly surprised at just how well this product works. It promises 24 hour moisturization, and I know that there is clinical data (and real world data) to back up this claim. In the ingredients list you will see jojoba esters and hydrolyzed jojoba esters. It is this combination that helps create the 24 hour moisturization. They are very occlusive materials and trap moisture at the skin surface. Try it...you'll like it!

I like Avene Cold cream body lotion. Is thick enought and is smell really light ( a little powder smell) The price in CAN $ is about 30 $ so its between pharmacie and cosmetics counters prices. You will find them in drugstore in the cosmetics department.

i find that during winters, only my face and hands require extra moisturizing.
my body is usually warm and well protected from the harsh elements. so for my body, i usually just apply a cheap moisturizer (whatever is on sale) after my shower and it works well. sometimes i don't even need it.

Ditto on the exfoliation recommendation. I find that using straight oil just after bathing provides a wonderful seal of moisture. You can use any high quality oil--olive, sunflower, castor, etc. I also like to use jojoba and camellia. Just apply oil to damp skin, massage in gently and you're set!

I used Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Body Moisturizer when I used to live in Reno and it worked fine. I'm still using it all year round though I live in a very hot country now. I also have eczema and it doesn't break me out. Oh when I'm not too lazy I put on Oilatum Oil all over my body when my skin is still wet before I put on Neutrogena moisturizer.

I have a mild case of Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema) and Eucerin Calming Creme works well for me. 14oz for $10 - $12.

Below is from Eucerin website:

Eucerin Calming Creme soothes and moisturizes to help prevent the very dry skin that can lead to itching.

* Soothing oatmeal and moisturizing glycerin break the bothersome cycle of itching and scratching
* Odorless and fast-absorbing formula locks in moisture for 24 hours
* Rich yet non-greasy creme leaves skin feeling smooth and comfortable
* Ideal for the dry, itchy skin associated with atopic dermatitis or cold winter weather
* Appropriate for children as young as two years of age
* Fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, non-irritating (won't clog pores)

It's creamy and absorbs fast. Leaves no oily residue.

where in canada are you in?
wow -25... thats cold. I'm in Vancouver and last week we had our first snow storm of the year and it reached -7 and that was VERY cold. I use Olay body wash (for very dry skin)followed by Olay quench (for very dry skin) or any of the Olay moisturizing lines are good. My skin feels like butter Razz

More votes for the Eucerin Calming Creme or the Aveeno moisturizer. I would also suggest Neutrogena Oil - I like the fragrance Free one If my skin is really dry I use this with the moisturizer on top.

I second the Goldbond suggestion. It has a very light scent (sorta fresh), a wonderful texture, and sinks in beautifully. It also makes a terrific hand cream since it doesn't leave your hands all greasy after applying.

Sometimes, for extra moisture I'll slather a light body oil (like Booth's) on in the shower instead of soaping up, or apply a heavier one (like Weleda's) after I towel dry myself. Then I apply moisturizer on top of that.

I have found the most economical moisturiser is to keep a bottle of baby oil in the shower and, as soon as you turn the shower off, rub the oil over your skin before you even dry yourself. As your skin is still warm, it will penetrate very quickly. Then just pat yourself dry and you will have lovely soft skin.

The most effective imo is Avocado Oil. I have been using Earth to Body's Moisturizing Lotion (which has the BEST ingredients to hydrate) but it wasn't doing much for my scaly calves even though I've been using it nightly for a while. Then one night I decided to use some Avocado Oil - I was also suffering from a bad case of cracked skin on my elbow which was starting to hurt big time and I used it ONE NIGHT and the cracked skin is completely HEALED and the area isn't even dry anymore. My calves also felt smoother longer than with any other body lotion.

Not sure whether it's readily available in Canadian drug stores, but pure shea butter works wonders on my itchy winter skin.

For me the most effective is whipped body butter from BeachGirlBeauty.com. It has unrefined shea butter, mango butter, avacado oil, vit e, and fragrance (optional). That's it; not even any preservatives. Very Happy

Funny that you mention that, I just ordered the ETB lotion today and bought some Avocado oil, hmmmmm it seems we are on the same wavelength!
