I love gum, but I've had to stop chewing it because I find that most sugarless gums mess with my digestive system and leave me feeling less than stellar in general. This problem has only been noticable the past 3 or so years. It seems all the sugarless gums are now using new sugarfree ingredients like sorbitol. I don't want to chew sugary gum. I tried a "natural" sugarfree ginger gum from the health food store and it sort of disintigrated in my mouth. The experience was pretty nasty. Can anyone recommend a healthy sugarfree gum?

I recently asked my dentist about chewing gum (you know, to check out the "4 out of 5 dentists recommend (insert brand of gum here)") and he said he didn't recommend chewing gum AT ALL. Reason: the jaw is a joint, like the elbow, and when we chomp down (even if its not hard) it actually exerts quite a bit of pressure. He asked me to imagine how damaging over time it would be to move your elbow back and forth in time to our jaw when we are chewing gum. I got the point he was trying to make.

Still, I chew gum after meals when I can't brush, but now I toss it after the flavor is gone.

Jeannine, you could be feeling "less than stellar" because chewing gum actually stimulates your digestive system. Gum chewing leads your body to believe food is coming down the pipe. Digestive enzymes and hydrochloric acids are released into your GI system and if there's no food to digest, it eats up the lining of your gut. Gum chewing can be a contributing factor to ulcers.

Just my two cents. I used to be an avid gum chewer
